I've been thinking about this scene in Artificial Condition where MB meets ART for the first time. ART threatens MB to make sure MB doesn't attempt to hurt it.

Then Murderbot shows it what punishment from a governor module feels like.

ART can't feel pain. It can't understand human physical pain any more than it can understand human media. Murderbot has to help it translate these things into data.

This is ART's first experience of pain. It goes silent for three whole minutes and then it immediately apologizes to MB.

Later Rapport (short story) shows us how ART is suddenly more gentle towards human trauma. This moment must have been so pivotal for it.

My favorite scenes in the LotR books are the ones where Legolas has vital information and just decides it's not important to share.

Like when Gandalf spent literal PAGES trying to figure out why the vibes were off in Moria and Legolas chimes in with just "it's a balrog :) that shit's evil :) we're so fucked :)" like what do you MEAN you knew already and just didn't tell him??

Or at the beginning of Two Towers when Aragorn thinks there's something nearby so he puts his ear to the ground to listen, and then like 10 minutes later is like "hmmm i hear horses" and Legolas is just like "mm yep. there are 105 blond bitches with spears" like you just let your friend put his face in the dirt and you can SEE them??

in positive news, I had therapy dogs visit my library today and it was the most wholesome experience. these two old folks and their beautiful dogs were surrounded by a group of teens who were obsessed with those dogs. they were hugging the dogs, giggling when the dogs licked them, and happily chatting as a group. I loved it 🥰😭

"My mum won't let me" Okay I am 30 goddamn years old and I still have this thought so let's walk through it together.

What's the worst that can happen if you do it anyway? Genuinely. The literal worst. Catastrophise about it with me for a sec.

Will your mum yell at you? You're an adult. Yelling at fellow adults is Not Okay Actually. (Yelling at kids is also not okay but let's take this one step at a time.) If your mum is yelling at you, a fellow adult, she's the one being weird and out of line. You asked your friend and they said so too (me. I'm the friend.)

Will she cut off your phone plan? That would be a problem. Can you look into whether you can afford to switch to a new plan she doesn't have access to? Most phone companies will let you port your number over pretty easily.

Will she cut you off financially? Run the numbers again. Can you afford for that to happen? If the answer is no, that's okay, I believe you and I know you're making the best decision for your own well-being that you can in the moment. If there's anything you can do to make it more affordable, I do suggest doing that, though.

Will she be physically violent, inclusive of breaking stuff that belongs to you? That’s assault. That's a crime. It's not okay for her to do that and she almost certainly knows it.

Will she stop talking to you? Honestly I gotta say at this point that's not sounding like a bad outcome. It sucks. It really really sucks and I'm sorry if that's a choice you're having to make, but take it from someone who's been there and done that: when someone who is being abusive to you (stalking is abuse! Yelling at you is abuse! Threatening to cut off your funds if you don't do what they want forever is abuse! Breaking your stuff or physically hurting you is abuse!) decides of their own volition to cut you off, it hurts for a hot minute, and then you suddenly realise that you can breathe, and it feels so. Goddamn. Amazing.

Delete the tracking application. Live where you want to live. Change your name. Join or leave the religion. Get the piercing or the tattoo or the surgery. Live your life, because it's yours and not your parents'.

One of the things that stands out to me about Mina's August 11th journal entry after reading Dracula a few times, is that it really is one of the few times someone sees a vampire draining someone and doesn't freeze or have to wait things out from a safe point.

Mina doesn't know that she's running towards a vampire, but she does know that something is standing over her vulnerable friend. She doesn't get caught in a trance, she doesn't freeze or try to scare him off from the safety and distance of the church grounds.

She sees someone or something hurting her friend and her instinctual reaction is to run towards the danger to save her. And, for now, it works.
