i have no desire to start a witch hunt but some of you are really, really bad at spotting ai-generated fic. and what's worst is that some of this stuff is just unreadable. 'the kind of man who...' 'he did it the way a man who...' nonsense metaphors and floral descriptions every fucking sentence. there's no pace and every single beat is given equal importance because, guess what, claude isn't a person. it can't tell what it should be emphasising. am i losing my mind here
i know i phrased this in a very blame-y way but it does take some practice and attention to recognise it especially when it's evolving so rapidly. edited ai fic, where some of these signs are paired down, is at this point probably nigh impossible to spot. what gets me is that these 'writers' are out here taking full responsibility for their 'writing' and engaging with others about 'process' etc when. their process is feeding fucking CLAUDE. it's drivel we are all now engaging with drivel
I'll admit that I have zero ability to spot AI-generated fic because, honestly, there doesn't seem to be much difference between "shitty writing" and "AI writing" so far — but it's entirely possible that some of the fics I've enjoyed recently have been chatGPTed and I don't know it. Which is depressing but there are so many ways to be a bad writer, I guess we'll add "can't think in complete sentences without Robot Dad doing your work for you" to the list.
And I agree, the notion that people in our community are just shitting lllm-generated stuff out because they want praise and attention and respect for work that isn't even theirs is fucking infuriating. But in a way it's just a democratization of the models that Thomas Kincaid or James Patterson or Taylor Sheridan have pioneered for decades, which is stealing other people's work and effort to pretend it's theirs. I find them disgusting, but in a way I get it. It's nice to get praise for not doing anything at all! We're conditioned to love that; part of what makes growing up so hard is that people stop telling us we're good boys and girls when we use the potty or unload the dishwasher or make our beds. Think of all the people falling victim to AI psychosis, who insist that their text prediction program is a real live girl who loves them. It's an issue, and not because those people are bad — it's because they're vulnerable to the same hunger we all have for someone who follows us around and tells us our wonderful. The psychosis of the rich, now available for a low monthly subscription. There is part of us that wants adulation, and will buy, lie, or cheat to get it.
But what makes me sad rather than angry is that people in this community are doing it. Fandom is a community — albeit a fractured one — of creative nerds who watched a show or read a book or saw a movie and thought holy shit who else feels like this, come find me, I'm here I'm here I'm here and made art or wrote stories or posted theories in order to share them. Very few of us do it specifically for praise (although I'll be the first to admit that HOLY SHIT do I love praise, when people tell me something I wrote meant something to them? Rub it on my goddamn gums) but rather to add to a pile of clay that we're all trying to shape into various images, contradictory and often ugly but with fucking thumbprints on it. And when someone violates that trust, when they contaminate the pile and pretend they've done nothing wrong and in fact try to stand on top proclaiming their own genius?
That honestly hurts. It hurts me, it hurts us, it hurts the person who's done it. And I don't know why anyone would consider their own need for praise more important than the community they want to be a part of.
Salomé is a 1922 silent film directed by Charles Bryant and Alla Nazimova, who also stars. It is an adaptation of the 1891 Oscar Wilde play of the same name

Time to dissociate fellas
all you new fandom members need to QUIET DOWN oh my god you're going to get us KILLED. we're happy to have you but if you keep talking about BULLSHIT like PUBLISHING fanfic for MONEY, Anne Rice is going to come back from the dead to KILL US. looking at YOU, maurauders fans, heated rivalry fans, byler fans...out here giving out interviews to news channels SHUT UP. we're going to have to start setting off firecrackers to keep the rent down.

Telling me you didn’t know I’d want to go for a walk in the woods, is like saying you didn’t know fish need water to swim.
So over all of this
Want to go to sleep and not wake up
Want to lay down in the woods and become one with the forest floor
actually im doing really well except for the fact that everything makes me sad and the things that dont make me sad make me angry. but other than that im fine
friend sent me an Instagram reel yesterday with 1000s of likes that was basically like "pride and prejudice is timeless actually because it's about an autism4autism romance 🥰" and then the creator proceeded to cite moments in the book and film where Lizzie and Darcy are "socially awkward" and....listen. I'm far from an Austen scholar, but I have taught Austen novels as an educator and this kind of psycho-pop analysis that views characters as individuals with autonomy over their actions, rather than tools in a story written at a particular time to say something about that time, pisses me off more than I can say without sounding like an asshole. I'm sorry but Darcy isn't rude and awkward and even cruel to Lizzie because he has autism, he says and does those things because he's a wealthy upper class land owning man raised to see a middle class woman from a large family with no male heirs like Elizabeth as inherently beneath him which he expresses to her multiple times because it is socially acceptable for him to do so in a society where someone like him is privileged above almost all others. He is "socially awkward" around her because of misogyny and classism (PREJUDICE) and she is "socially awkward" around him because a woman of her standing at that time simply wouldn't have had much to do with the gentry but to actually push back against the shit that Darcy says would be social suicide for her whole family so she protests the only way she can which is refusing his advances (PRIDE). not to be the "context collapse is the death of media literacy" guy. But this is the problem with the kind of head empty, let people enjoy things, if I can't relate to it what's the point type crowd. Youse think you're being so quirky justifying incoherent and anachronistic interpretations with your rampant individualism, ensuring that other people never confront anything that challenges them in these stories like patriarchal misogyny and classism. Pride and Prejudice becomes an "autism4autism romance", completely undermining the historical context of its status as one of the great social satires about the class and gender politics that Austen so expertly observed around her. This attitude is why we have nonsensical historical dramas that actively hate history like fucking edgy bdsm "Wuthering Heights", Bridgerton, The Buccaneers, and even a 2025 Frankenstein movie where the monster is just misunderstood and does no wrong uwu etc. because individual relatability and catharsis is king over anything actually saying anything about anything now. Everything is relatable and nothing is meaningful.

A big reason why I think I became a marxist is bc I read A LOT of Calvin & Hobbes and Bill Watterson really went out of his way to lay the groundwork for teaching people critical analysis. Like take this panel for example:
EVERYTHING one knows about American/Western culture, especially in the late 80's/early 90's, would lead to the logical next line being some form of "Kids These Days Are Succumbing To The Evils Of Satan" or some likewise cheap Reaction™ But then Bill pulls the rug out
He criticizes the "satanic" bands not for some lack of christian morals but because theyre a byproduct of hyperconsumptionist culture. Bill takes no issue with the subject matter bc his issue is knowing its only being done to sell rebellion as a consumer product rather than to say anything truly provocative or inspired.
"Friends outside of Minnesota please read. I'm sharing a post written by a personal friend and medical doctor: Friends outside MN, you need to know what is happening here. Everyone knows that ICE shot and killed a woman here on Wednesday. But that’s not the only thing that’s going on:
ICE agents are cruising areas with immigrant-owned businesses, and kidnapping patrons and employees alike. Yesterday they abducted two US citizen employees at a suburban Target, one who was begging them to allow him to go get his passport to show them.
ICE is going door to door in immigrant-heavy neighborhoods, asking residents where their immigrant neighbors live. Read that again. If it sounds like something out of your high school history textbook, that’s because it is.
ICE is targeting schools and school buses. They pepper sprayed teenagers and abducted two school staff members at the high school up the street from me on Wednesday. Police are literally escorting school buses to ensure children can get to school and home safely. The Minneapolis Public Schools have moved to virtual learning for the next 4 weeks because it’s unsafe for children or teachers to physically come to school.
They are targeting hospitals and clinics. Patients are scared and are cancelling their appointments or just not showing up. Kids are missing their checkups and vaccines, folks aren’t getting their cancer care, etc.
They are smashing windows in cars and homes.
ICE is increasingly picking up Native Americans—again, targeting folks based on skin color alone.
They are arresting and beating legal observers. A friend of a friend had her arm broken yesterday. Folks are showing up at local hospitals, brought in in ICE custody, with severe injuries that are absolutely inconsistent with mechanism of injury reported by ICE. (Think: patient appears to have been beaten unconscious, while ICE agent says he slipped and fell.) I can’t emphasize enough that these ICE agents do not have warrants. There are 2,000+ agents here and they are simply hunting for anyone that’s not white. It doesn’t matter if you’re a citizen or a green card holder, they will kidnap you first and ask questions later. But the community is fighting back.
Protests are happening every day.
Community groups have been leading know-your-rights sessions for months, often to packed venues.
Whistles are being distributed by the thousands, carried on keychains and worn on coat zippers, always at the ready to be blown in warning if ICE is spotted.
Drivers are following ICE vehicles, blaring their horns in warning.
Businesses are locking their doors even while open to keep employees and customers safe. As I type this, I’m standing guard at the locked door of our neighborhood burrito joint while I wait for my takeout order, so the employees can focus on their jobs. The place is packed with neighbors supporting this small business.
Anti-ICE signs are posted everywhere. The community is making it crystal clear that ICE is not welcome here.
Parents and neighbors are standing guard outside schools, organizing carpools, and escorting kids to and from school on foot.
Parents of kids in Spanish-immersion daycare (there are a LOT of these daycares here!) are keeping their kids home so the teachers don’t have to take the risk of coming to work.
Churches and community groups are holding fundraisers to buy and deliver groceries to families who don’t feel safe leaving home.
Mutual aid money is going out to folks who can’t make rent because they can’t work or because a breadwinner was abducted, or who need a warm place to stay after their home’s windows were smashed. THAT is what is happening here. This fight is ongoing and it’s horrifying to watch. But we are not backing down. To my friends in other cities and states, don’t think for a minute that this won’t happen in your town. It will. Be ready. Learn from us, as we have learned from Portland and Chicago and New York. Fight back. Don’t let us get to the last line of Martin Niemoller’s poem.” -Grant Boulanger
