“For example, if you’re trying to convince people to boycott a segregated store, your object is to convince them that boycotting the store will have a strategic effect, not that desegregation is morally important. For whatever reason, on a cognitive level human beings have a really hard time with this. Smucker cites an example of a Lefty roleplaying session where people were tasked with selling an action to people who agreed with them on principle but didn’t see the strategic merit of the action. Surprisingly, the sellers couldn’t make the conceptual switch to sell strategic merit: instead, they doubled down on THIS ISSUE IS IMPORTANT — even though it had been stressed to them that the people they were selling to bought into the importance of the issue. People react poorly to “this is important, so do WHATEVER I SAY”; they want to be convinced that what you’re proposing will work.”

Also from above:
“Bob Wing, a grassroots organizer, explains this nicely: “If winning feels impossible, then righteousness can seem like the next best thing.” But righteousness is not conducive to getting normies to join your team if your team cannot demonstrate ability to, at least sometimes, win. Nor does righteousness help you make real inroads with regular people.”

Transphobia is about to be signed into law in the UK. We can fight this.
I am begging the UK trans community and its allies to attend the Mass Lobby at Parliament on June 25th, 11am-4pm, organised by Trans Solidarity Alliance.
Last year we broke the record for an LGBT+ mass lobby of Parliament. Will you help us break it again? Join us on 25th June 2026 to demand be
The new EHRC Code of Practice pushes trans people out of toilets, hospital wards, and community spaces. It normalises gender policing based on appearance and stereotypes. It becomes statutory guidance in the UK by the end of June.
Trans people are now legally their assigned gender at birth and must join gendered spaces accordingly, but if they are perceived as their lived gender, they can also be ejected from those spaces. The guidance says: either break the law, or don’t pass too well.
A mass lobby is where you invite your MP to discuss your concerns with you in-person. Ask your MP to:
Demand full parliamentary scrutiny, debate, and use their free vote on the EHRC Code of Practice.
Support any motions rejecting the EHRC guidance. As of June 4th, Labour MP Nadia Whittome has submitted a prayer motion - Early Day Motion 240.
Write to Bridget Phillipson, the Minister for Women and Equalities about our concerns
Your MP does not have to be an ally, they do not have to respond to your email for you to show up and greencard them (details below the cut.) What matters is that as many people as possible show up.
I cannot stress this enough: Showing up in person matters. It is much more effective than petitions, emails, and letters.
It is a horrible, stressful time, and I am so sorry if you're trans and live in the UK. But I was at last year's mass lobby and the line for greencarding alone stretched around the back gates. It was a record breaking mass lobby and made us impossible to ignore. Let's do even better this time. Details under the cut:
There’s an organization called Advance Peace in Fresno CA that combats gun violence by providing mentoring and social services to people likely to commit gun violence that has singlehandedly reduced our local violent crime rate and recently the federal funding for it has been denied for some reason and surprise surprise the violent crime rate is going back up OH WHO COULD HAVE PREDICTED THIS
The city council is considering rededicating the city’s marijuana tax funds to Advance Peace and I sure hope they do because frankly by removing funding from organizations like Advance Peace the Feds are killing people.
Fresno has a lot of gang activity and drug trafficking and a lot of poverty and the population is always growing as the rest of California becomes less affordable. The murder rate in this city has gotten to some of the lowest rates I’ve ever seen in my whole life since Advance Peace became associated with the local government a few years ago and the federal funding being taken away from it is really pissing me off.
Also, it saves the city money. Every murder prevented is a lot of resources the city doesn’t have to spend on investigations and other expenses. Even beyond the saving human life bit, this organization benefits everyone.
You know it’s crazy when something has measurable, tangible results and they still cut the funding for it.
They’re not interested in preventing crime. They never have been. If they were they’d increase the funding for Advance Peace and other local organizations like it.
the among us show might genuinely be cinema i just watched a crewmate handle an actual fucking g-string
this show is rated tv-pg yet has shown multiple shots of a character flipping us off with both hands which has led me to believe every other tv-pg director is a coward
i spent the entire show joking with my boyfriend that paramount just didn’t actually monitor the show and just released it without actually caring about its contents. what do you mean that wasn’t really a joke.

TLDR: In ten days last month, the Wikimedia Foundation fired the longtime lead developer of MediaWiki and disbanded the team whose entire job was to listen to volunteers. Most of the people they fired were union organizers. Wikipedia’s editors are now threatening to strike in solidarity. The Foundation is sitting on $296 million in reserves and a freshly profitable AI revenue stream. This is a confrontation with global implications.
It has been suggested elsewhere that if you are a Wiki Foundation donor, it would be a good idea to email and explain that this kind of behaviour will lead to you withholding future donations.
Eeeeeyup, crafting an email now.
The rule could have heavy impacts towards trans people across society.
Last week, the Trump administration quietly released a sweeping new federal rule that would use funding threats to force institutions across the country to reject transgender people. The 400-page proposed regulation would codify the administration's anti-trans executive orders into binding federal policy, imposing a blanket prohibition on federal funds going toward "gender ideology"
The proposed rule, formally titled "Regulation for Federal Financial Assistance," rewrites the government-wide framework governing all federal grants across every agency. Among its most consequential provisions, it requires that before a federal grant recipient can receive money, the award must pass a "pre-issuance review" conducted by a political appointee—not a career expert or peer reviewer—to ensure it is "consistent with applicable law, Federal agency priorities, and the national interest." The regulation explicitly instructs these appointees to screen for "denial by the recipient of the sex binary in humans or the notion that sex is a chosen or mutable characteristic." [...] An institution that acknowledges transgender people exist—through its policies, its training, its healthcare, its bathroom access, its HR procedures, its name-change processes—could be deemed to "deny the sex binary" or to “support the notion that sex is mutable” and have its federal funding blocked.
Importantly, the gender ideology prohibition has no age limitation—hospitals could be targeted not just for providing care to minors but for providing gender-affirming care to adults, because prescribing hormone therapy to a transgender patient of any age could be deemed promoting the belief that "sex is a chosen or mutable characteristic."

I must not fall victim to disgust. Disgust is the heart-killer. Disgust is the little-death that brings total apathy. I will face my disgust. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the disgust has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

Being critical of your interests is sooooo fun when you have the critic gene & then you sound kind of insane to the average tv watcher when you're like "this is my favorite show, It's Racist" & then you try to clarify what you mean & get that [Speech (legendary) - FAILURE] "the racism is really interesting though"
[Speech (legendary) - SUCCESS] I find the sociopolitical context of pulpy old sci-fi born circa the civil rights movement really fascinating to analyze especially when it was progressive for its time but still reveals the writers' unexamined biases in the subtext
Them: So you're saying its bad and I shouldn't watch it?
Me: I mean depends on your tolerance for this type of racism, but like I said it's my favourite show, it def has some great parts if you're up for it.
Them: Oh so it's not racist.
Me: It absolutely is.
Them: So you're saying racism is ok??
Me: No.

Is anyone else constantly bothered by the fact that all of a child's medical care is required to go through their parents? That they must rely on these people to decide when they do or don't need medical care?
No matter how injured. If a parent doesn't deem it necessary to see a doctor, it doesn't happen. Teachers can suggest a doctor visit, but unless it's a very acute injury (and even then), it's ultimately up to the parents.
You can be 13. Twisted, maybe broken ankle. You teacher lets you sit out in PE. She's concerned, and tells you to rest when you go home, and see a doctor. You get home, ur parents fill a bath and add some Epsom salts, and then laugh at you for using it moms old colorguard stick as a cane. Take some ibuprofen they say. It's just a little sprain, ur a kid.
You go to school the next day, go to ur office assistant time. Office calls ur mom to come get you, because you're clearly in too much pain for school. Your mom laughs when she gets you, says you just were so determined not to miss school. Scolds you for making the office ladies worry.
You never see a doctor for the injury.
Your parents come into the exam room at every visit. This does not stop with age, except for gynecologist. But your parents are on the medical release forms. They fill them out for you, with you. You do not get to take them off.
You never get to tell s doctor about the ankle. Even though it never quote healed right, and it hurts every day.
Then your 18. In college. Still on your parents insurance, and have no car. The on campus clinic only does std testing. You fall down some stairs. Same injury. You call your parents, crying from the pain. You are using a mop as a cane. They console you and say to have a bath, take some meds, and let them know how it feels in a few days. You end up borrowing your roommates rolling chair to get around for the weekend.
By Monday, you can walk again. You walk miles to class every day. You ask to see a doctor, but your parents won't drive the hour to come take you, and you don't have the insurance card. You are still at their mercy for medical care. The ankle tries to heal again. This time worse than before. The tendons click with every step.
Now you're in your twenties. Finally have your own healthcare. You see a doctor. You get to mention the ankle! They say it's been too long to really even know what was damaged. That you have arthritis now. It healed wrong but it can no longer be fixed.
I'm 32 now. My ankle tells me the weather. I wear boots to keep it stable. What could have been a funny story about a fall and a cast has become a lifetime injury. Because children do not have access to medical care without a parents approval.
since we've been talking about cops lately, always important to remember that while lying to the police is bad, telling the truth to the police isn't much better! there's no benefit in making cops witnesses in your trial, so there's no value in talking to them.
🌂 This post is mostly just an ad for the video, it's a very fun thing, very enjoyable, so I'm just gonna run you through the structure of what is said in the first half of it, so you can look forward to it
It Is Literally Impossible For Talking To The Police To Help You
Merely Saying "I Did Not Do It" Or Something Equivalent And Refusing To Answer Will Increase Your Sentence Compared To Silence
You're Not Better Than A Police Officer At Interrogations—You're Just Not
Even If You Want To Be Punished, Proper Representation Before That Point Can Be Greatly Beneficial, And Make Sure You Only Get Punished For The Parts You Feel Bad About It Rather Than Five Other Pieces Of Miscellany
Even The Truth Can Be Fatal With Mistaken Or Non-Credible Evidence, Something Proper Legal Representation Can Know About Before You Make A Statement But You Have No Idea In An Interrogation Room
The Police Might Recall Your Interrogation Wrong And Therefore Make It More Damning
🌂 And all of that is without any corruption on the part of the police either!
🌂 The second half is also fun, but in a different way. A police officer with a long career who's studying to become (and indeed, in the present day is) a defense attorney takes the podium and talks, very frankly, about how police officers approach "interviews", the tactics they use, to catch hard and light criminals alike, laid out so clear and...
🌂 Yeah.
🌂 You're not gonna stand up to that system. No siree.
🌂 Really underscores how bad an idea it is, after all the theoretical stuff, and is also a really Legitimately Interesting peek into the head of a cop.
🌂 We re-visit it most years. It's really something.
