Ocasio-Cortez also took aim Monday at the Anti-Defamation League, which tried to defend Musk as making an “awkward gesture in a moment of enthusiasm.” The group, focused on combating antisemitism, said the gesture wasn’t a “Nazi salute, but again, we appreciate that people are on edge.”

“Just to be clear, you are defending a Heil Hitler salute that was performed and repeated for emphasis and clarity,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote Monday on X. “People can officially stop listening to you as any sort of reputable source of information now. You work for them. Thank you for making that crystal clear to all.”

Hey do y’all remember when Boeing fucking killed a guy last year. And we all said “huh I guess Boeing fucking killed a guy” and then went on with our lives. And everybody knew that Boeing had fully just fucking executed a guy and nothing came of it. Like there was no police investigation no justice no nothing. Like literally EVERYBODY knew that Boeing had full on murdered a guy to silence him and there wasn’t any consequences for them. Kinda crazy.

As has been pointed out by more legally-savvy people than me, the problem is not "oh no! The VA is running a totally fake study as a front to collect info about LGBT vets!" That's conspiracy-brained fearmongering. Slightly better is "oh no! someone is impersonating the VA to collect info about LGBT vets!" but it doesn't quite hit the root of the problem.

The problem is that even a perfectly legitimate study collects data that someone else might access. It's not enough to ask yourself, "Is this a real study, and is it being carried out for well-intentioned purposes?" You have to also ask yourself, "Do I think this organization is equipped to safeguard any info from the study for as long as Trump and his buddies are in positions to demand that info, knowing that he intends to lie, change the rules, ignore the rules, and appoint people who will help him do all of the above?"

The VA study is a potential risk because the VA is a federal institution, and as such it may be easier for other parts of the federal government to rifle through their records for anything they can use.

There's a lot of good comments and tags in the notes, but this one is very important, I feel like it deserves some emphasis.

Part of how authoritarianism works is telling you that you can't stop it. And you can't stop it by yourself. But it wants to stop the train of thought there and let you fall into despair.

You need to remember the next part: you don't have to stop it by yourself.

You're not alone. Take care of your community and let your community take care of you. Supporting each other is so vital.
