The single most horrific thing about Obsession to me is the fact that Nikki literally couldn't do anything about it. She tried to do the right thing initially, have her friend be up front with her about his feelings, and all she could do was trust him at his word when he lied directly to her. And then he went behind her back to, albeit unknowingly, strip her of her autonomy and individuality, everything that made her her, and there was absolutely nothing she could do. She couldn't fight him off, advocate for herself, she wasn't even given the grace to understand what was happening to her or why she's being made to act like this. And when everything goes down and Nikki begs Bear to kill her, the only ask that the real Nikki had made of him since the wish began, he didn't even have the decency to respect the one single fucking thing she had ever asked of him. He has the real Nikki in front of him, speaking to him, like he had wanted the entire time, and he essentially asks "Well what about how I feel about all this? What's so bad about being with me?"

And when he refused her wants and needs once again, there was not a thing she could do.

the party scene in Obsession is objectively very tense and awkward and uncomfortable. but to me, it’s made so much more upsetting by the fact that Nikki was clearly popular and well-loved. when Bear looks at her social media towards the start of the film, we see she has 2k+ likes on a post. in general, she seems to have a very sociable personality and is fun to be around. so for her to have to experience a different version of herself completing sabotaging the connections she’s built - and embarrassing her in front of all these people - must be so harrowing. even if she did regain control of her body before things got fatal, she still wouldn’t be able to return to a normal life. at the very least, not the same life she’d had. not knowing that so many people witnessed such an unnatural outburst - unaware that it was out of her control - that almost definitely altered their perception of her, permanently

Was thinking about how fitting it is that Bear wants to be a food critic while Nikki wants to be a writer.

He wants to complain about the creations of someone else, adding nothing but despair to their lives, refusing to contribute anything helpful or new.

She wants to create something original but is stuck in an imitation of herself, forced to reenact a plot she hates.

Anyway I think more video game quests should make you uncomfortable and guilty and mislead you and corner you between a rock and a hard place and offer hollow victories. There's nothing more annoying than quest writing that scrambles to assure you that you're niceys and good and nothing you put your hand on can ever have negative consequences. "You cannot save everyone" and I cheer and whoop etc.

Forgive me for raving about disco elysium down here.

I don't think I'll ever forget how disco elysium handles weaving sidequests in relation to its narrative. Major spoilers under the cut

The player will instinctually try to figure out what happened in harrys past to help him heal or to figure it out for themselves. The game dangles harrys missing memories and a clear indication from the voices in Harrys head that opening this letter is a bad idea. But whatever happened caused him so much pain he chose to drink himself to forgetting? Well a player has to know!

Harry faints after reading her letter, so the player gets more curious. What happened?

when you call her on the phone every choice you make will fail because what benefit will come from calling an ex? It doesn't matter what you say, its over. She's gone. She doesn't want to talk to you or speak to you she's moved on she hasn't been with Harry in years. She's not been the woman who he loved. The dream at the end of the game solidifies this the only thing left are feelings of memories not there anymore. Harry won't get over it because we the player couldn't, We don't get to know what happens because Harry doesn't know.

Every side quests in Disco is contextualized as characterization for Harry. In these sidequest you are Officer Harrier Du Bois, the man who has solved 200 cases. Human can opener who gets people to talk and open up about themselves. Who pries at every secret, every mystery until he finds an answer except there aren't always clean answers. Harry doesn't get to resolve this or end up fulfilled.

There's a weird expectation of video games right now where unlike books and movies players expect the game to bend to them. (Its not that freedom of choice is bad, hell being able to create and see yourself in something is important too.) But there's a stunting in that being the expectation and I'm glad games are moving away from that, I think devs get so caught up in games being wish fulfillment that they forget video games can be narratives too.

A main part of Disco Elysium is making mistakes and failing. Failing in humiliating, sad, and pathetic ways. The worst can happen when you take a risk, Maybe it was a horrible mistake but now you can laugh it off. Life goes on. You have tomorrow a tomorrow where nothing good is guaranteed to happen, The games not over yet.

Hope is persevering in despite everything. Keep going.
