@lavarislightshield
everybody leaving tags on my letterboxd roundup like "they didn't do the nobody scene??" we're so fucking past that i need you to catch up. i went into the movie knowing they wouldn't do the nobody scene and frankly i had made peace with it like okay if you don't want odysseus calling himself outis because you don't feel like the joke translates well enough WHATEVER you dont need to film every line of the poem. what i was NOT prepared for is that THEY DON'T SPEAK TO POLYPHEMUS AT ALL. they don't steal a giant wheel of cheese, they don't get him drunk, odysseus doesn't taunt him after their escape, AND he doesn't cry out to poseidon or the other cyclopes on the shore. it's "revealed" that he can speak in the cave before their escape as he prays to poseidon. someone asks odysseus "should we try to reason with him?" and ODYSSEUS says "we're past that." resulting in an adaptation where odysseus does not use wit or trickery to escape polyphemus at all-- which is the case with every single obstacle he meets. this guy does not lie and he does not play tricks. his intelligence is restricted to battlefield tactics, the administration and direction of his men as units. You have to poke polyphemus so he opens his eye before you can stab it! I am very smart. the only point at which he could be described as "tricking" polyphemus is when-- because the movie is allergic to making odysseus look stupid or silly in any way-- they tie straw to their backs to be mistaken for sheep instead of riding the undersides of the sheep, and we are presented with an action sequence of trousered and armored soldiers somersaulting and army crawling under polyphemus' gently dangling hand. which i hate because it is a less clever solution that only works if polyphemus is extremely stupid (shepherd who doesn't know how many sheep he has) -- and more importantly because it removes IMO the most emotionally efficient moment in the odyssey, which is polyphemus talking to the one sheep that's walking slow because it has odysseus on its belly like "oh no are you feeling okay today? you're moving so slow, maybe you're upset because i'm in pain? you're the best sheep in the world and i love all of you my sheeps" like that scene is supposed to instantly retroactively humanize polyphemus and make you realize odysseus has been torturing a person with feelings who basically just wants to be left alone with his pet sheep and it's extremely good at that in every translation i've ever read. but not one of odysseus' enemies are allowed an inch of humanity in this entire adaptation which seems to be a veiled metaphor for the vietnam war so what can you expect. and yes because odysseus never does anything wrong or stupid or silly, OF COURSE he would never reveal his name and allow polyphemus to curse him, and his crew only "believes" that he's been cursed by poseidon thereafter, which removes the ENTIRE MAIN ANTAGONIST of the story and changes the central conflict from man vs. god to man vs. ????
in grade 12 we were reading romeo and juliet and we were at the romantic-ass balcony scene and this hot girl in the class volunteered to read juliet’s parts and i put up my hand to volunteer for another part and the teacher goes ‘oh do you want to be the nurse, amanda?’ and i was like ‘no i wanna be romeo’ and the hot girl swiveled around in her seat to give me a Look™
she and i later ended up making out at a bunch of parties in university lmfao
in retrospect this moment was absolutely pivotal to my butch awakening but it was also just a lesbian power move
I too got a girlfriend over this play. In grade 10, I was reading the balcony scene to study with two other people (one guy and one beautiful girl) and I insisted point blank I had to read as romeo, because he had the most lines and I’m a dramatic little shit.
So the other two in my group are used to my antics by now. We’re all friends, so the pair of them decide that the one guy in our group gets to be the nurse. Now, my Juliet and I have been friends for a couple months by this point, so I decide to be a little more dramatic.
We put Juliet on a spinny chair, and pump it up as tall as it goes, and my baby, closeted lesbian ass crouches on the floor, ready to be as melodramatic as possible. Like, I’m about to do a rendition that makes William himself walk into the class and tell me to take it back a notch or twelve.
And then I look up.
And holy shit.
There she is, Juliet, haloed in the worst fluorescent light known to mortals across the globe. Light just streaming down around her, that weird off-green colour that it always is. And she’s the most beautiful girl I’ve ever seen. My little gay soul is barely holding on as the words barely leave my lips, breathlessly. “But soft… what light from yonder window breaks?”
And Juliet was the sun. Romeo was not exaggerating that line at all.
Juliet and I have also been together for more than 4 years now. She’s every bit as spectacular as she was when I was a lovestruck teenage Romeo, kneeling on the yellowed linoleum floor of second block english.
My old drama teacher would love this, and tease you all mercilessly.
"I love you but you're doing wrong in a way I cannot condone" and "I hate you but you're being wronged in a way I cannot stomach" are top tier and I need more of them.
It's almost like something happened in 2020-now that is causing these problems.
ignoring everything the pandemic response specialists were saying was good for the economy tho. State governors and federal agencies with no medical experience and no economics education told us so
"no reliable data" What A Curious Coincidence. I Wonder What Might Have Been Happening In That Period To Cause Such a Thing
“spicy pillow” jokes aside, I think @flowerkrone’s tags deserve a serious reply:
#my old phone looks like this on my shelf lmao #im too scared to touch it to throw it away #idk what trash this even goes into when its at this point
The pillow-shaped object here used to be the phone’s battery. It’s not a battery anymore. Now it’s a balloon full of corrosive, pyrophoric chemicals and hydrogen gas and it’s one puncture away from burning your house down. I am 100% serious. You should be scared to touch it.
But you gotta touch it, because you gotta get it out of your house before the pressure builds up to the point where the balloon pops. This isn’t going to happen soon – there is no need to panic – but it will happen eventually.
And, indeed, it doesn’t go in the ordinary trash. You put this in the ordinary trash and you’re gonna set the garbage truck on fire. Don’t do that to the garbage collectors, their job is hard enough already.
The first thing you need to do is get a fireproof container. The most common household item that qualifies as a fireproof container is a cast-iron cookpot with a cast-iron lid – often sold as a “Dutch oven.” Any other cooking container that’s unreactive, has a very high melting point, and has a lid made of the same materials will also work: enameled or stainless steel, Pyrex with glass lid, etc.
However: Do not use a pot with a PTFE-based non-stick coating. If the battery does explode, the fire will probably be hot enough to degrade a PTFE coating, producing toxic smoke. (Not that you should breathe the smoke from the battery fire either, but PTFE breakdown products are worse.) Do not use a pot made of aluminium or copper. The fire might even get hot enough to melt those.
Whatever container you use, you might have to throw away along with the phone, so don’t use your good Dutch oven for this. Go to a thrift store and buy a cheap one.
Once you have the fireproof container:
Gently pick up the phone and put it in the fireproof container. If possible, gently tape the phone to the bottom of the container to prevent it from bouncing around. Don’t put any padding in there, that’ll just make a fire worse if it does happen. Put the lid on and tape it shut.
Put a label on the container, something like “DEFECTIVE LI-ION BATTERY – FIRE HAZARD”.
It is now reasonably safe to move the container around. However, if the battery does explode, the container is very likely to leak smoke and get hot, so keep it in a well-ventilated area and away from things that will be damaged by heat. Don’t leave it exposed to the weather, either.
You need to find either a hazardous waste disposal site, or an e-waste recycler that will accept defective Li-ion batteries. I can’t help with that because I have no idea where you live.
However, your local fire department, if you have one, will probably be happy to help. Call their non-emergency number. Nothing is on fire yet, so this isn’t an emergency, but things that can easily start a fire are still within the fire department’s responsibilities. Tell them you have a phone with a bulging lithium-ion battery, you put it in a fireproof container, and you want to know how to dispose of it safely.
If the fire department tries to tell you this isn’t dangerous or it’s okay to throw it out in the regular trash (with or without fireproof container), hang up on them and write a cranky letter to your local government representatives, then keep looking for a proper disposal site.
When you do find a a hazardous waste disposal site or an e-waste recycler, call them and make sure they will take defective Li-ion batteries, before showing up. That’s also a good time to ask if they will let you have the fireproof container back.

The final trailer.
I want to see this get an Oscar nomination and make A GAZILLION BUCKS.
Valko timelapse
Not every story is about seeing yourself in it. Sometimes it’s about learning to see other people too.
@tearyeyedcat this was beautifully written, thank you for adding it!
Another excuse for me to post Head Writer of ATLA Aaron Ehasz’s great characters board:
I’ve been thinking on it a bit further and I think that the reason that Nolan’s odyssey has the problems that it does is that it’s afraid to be seen as unserious for even one second.
Like they could’ve and in my opinion should’ve had Zendaya as Athena descend from the heavens in full battle armor but they didn’t. It would’ve been accurate to the original text.
We can’t have anything look rediculous in this movie though I guess. Can’t have a cyclops thinking that a guy is named Nobody. Can’t have a drugged up island of silly lotus eaters that Odysseus has to physically drag his men away from.
Anyways I did mostly enjoy this movie I swear but I wish they’d gotten silly with it even just once.
I'm curious, since I see this topic get brought up a lot now on my twt timeline, since we're approaching the end of july... what are the odds of infold not addressing us by the end of the month / beginning of august?
because I see valid points to consider for both cases.
why infold should make an announcement on end of july:
their revenue / numbers of downloads, probably DAU has gone down significantly due to our boycott. this, for a live service game, is not something they can just ignore for months on end. they need to fix this somehow.
I've seen the rhetoric going around that there are people (idk how many so I'm not going to throw in my guess, but there ARE people) who will completely lose their trust in infold if they don't address things / acknowledge our efforts. rightly so, honestly, I'm not blaming anyone. mental and physical health has been greatly affected by their fuck up, and frankly, I understand that some are just fed up being ignored and will just not play the game anymore. I've also seen some state that they will stay away from this game even IF valko will be released in the future. that, obviously, will not bode well for the company's longevity either, for obvious reasons, losing trust of their players (and spenders).
if they proceed as normal / release raf's myth in the midst of things, it will only add fuel to the fire and will, again, give us the impression that infold is NOT listening. which will, again, just make people lose trust in this company entirely.
iirc, ALL our goals were achieved with this boycott. we are loud, the game's app store rating is LOW, their revenue is in a freefall, valko has been trending for the entirety of the boycott, infold has lost a lot of followers on their official plattforms. we have EVEN cleared valko's name, with older articles being deleted or corrected. from what I know the current consensus on lads from cn media news is not focused on valko at ALL, his name and image has been cleared, there were no violations found within his story. now, media seems more focused on the antis, the rumors that spread like wildfire without any factchecking and that minors are playing a game made for 18+. NOTHING to do with valko. so there really isn't a reason NOT to drop him, right? hell, cn media even acknowledged that global players need to be considered, we make up 40% of the revenue, ignoring us would not only tank infold's reputation, but potentially all other live service games originating from china.
so, at the very least, imo, they need to address the elephant in the room and openly communicate what their plan is to us. I don't think many would have a problem if valko were to be delayed, IF, and that's a massive fucking IF, infold were to communicate this as such. ofc, best case scenario is that valko were to be reinstated in game by the end of july or beginning of august, and that is what I'm hoping for myself, but I could maybe wait for longer IF infold told us why they can't release him now, and if they give us a release date / month.
now, reasons I saw why infold might not address the boycott / valko entirely and will try to proceed as normal:
the biggest reason is probably that they're trying to keep a low profile, still. reinstating valko will likely cause another outcry and another wave of massive hate from antis. reminder, that antis were not shying away from stooping as low as to send cow dung and posing a physical threat to infold and their employees to the point that police had to be called, so I don't think infold would be that happy for it all to start again.
while not confirmed to be directly linked to lads and what has happened, there are investigations ongoing about cyber harrassment, water armies, coordinated hate on the internet etc in china. personally speculating, I'm going to assume that they're investigating the antis that have spread reputation-damaging rumors and bombarded infold with hate, given the time the announcement was made about the investigation. maybe infold will wait things out until these investigations are over / or at the very least start to bear fruit?
then again, if these were to be the case, I think refusing to even acknowledge us would be the stupidest fucking thing infold can do at this point, no matter the reason. they can't stay silent for almost a month and expect us to be fine without any form of "we hear you" especially not if they promised to do better with communication and listening to player feedback (although that might've just been corpo speak)
if you couldn't tell, I'll be FUMING if infold chooses to NOT give us any statement at all, and I am choosing to believe this company isn't completely dumb to ruin their reputation, revenue and future growth like that.
besides, I'm pretty sure that delaying valko is not the move infold might think it is. it might keep the antis happy for a while, but does infold really think they won't start throwing a tantrum again the moment infold decides to release valko, even at a later date? they don't want him in the game point blank period, so obviously whatever "calming down" might've happened in the span of time would just become void and they'll explode again not to mention that the momentum is NOW, and the momentum is fragile. so they will not only anger the antis again by reinstating him, but also the people who were patiently awaiting for valko's rightful return might not be around anymore.
however, IF infold really were to still ignore us... well. I'll still proceed with the boycott lmfao.
I won't be logging in, I sure as hell won't be spending a dime on the game until valko is back (maybe not ever, who knows), I will still be talking about valko in a positive light on social media and I WILL be annoying as hell and bring him up on every social media post, if they were to start posting again.
I'm interested in what you guys think.
one of these days i’m gonna snap
this is about all it/its characters now actually. respect it/its pronouns or die by my hand
yeah yeah. nothing. haha
just learned that my friend’s sister likes to learn what cologne her boyfriends’ dads wear and then buy it and layer it with her perfume when they’re having sex to create a Freudian effect. omg
