End Gerrymandering! Pass the FAIR MAPS Act!
AN OPEN LETTER to THE U.S. CONGRESS
593 so far! Help us get to 1,000 signers!
Rep. Wiley Nickel has introduced a bill, the FAIR MAPS Act, to combat partisan gerrymandering by establishing independent, non-partisan redistricting commissions in every state. I’d like you to support it.
Across the country, partisan gerrymandering has been used as a tool by politicians to manipulate electoral outcomes with almost surgical precision. This leads to hyper-partisanship, a lack of trust in government, and disenfranchised voters. In America today, politicians too often choose their voters instead of voters choosing their elected officials. It's troubling and anti-democratic.
Independent redistricting commissions, which the FAIR MAPS Act promotes, are a common-sense solution to gerrymandering that puts power in the hands of the people – where it belongs. When districts are drawn fairly, all voters – Republicans, Democrats, and independents alike – have a fair shot to make their voices heard.
For that reason, please co-sponsor and work to pass the FAIR MAPS Act. Thanks.

This is coming from a man who has been struggling with mental illness for most of his life and comes from a long line of severely mentally ill men, the problem around discussions about ‘men’s mental health’ is that everyone is dancing around the fact that a lot of mentally ill men don’t want to get better.
I don’t mean they enjoy being severely depressed and unhealthy. I mean they have zero desire to try to get better. Not just a fear of seeking treatment due to ‘stigma’, men are less likely to be compliant with medication and treatment and therapeutic methods. This is what gives rise to things like the incel movement, choosing to do anything but attempt introspection and try to improve. And so many mentally ill men develop the crab in a bucket mentality where they try to drag people down with them, where they’re hurting so they hurt others and put the burden of their mental health on them.
You hear stories of 45 year old men who blew their brains out alone in their apartment and weren’t found for four months and you think ‘oh my god, no one was there for him’ but in all likelihood that man pushed everyone out of his life long ago. They cut ties with him for their own health and wellbeing. He felt deeply unpleasant so he behaved deeply unpleasantly.
I’ve seen this spiral in the men in my family and it is part of the reason I keep trying and I refuse to give up. I try different medications. I try different therapy and thought techniques. I try to recognize when I’m in a bad headspace and choose my words more carefully. It is my responsibility. Sure, I can ask for help and love and guidance from my loved ones but it is ultimately my job to keep trying. And many mentally ill men, especially cishet men, simply will not take on that responsibility.
I’m not done with this post, actually. Men’s mental health and the ‘male loneliness epidemic’ is used as centrifuge by misogynists derailing conversations about feminism, the male suicide rate used as evidence men are ‘suffering more’ than women so women should shut up. I don’t think men are suffering more mentally. I think mentally ill women are, on average, trying harder to get better and handling their mental health in ways that do not involve crab bucket mentality or acts of violence. This is not universal. There are men who handle their mental health struggles without harming others and there are mentally ill women who are toxic in their behavior. But I think that is at the core.
Women are lonely too in today’s society. They live quiet lives, get pets, take up hobbies, are mocked for being cat ladies. Men are ‘lonely’ and produce 30 minute video rants on how women won’t fuck them while being allergic to having a deep emotional conversation with their homies.
So I've been thinking about this recently after some conversations with my husband and I think one of the big IDEAS in the way of men seeking to improve their mental health is that one of the main things you CANNOT BE as a man is BAD AT THINGS. (according to toxic masculinity)
Like everyone fears failure, but men are TERRIFIED of it. So much they cannot allow themselves to admit they CAN fail at all. If they do fail, it's outside forces because if they FAIL, then that reflects on their masculinity. A lot will simply never try anything if they aren't confident about it.
And I think this ties in because it's a cliche but the first step to getting help is admitting there's a problem. To get an appointment for mental health services you have to admit you are flawed. That there is something wrong with you. And that's simply something a lot of men CANNOT DO.
You want me to go in to a face to face appointment and admit I'm Bad at Life? Fuck you I'll....(insert unhealthy coping mechanism here.)
When your masculinity is fragile enough, you cannot admit to experiencing an emotion other than rage, and you cannot admit to any problem originating with you. So if you feel bad, it's DEFINITELY NOT your fault. It's probably women's fault.

when you see your little kitty walking toward you at a leisurely pace and say "hi baby!" bc you're excited to see her and she starts trotting a little bit faster 'cause she's excited to see you too. that's what life is all about i think
The most PATHETIC lil baby sounds...
I love when little creatures who are entirely loved and well cared for have the BIGGEST baby reactions to normal things. Like yes sweet pea, you DO have the hardest life of anyone ever, for sure, and you’re SO BRAVE about this minor inconvenience of *checks notes* having some water touch you
There is nothing sadder and more pathetic than a baby marine mammal having to get into the water. They are suffering the most out of any baby animal ever. How dare they be introduced to their natural environment.
