Huge fan of how the entire malevolent podcast fandom has decided human john has dark skin and long black hair.

If I sit here and think about, how many times John has watched Arthur die, either by his own hands and not. And the amount of times John has watched Arthur come back to life, either by his own hands and not. And how John helped make Arthur the only existing Arthur.

To have John hear from Oscar that “God put me in your path to show me. I believe you are my purpose. To help, to guide, to protect even.” “That he has given me you, as a purpose.”

It feels like John is seeing himself in Oscar, and is scared to lose his Arthur to Oscar. Also, John is literally a piece of a god, but also, on some level, with how much control John has had on Arthur’s life, could be considered a god of Arthur. And this priest has the audacity to assume he has been granted access to Arthur by God. That god has righteously blessed Arthur with Oscar as a protector. With everything going on, it just feels like a clear challenge to John, but also a call out of John’s insecure behavior. John doesn’t feel in control anymore, so why not kill this priest when he feels like a threat LOL.

I love dark skinned human John but something that I think needs more exploring is the amount of discrimination he'd recive as a person of color in 1930s America. The racism, medical mistreatment, low employment rates, Jim Crow laws, ect.

Do you think that they got hired less because people didn't want to hire a colored man? Are they paid less? Is John limited on how much detective work he can do because it's in "white only" spaces? Would John have Arthur deal with publishing his books because if he did it, the books would get heavily banned/censored?

I mean, being in a gay/queer platonic relationship was already extremely looked down on, but an interracial one? They'd have to constantly hide their relationship because of how scrutinized and criminalized it is to date another man with a different skintone.

Lynching was also still extremely common in the 1930s. Do you think that they would have to be more careful about who they piss off because John is an easy target for race based violence? After all, it doesn't take much to convince an angry crowd to kill a poc. Especially one running around, pissing people off.

Edit: my personal design for Arthur is white but these would also apply to poc Arthur designs.

Personally, I think this should actually be explored more. This is mostly the reason why I love seeing fanfics of corporeal John as a poc and being discriminated against (I have currently only seen 2 fanfics touch on this topic)

Anyway, this post isn't about fanfics. oops.

Then again, it is a fun thread to pull. As far as I know, historically, during the 1930s, the Great Depression (I believe it was from 1929 to 1929? But basically $2 back then is currently worth $39.99.) was just rolling along, which means the racism and stuff caused employment rates among dark-skinned people to reach up to a 50% unemployment rate.

I admit it's not really a "fun" topic to recover in history, and writing stuff like this can actually lead to a bit of... conflict? Arguments? I don't know the exact word for it.

I've been thinking of writing this type of fic for some time (oopsies, back to the fics), but I understand if not a lot of people want to see it since it can come off as... maybe insensitive?
