according to An Immense World, apparently giant squid eyes are, like, UNREASONABLY large, even for something their size living at those depths. the next largest eyes on earth, blue whale eyes, are less than half the size, and swordfish, who live at similar depths as giant squid and have the largest eyes of any fish, have eyes that could fit inside a giant squid's pupil.

eyes hit serious diminishing returns wrt resource costs vs vision quality as they get bigger, so the question became: what the FUCK do giant (and colossal) squid need to see so badly that they couldn't see with swordfish-sized eyes that's justifying that massive energy cost? that nothing else in the deep ocean needs to see so fucking badly??

turns out the one strength eyes that big really have over much smaller eyes is: seeing large glowing objects in water deeper than 500 meters from an appreciable distance.

sperm whales are the primary predator of giant squid. sperm whales don't glow. BUT! water that deep is full of bioluminescent creatures-- these creatures light up when bumped into. something a sperm whale's size is continuously bumping into those critters, it's just surrounded by a glowing field all the time when it's swimming at those depths, visible from a distance-- if you have the right eyes-- as a massive glowing shape. so basically the only reason to have eyes the size of soccer balls is if you live in the deep ocean and your life depends on having a heads up when a hungry sperm whale lurking around

and also I gotta say, the imagery... the huge lurking threat betrayed only by the ambiguous glowing shape of its movements through the water, is really evocative, if spooky deep-sea games aren't already using that to make things extremely ominous then they should really start

Stranger Heart is the only one changed by Shifty compared to the other hearts. Their rough edges are sanded off, the dead parts revived (patd??) and more importantly instead of being many women speaking in unison there's only one who talks and the others remain silent but emote, like Shifty Herself does. Why that happens? I suppose it's because of the brevity of their experiences, which gave Shifty enough room for making alterations to Her Heart. But then it's splitting hairs over what constitutes an 'experience' enough to make it a 'perspective' because every Princess gives Shifty a perspective and some are incredibly short (DG though that one has ch 1 and Prisoner as buffer) ...that opens the posibility that the ocean of women that make Shifty, under Her surface that we seem are like Stranger but like. in a massive scale. because they are said to be mixing together

Maybe so but it's still existentially horrifying. Your individuality taken away and mixed up with so many others by something too big to comprehend, something that regards you as a 'gift' only. There's some evidence that the princesses are still 'alive' in there which is horrible to think about. And that's great, I love my eldritch horror game having horror!

Consider the following scenario in Deltarune:

You're playing a brand new chapter of Deltarune.

A knock on the door. Toriel answers. It's her son, Asriel, back from university!

Asriel greets with a "Howdy!"

Hugs and kisses. Standard-issue welcome home from Mom. Toriel even has a pie, baked in preparation.

Kris is here! They're so happy to see their brother again, or you suppose they must be. You can't exactly see them emote, or hear (read) what they say.

Conversation with Asriel continues. He's such a Golden Boy, exactly what you'd expect from his many awards, and the way everyone speaks so highly of him.

But as the cutscene progresses, you notice something. The music.

The music track playing isn't You Can Always Come Home, or a variant.

The music doesn't have the His Theme motif.

No, it's something else.

A melody you'd know anywhere. Not quite the vaguely ominous chiptune, but still glaringly recognizeable.

The music playing has the motif of Your Best Friend.
