My favourite video
I met a girl when I was fresh out of high school in undergrad who frankly, annoyed me quite a bit, but I also had an inkling to continue to be compassionate to her given a few things about her life/background/family
I ran into her two years ago. Last week, her daughter turned 1. This girl, let’s called her “P”, is a really good example of why I never feel comfortable mocking trad wives
Her perfect trad husband, who was a shining young figure in the local religious community, volunteered in all sorts of groups, well loved in his workplace and everything else, beat her up at 1 month post-partum. I reached out to her after seeing her desperately asking for a stroller on a page, confused and slightly concerned knowing both of them came from wealthy backgrounds.
The reality for lots of tradwives living “perfect lives” is this: P was immediately ostracised. All the wealth of her husband and her family meant absolutely nothing if she wasn’t in favour and doing what she was told. Her child and her well-being didn’t matter. P, at 25 years old, was basically deemed an oopsie, and left on her own to figure out how to pay for herself, a baby, find housing, and every other task you can think of.
Having known many of these women (and supported many of these women), another factor most people don’t consider is this: they are intentionally raised to be helpless. When I immediately offered my support to P, she really needed it. This young woman needed to be guided through how to apply for government assistance, how to weigh up rentals and apply for them, how to apply for jobs, how to sign up for childcare. How to sign up for your own power and internet, and how to connect them.
It wasn’t that she was “stupid”, or incapable, or spoiled. While it looks like they’re being sheltered, in reality, these women are practically being held hostage. Sure, they might be allowed to learn things that are expected of them (see: basic cooking, baking, cleaning, child rearing, women’s bible studies, hosting, and so forth) but they are heavily controlled from family life into marriage life, and they are never given the opportunity or the reality of what many of us would consider basic adult tasks.
She’s doing okay now. Her daughter turned 1, is happy and healthy. They live frugally, but they have a roof over their heads and the essentials. I often babysit for her so she can attend counselling, or go to a woman’s support group. She is painfully aware that she has so much to learn about how to live as an adult.
I don’t envy tradwives, but I don’t find any joy in mocking them either. Even when they live the most picturesque lives, they’re also practically living a real life Jenga game. If (and often, when) it comes tumbling down, they’re screwed too, and they often have 0 skills to help themselves or find community (that again, isn’t carefully curated).
Puppy at heart
i feel like a lot of feminist porn apologists have in mind, like, cute sexy scenes where the closest thing to violence is somebody’s ass getting smacked and then they don’t even think about what else is out there. is 90s softcore what they’re talking about when they say that it’s not hurting anybody and you can just not watch it if you don’t like it? do they think we object to nudity?
remember that literally nightmarish anti-porn article a few months ago that had horrifying screenshots that looked like they were produced by BTK? i’m not exaggerating. it was as stomach-turning as abu ghraib.
so i wonder if pro-porn feminists would be so positive about the industry if they had to acknowledge all of it. i wonder if pro-porn feminists would be as adamant if they had to actually articulate, “‘crying brutal forced painal’ and ‘stepdad abusing tiny bound teen’ are empowering and not misogynistic at all!!” because that’s only the tip of the iceberg of why porn is bad. that’s barely even disturbing in comparison.
i wonder if you can really understand how much of porn is women being tortured and still say it’s a good thing.
Do you possibly have a link to the article? I’ve never seen it before. Very good point tho!
pretty sure its this article op was talking about
http://theviolenceofpornography.blogspot.com/2017/11/the-hatred-of-women.html?m=1
Over the last forty years, I have studied and researched sex offenders, serial rapists and sexually motivated murderers, in order to
This broke me. I just stared at my phone speechless because I had no words for this. I still don’t but I need to adress this somehow, even if it’s just for myself.
Why is this behavior allowed and encouraged? Why is this a thing? How do we live in world where this shit happens so much that it is normalized to the point you get it in a simple google search but still there are people out there who say our society sees women and men as equal? That there’s no hatred towards women? Bullshit. This is completely dehumanizing.
And to the people who dismiss it as “just porn” let me remind you that the Bible is also “just” a book and if that’s not a clear example of how media can shape our culture then I got nothing else to say to you.
Nothing I could say will be able to convey the pain I felt reading this blog. Those screenshots I couldn’t even fixate my sight at any on them, they were just brutal, why would I watch them? Why would anyone want to?
So again; ask yourself why does this happens? Why is this allowed and see where it takes you.
Like Germaine Greer said, “Women have very little idea of how much men hate them.”
Gyns, SERIOUS trigger warning on this. I know people have already said it, but I consider myself pretty desensitized (unfortunately) and i couldn’t even read through half. I thought i was going to vomit. Its a good article, but if you’re in a bad mental space, please don’t risk yourself.
if you somehow can still make excuses for porn after reading this, after seeing these screenshots especially… if you think this is all fine because “they’re consenting adults and we need to respect their autonomy!” or “it’s just kink, BDSM isn’t abuse, it’s all about consent! if it’s not your thing, don’t watch it, but don’t push your puritanical agenda on the rest of us!” and all that bullshit…
these are exactly the sorts of things I was forced to do when I was trafficked into porn as an underage teenager.
life & death sorts of things. strangling, suffocating, waterboarding, “blood play” sorts of things.
with strange men in strange locations, while nobody who might care or worry about me knew where I was or what was happening to me. in condos; in motel rooms; in abandoned buildings (“for the aesthetic”) where we were often trespassing and which sometimes turned out to be drug dens; at sex clubs/BDSM dungeons whose owners, staff, and members are those very same people preaching all over the internet that kink is all about trust, boundaries, & consent. I guess it didn’t matter with me because property doesn’t need to consent - what an absurd thought!
and as I’ve said before, a lot of those videos and images are still up on these most popular porn sites. some are even verified.
I am not an outlier. when it comes to the sex industry, this is a feature, not a bug.
if you’re still defending porn now, you should quite simply drop dead immediately.
I don’t really Go Here but u can always rely on this man to read a right wing politician’s outfit for filth
I mean. Just devastating 😭
This man has LETHAL comebacks. Idiots keep trying to get one over on him and he has never missed
Actually no I'm double reblogging this I found the one where he *calls a guy's tailor* to confirm his suit isn't actually bespoke
You cannot win in his arena. This isn't "if you come at the king you better not miss" this is "don't fight a shark in the water"
I gotta add this one
man: has anyone ever told you you’re beautiful? me: oh no sir, today is my first day out of doors and papà forbade mirrors in the house lest we fall victim to vanity
I feel like any aliens that were prey at some point in evolution would have an odd fear of humans. Mostly cause they look like predators, act a bit like predators, and ARE predators. One perfect example is when we're focused on something like a mosquito that's been bugging us for a long time and we are just done.
Alien: "What. What..?"
Human: *HUNTING down a mosquito it saw*
Alien: ".... yeah I am really uncomfortable...."
Human: *quiet footsteps, pupils dialated, intense focus,*
Alien: *WAR FLASHBACKS*
Human: "Found you." *absolutely desimates the mosquito, squashing it into a million pieces as it's guts and various body parts liquidize into blood of the bloodthirsty, now stained on the palm of the human. A living being now reduced to a useless corpse as the human wipes the remains on their pants*
Alien: "I feel like I've just gained trauma."
okay fucking fun addition to this post. Hunting instincts in humans absolutely still exist and are usually triggered either by fascination or anger. The polar opposite of flight is pursue. An anecdote for this is that the other day my sister, who is an avid "take the bug outside in a cup" rescues kittens in her free time kinda person, looked out the window and saw a chicken in the middle of our driveway. which is a very unusual occurrence despite us living in the country.
All she had to do was say the words "there's a chicken" and her as well as my own body language immediately shifted. We were out the door and in the yard already sorta hunched over and walking on the balls of our feet, fucking flanking this chicken. No words were exchanged. We just slowly circled this chicken like a couple of rabid dogs. totally single-mindedly focused on capturing the prey.
The chicken could feel it, it immediately began counter maneuvers to avoid us and it was faster. But there were two of us and we knew the land better, we knew how to herd it into a corner, carefully watching it's body language and lurching to counter it's escape attempts. And it was fucking thrilling.
Of course, when we both closed in on it and finally got our hands on the poor thing we simply took it into the back patio away from the cats and the vultures that wanted to actually finish the job. No harm came to the bird. We located its owner and returned him to his flock but still. From an outside perspective, it was a bit unnerving. And for the chicken, it was no different than being hunted. He was just lucky enough that we were predators who appreciated the companionship of pets and were more concerned with returning him to his humans than eating him.
Now imagine any fucking alien species watching a pair of humans, who literally rehabilitate animals in their free time, who are not soldiers and seem to be totally domesticated, just absolutely flip a switch and turn into pack-hunting pursuit predators? On a single word.
(felt like the bulldog from Rio's bird chasing monologue hit a little too hard after this)
I would even argue that humans need to do this, so much so that we’ve invented a million and one ways to satisfy this instinct.

I 100% feel myself slipping into “hunt mode” doing jigsaw puzzles, changed movement and all—same as when I’m out birding—and my mental health seems to get better afterwards.
"Not beating the ___ allegations" is such a 'now' turn of phrase, implying as it does a world where everyone's behavior is always on literal trial by a guilt-presuming judge and jury that consists of anyone who happens to be paying attention.

OH MY GOD.
“I was 14, I didn’t know what I was doing.”
whaT THE FUCK
This story has no goddamn brakes
(transcript because I couldn’t find one in the notes)
Stephen Colbert: A lot of writers say they were nerdy kids, unpopular, like outcasts, or that sort of thing; was that your experience growing up?
BJ Novak: I think that’s exaggerated, I think a lot of people love to say, ‘oh I was such a nerd’ or ‘I was such a rebel, I sat in the back of the bus’. Most people sat in the middle of the bus. That’s how buses work. So, you know, people say-
Colbert: So you were sitting in the middle?
Novak: Yeah, that’s where I sat! I mean, I did my homework and y'know, dreamed of being a bit of a rebel. I did a very nerdy version of rebellion, which I guess is sort of my way of balancing where I sat on the bus. When I was 14, I got it in my head that I wanted a fake ID. and I committed what- the only term for it is ‘identity theft’, to get this fake ID. So this is the kind of nerd- I’ve never told this story before, this is pretty much the nerdiest way you can be like, ‘a bad kid’. I went to the Newton library where I grew up, and I went through their polling records… buckle in.
Colbert: I think you’ve already - just that sentence has violated a federal law, but go ahead.
Novak: Yeah, there’s a handful of these, and I actually tried to google the statute of limitations on this before the show and couldn’t get the WiFi.
Colbert: Okay.
Novak: So I looked up -this is true- I looked up someone that was 21 years old, through their polling records.
Colbert: And you’re 14.
Novak: I was 14 years old, I looked up someone who was 21 who had my same first name and initial, because I thought, “if I get drunk” -I had never been drunk. I was like, “if I forget my name, I can’t get busted”. So I found someone who was “Benjamin J. [something]”. So I found this guy’s name and I thought, “if I can just forge all his documents, I can go to the DMV and say I lost my license and they’ll give me a new license with his picture”, this is my plan. So first I need to know where he’s born so I can get his birth certificate, so I call his house. I ask for him, I don’t know what i would have done, I get his brother and I say “I work with Ben, we’re doing a crossword puzzle based on his life for his birthday. Can you tell me what town he was born in?’. So he told me and I took the subway there and I got his birth certificate.
Colbert: How- You went to the- You went to like the county clerk and said-
Novak: They didn’t ask for ID, they just gave me his birth certificate. Then I opened up a mailbox in his name and wrote- I was 14, I didn’t know what i was doing- I wrote to the IRS.
Colbert: Uh-huh…
Novak: And I filled out tax forms in his name. And then I went to the DMV and said “I lost my wallet and I need to-this is all i have”. And i looked 14 years old, but I had these documents, so they sent me to the backroom with this woman who sized me up and said “I can’t give you this, you don’t even have a picture”, and then said with a wry smile on her face, “Open your wallet right now.” and like a true method actor, the only thing I had in my wallet was a library card I had signed in his name. And she approved it, and for the rest of high school I had this actual driver’s license, with my picture on it. [audience cheering] Novak: I’m glad we have some support. You have a look on your face- I don’t know if that was funny or if you just broke the law…
Colbert: It was fantastic, I just hope you have a good lawyer.
“I was 14, I didn’t know what I was doing” said of a caper pulled off with a calculated, methodical demeanor that would make Hannibal Lecter blush
Hilda by Duane Bryers
More Hilda!!
in this family we love and support Hilda.
Yes! Hilda!
What i love about this artist’s depictions of women is even the sexualized ones the woman is always genuinely happy and enjoying herself. Frolicking or making funny faces, she’s living her life and looking sexy while doing it, not sitting in a sexual pose for the audience’s view.
I always forget about Hilda and am so pleased when she randomly shows up on my dash. Always makes my day
I love Hilda so much and I want her to be happy
My favorite thing is how Hilda is always doing something and having a BLAST! She’s not posing coyly for anyone, she’s having her own adventures and it’s not about the viewer at all
Always reblog Hilda!
HILDA MY LOVE
helpful? threat?
This thing puts a massive stupid smile on my face, but I really wish they'd stuck to just one century (lifetime, even!) to make the analogy work properly.
