This is essentially the answer but this does make it sound like electric kettles are a new invention and haven’t been around for 50 years 😅

You’d be hard pressed to find someone using a stove top kettle over here, nowadays.

That’s funny, I read the wiki article on kettles yesterday. Apparently electric kettles aren’t as popular in the US as the voltage in their plugs isn’t as high as over here in the UK (and I’m guessing the rest of Europe)

Yeah an electric kettle would take a lot longer to heat water here. I’ve never seen them used for anything but keeping liquid warm while making, like, risotto so that you aren’t adding cold liquid and disrupting the cooking process (but you can do that on a stovetop set to low, so); it’s just faster to use a microwave to heat the water for a single serving’s worth, or use a stovetop one for larger amounts of water.

Since my microwave died and I have yet to replace it, I just use my single-serve coffee maker to heat the water for my tea. My grandmas had stovetop kettles, though.

I guess I just don’t see the use for a kettle? If you want single serving tea just microwave a mug, and if you want more than that (such as if you’re making a pitcher of iced tea or just want enough tea for a couple people) then you either microwave multiple mugs sequentially, boil the water on the stove if you’re a caveman, or just microwave one of these bad boys to make a concentrate and then dilute it into a pitcher.

Like a mug, a pot, and a large measuring cup all have so many other uses besides tea whereas a kettle… just doesn’t? I honestly can’t remember the last time I saw a kettle in someone’s house or even for sale.

In all my 26 years of life I’ve never been without an electric kettle. Everyone in my family has electric kettles. When I went off to college an electric kettle was considered an essential.

Sometimes people are even gifted fancier electric kettles at Christmas because that’s how deeply ingrained in our family culture the electric kettle is as a household essential.

(My own modest electric kettle I’ve had since I was 18.)

I am also roughly 99.9% sure that the “they take longer to heat” thing is absolutely bullshit. To heat the whole 1.7L to a roiling boil takes less than 5 minutes. Not only that but thanks to being married into a family of electricians I also have enough knowledge to know voltage does not mean a higher amount of electricity like it looks this post assumes.

Voltage = pressure. Amperage = volume. Watts = power.

Non-American sockets and plugs are no more efficient than US plugs and sockets because you can only have so much wattage on a small space before you just cause a fire.

(Also if you’ve ever tried to charge something with the wrong (higher) voltage rated charging cord and it charge slower it’s because it’s a two way street for optimization of a current on transmitting and receiving).

You can literally also use a modicum of your brain power to heat less water quicker through a basic understanding of thermodynamics and putting less fucking water in. If I needed hot water for less than a pot of tea or water that’s not as hot as the end result? Wow I could just… put less water??? I could even turn off the kettle before it finishes a cycle??! Imagine!

Also what in god’s name do you people mean you microwave single servings of water for tea? What the fuck is wrong with you? If you’re having tea you don’t just have “a cup”. You make a whole pot because who in god’s name drinks “a cup” of tea. You people disgust me.

I have spent almost 19 years in America (my while life) and I have never even seen an electric kettle. Most people I know make tea by the gallon and boil the water in a pot like you should. With that in mind, I live in the south and we drink our tea so sweet that sugar is on every grocery list because we always need more

Because in England at the moment, people are losing their mind and supermarkets have completely run out of stock of toilet roll and hand soap.

Weirdly enough today, for some reason, the entire cat food aisle had also been completely bought out????

California coast here, and it’s pretty much the same.  The grocery stores are completely cleared out of hand soap, alcohol, bleach, and disinfecting wipes.  The few shipments that are coming in are limited to 2 per customer, but the customers are already wise to it and just heading to the shops in pairs or more. 

A lot of pet food is also out.  I think people are preparing for possible quarantines.

My boss is seriously considering shutting down the boarding portion of the business, which would basically cripple us financially to the point where it really wouldn’t be financially worth it for me to go in at all.  Surprisingly, few people are canceling their boarding stays.  I even took a few reservations today.  But we are modifying the way we interact with clients: no direct contact, and they aren’t allowed inside the primary building anymore unless it’s absolutely necessary.  They have to wait in the entrance while we handle their cats.

Food for thought... if you eat meat or dairy, you are literally paying for someone to abuse and kill an animal for your 10 minute meal. It’s a hard truth to accept but it doesn’t have to be that way. There are plant based versions of any meat or dairy product you can think of available at the grocery store. You can’t humanely kill a being that doesn’t want to die. All animals want to live. All animals are capable of feeling pain, fear, love and joy. Research. Learn. Change. For the animals, the environment and your health!
