Late night thought, what do speedsters actually see when they’re running? Do they actually see the blur lines we tend to see in comics and animated shows? Or does everything move at a normal rate to them? So when you get out of it the world is like a freeze frame for a couple of seconds or running in slo-mo as their bodies adjust to the new speed? Ok bullshit crack HC as an autistic person. You cannot convince me that Bruce Wayne has not basically turned his mind off to fear/pain responses but still secretly eats like a 7 year old. When he doesn’t have to impress anyone he doesn’t even have to ask Alfred anymore for the comfort foods. He says he has a complicated Bat-diet but it’s partially made up of dino nuggets and mac and cheese. And Alfred is allowed to tease him about it and try to make him eat fancier stuff but… you gotta stick with what works after a while.

Bruce still eats them in his mid 40s. Part of this is because Dick says that he needs a little bit more whimsy in his life. And in his mind, this would be best accomplished by Bruce eating miniature pieces of chicken shaped like the T-Rex in the Batcave.

it’s called a sutrah, and it’s meant to act as a physical barrier between the person praying and someone who might happen to pass in front.

3. Vanilla. It’s always been a comforting and calming scent to me. I’ve got a vanilla scented spray to literally add the scent to other colognes I have that don’t have it

4. Dick Grayson tbh. I’ve been reading a lot of Nightwing books recently and I wish I could tackle problems the way he does.

6. Permanently moving only in the case that my actual living quarters remain the same (mobile home situation) and I’m living with someone who’s always there.

7. I was back at the acrobatics gym I used to train in as a child for some reason, and for much of it I was doing some really trippy stuff in there, felt very backrooms esque. The bit I remember waking up in the middle of was doing some stationary trapeze work (which, I was trained a little bit in when I was 18, how I miss the trapeze).

8. One of my myriad of necklaces, with an adjustable chain, that’s got a sword charm on it. I wear it all the time.

9. Contact a few friends I trust so that I can maintain sanity, and combine our resources to prepare a bunker with the basic essentials like food, water, electricity, medical supplies, etc. and stock up on weapons. Ironically the job I currently work has some historical weaponry training as part of it, so I’d like to be able to get a spear of some sort, as pikes are what I’m best with on the job. And keeping distance between you and a horde of zombies would be beneficial I think.

10. A rabbit. I’ve wanted one for years, but I’m just not home enough to properly take care of it. Rabbits are my favorite animal, so I know it’s a boring choice but an honest one.

23. Ballet, after I sustained an ankle injury. I’m starting to rehab it through other hobbies like roller skating, but I’m pivoting to more upper body focused things. I’m hoping to make my return to trapeze this summer!

And if we’re talking dream, I’d also have my own bathroom and lots of closet space. Not having to leave my room to go to the bathroom, shower, or change my clothes would be awesome.

29. I feel like since I already teased it, I’ll explain how I first started on trapeze. I was in a production of Pippin, playing the title role. Our production was able to do some of the circus acrobatics and stunts, within reason and budget. One of the things we were able to afford was a trapeze rig. And for the finale, we brought it down and I was to be swinging over a pit of fire, with the fire about 20 feet below me, and the actual ground about another 20 feet below that. With no net, of course. I did a day of stunt training without the fire, working with the crew to ensure the stunt would actually work, and was given some free time on the trapeze to try some things. It’s been about four years since I last got to fly, I’m at a different point in my life now, and I really miss it. I’m hoping to be able to return in the summer, but we’ll see how that goes.

Dick Grayson is a “thank you”-er.

Growing up in showbusiness and in a professional environment, he learned the unspoken rules of how rehearsals worked very quickly. Before breaks, it wouldn’t be uncommon for the director, or whoever happened to be running that rehearsal, to state how long a break would be after giving notes on an act or a new number being added to the circus program. Afterwards, Dick observed his parents and everyone else in the troupe responding in the same way. When he asked his mother about it, Mary told him that saying “thank you five” after the production team announced a five minute break was a polite way of telling them that you heard and understood how long the break was actually for. From that day onward, a young Dick would join the rest of the circus troupe in this little subconscious ritual.

And now, it has somehow made its way into every aspect of his life. He’s gotten so used to doing it that whenever someone mentions anything that has to do with a duration of time, you can bet they’re getting a thank you before Dick even realized he said it. Bruce will be returning to the Batcave in ten minutes? Thank you ten. Jason’s going to be arriving at his apartment in Blüdhaven in fifteen minutes? Thank you fifteen. Alfred says dinner will be done in a half hour? Thank you thirty. His theater directors were quite impressed by Dick’s professionalism but he never even batted an eyelash. Responding was truly second nature to him at this point.

Of course, he’d had to explain the thank you system to Barbara, Jason and every other Batfamily member since them. They had initially started accepting it as just a Dick-specific thing, but after Cass started doing it following a few ballet rehearsals, the eldest Wayne child started mischievously grinning like his childhood self, and the rest of the Batkids were all stood there, flabbergasted that Dick’s story about thank yous in showbusiness actually held water.

I’m starting up a new full time job tomorrow so I expect my available time to write random things to go down as a result. I do have more free time to do whatever than I did in college though so I’ve got that going for me.

All this to say the first chapter of the Gotham Knights fan comic series featuring my characters in this post, Gotham Knights: Year One will be my sanity retention project, as I’ll call it. Updates on writing and production will likely be in the works alongside lore posts and other things.

Ra’s Al Ghul is built different. I sometimes think about the logistics of living that long and what it does to the human body.

There are times I wish we knew more about the Lazarus pit and what it actually does.

So pre crisis it basically swapped your physical state entirely. So when Ra’s, a living person, stepped in there it started to slowly kill him. It was a sort of high risk high reward system I guess. And Ra’s has cracked the code to expanding his lifespan even though every time he steps into the pit he could die then and there.

And then post crisis? Giant clusterfuck. What we know for sure it does is heal physical wounds and symptoms of aging. Jason’s implied to be physically perfectly fine in Lost Days when he emerges from the pit. Broken bones healed. No more internal bleeding. No longer in a catatonic state. In canon it’s also pretty explicitly stated that all of his scars have healed over. (And that that bothers him.) There’s also the question of where the white streak comes from but I personally subscribe to the Dan Mora explanation and that the white streak was once his natural red hair that he left un-dyed during the Jaybin days. And that it just. Turned white when he came back. (It falls apart a little because Damian doesn’t have white hair even though he’s also been in there, when he was dead too, but that’s a question for another day.)

I’m getting off track though. We know that the Lazarus pit can heal injuries. We also know that it messes with a person’s mental state. The degree to which the latter is true varies pretty wildly from writer to writer and I also wish that was tacked down a little more. But anyways.

Are we to just assume that the Lazarus pit can also cure diseases? Or does it not mess with the immune system at all? This is why I say that Ra’s has the strongest immune system on the planet. Think about it for a second. We know the League was at the forefront of technological development so he definitely had access to modern medicine before the rest of the world, but even then, he probably had a few centuries under his belt before the giant medical technology boom. And immune systems are strengthened by exposure to the environment. And Ra’s has multiple lifetimes of that. So unless the Lazarus pit also strengthens his immune system (which we have no canon evidence of as of now to my knowledge), Ra’s, and the rest of the Al Ghul line, probably like. NEVER get sick. Their wounds probably never get infected either because of that strong immune system. And if they do they can fight diseases and infections way better than the average person. Ra’s’ personal hygiene is also immaculate.

Not to mention Ra’s is RIPPED. Every time he’s drawn shirtless he’s always built. Perfectly chiseled abs. I assume that’s also somewhat pit related though because Jason is now also usually drawn like that.

I know I just said I’d get off my soapbox but I’m back. Because I have more thoughts. ALL of the Batkids are musical theater fans to an extent I think. And here’s what musicals I think they like.

Dick is a jukebox and pop musical guy mainly. Think shows like Mamma Mia, Footloose, and Six. Anything with a beat he can dance, swing or flip to. Although I also think any show that incorporates circus elements into the staging is definitely a win in his book. Any combination of his two performance worlds into one show makes him feel like an excited little kid again. That said, the 2013 revival of Pippin was a win for both him and Jason. (Dick is a Magic To Do guy, Jason is a Morning Glow guy. Two sides of the same coin.) But his ultimate favorite musical? The one that breaks his genre mold the most, and yet remains his favorite? Cats. And he accepts all of the stares. He will unironically write an essay in defense of Cats. He will rant for hours about how Cats is choreographically genius. Lowkey his dream role is Mister Mistoffelees. When he found out about the circus adaptation of Cats in London, he SCREAMED. Both because where was his casting call, and bye guys, he’s headed to London asap.

Barbara is a bit more basic when it comes to her theater tastes I think. She’s not as into it as Dick is. She’s what I call a tangential theater kid, where you’re friends with enough of them that you know your musicals but you aren’t really the biggest theater person yourself. That said she loves Chicago. I don’t know why but I have this image in my head of her singing Roxie to herself when she’s alone sometimes and then realizing that Dick finally made her catch the musical theater bug. I think she’s more of a classic theater girl than a modern theater girl, of course making an exception for when Dick and the Batgirls all get together to see Six. I definitely think shows with huge technical feats get a huge boost in Babs’ book though too. If she were to get involved in theater herself I could see her doing tech crew and being at the light or sound board.

Cass is more of a ballet girlie than a theater girlie. Mainly because storytelling through movement will always be captivating to her, given her specialty in body language and the fact that she’s now dedicating herself to the craft. She leans towards dance heavy shows whenever she takes a foray into theater. Dick took her to see Cats and I think she’s the sibling he got to vibe with it the most. Specifically I think Cass liked the Victoria ballet sections with her coming of age entirely through movement. For some reason I can also see her vibing with A Chorus Line and seeing the story of all of these actors (or well- characters of actors) telling their stories. Anything that feels personal in that vein.

Jason, as previously mentioned, likes Wicked, but I feel like he’s a book adaptation guy. His favorite composer is probably Stephen Sondheim though. Found him through Sweeney Todd, but then fell in love with Into The Woods. Then proceeded to listen through his entire catalogue. And once he’d exhausted it, he moved on to Frank Wildhorn after he figured out that there was a musical adaptation of The Count of Monte Cristo. He likes weird and experimental theater for sure too. But I will shout it from the rooftops. Jason is a Great Comet fan. Of course the classic literature nerd loves the immersive theater experience based on a seventy-something page excerpt of War and Peace. That all being said, Jason was the one who was actually able to get Tim into theater.

As for Tim, Jason managed to get him to like musicals through the 2019 Frankenstein musical. And Wicked. But now Tim is the biggest Frank Wildhorn fan in the family. To the point that if you tell him your favorite Wildhorn show is Jekyll and Hyde or Bonnie and Clyde, he’d probably call you basic for a second but then admit he enjoys those too. He loves the Dracula concept album to DEATH. He also loves Scarlet Pimpernel and no one can change my mind on this. He also convinced Bruce that Wildhorn is cool by showing him Wonderland. He holds onto shows that had a short run or never made it to Broadway like precious jewels. Amongst these? Ride the Cyclone. He guards that show’s music like it’s sacred. As if Jason somehow doesn’t know about the musical about six dead teenagers. But let Timmy pretend.

Steph is also a tangential theater kid. I also feel like she’s a pop/pop adjacent musical girlie for the same reasons Dick is. Although I’m not as sure she’s on the jukebox musical train like he is. Unless it’s a bio musical. The two choices that come to my mind immediately are Six and Legally Blonde. As much as she says she isn’t really a theater kid you can’t convince me she doesn’t know all the words to Don’t Lose Ur Head and What You Want. And Omigod You Guys of course. Also Bring it On or Mean Girls. I think she’d know the words to One Perfect Moment and I’d Rather Be Me for sure.

Damian is a baby theater kid. He’s still in his gateway musical phase, and I think his gateway was Be More Chill. Of course he’s getting into it after the fandom’s down from their height so he’s getting to see all of the content retroactively. I think he’s also well aware of musicals that were popular around the same time. Although I do think it’ll be a eureka moment for him when he discovers 13. Dick also tried Cats on him and I’m not sure he knows how to feel about it yet. Although he did have a more positive reception to Tim’s recommendation, Death Note. Damian is still reluctant to say it out loud but Tim did manage to convince him that Frank Wildhorn is, in fact, cool. I could also see him checking out the anime stage adaptations that are popular in Japan, with the Death Note concept album being his gateway into that.

Duke is just now getting his foot in the door. He’s taking recommendations from everybody. His theater playlist is very eclectic. But I think his show right now is Newsies. Perfect timing too because it seems to be having a huge boom in schools right now. But I just feel like songs like Seize the Day and The World Will Know would really resonate with him. I could also see him getting into theater through the Disney shows (admittedly like I did when I was little.) Also yes he’s an Epic The Musical fan. I feel it in my soul.

Okay now I’m getting off the soapbox. They are ALL theater kids.

I don’t know if this’ll make sense to literally anyone else but why do I feel like Jason Todd would be all in on the concept of Wicked.

I think this goes hand in hand with the “Jason Todd is a theater kid” headcanon which I adore. I know pre crisis he asked Bruce to join the theater club and was told no. But I love the idea of one of Jason’s first favorite musicals being Wicked. And then him listening to it again after he comes back and going “…oh shit.”

He definitely got into listening to musicals from Dick who canonically was a theater kid. But Jason’s taste is less Mamma Mia and more Sweeney Todd I think. He probably loves Into The Woods too but that’s a whole other ramble waiting to happen.

When Jason came back and got his music player back he was surprised by how much his taste had changed. But he somehow stumbled upon the Wicked soundtrack again, and it struck him. Nowadays if he has his headphones in it’s a non zero chance he’s listening to No Good Deed. Number one Elphaba Thropp stan in Gotham.

He will never admit it but he got Tim into the show too.

I also have a hunch he read the book. Not sure atm which version of the story he’d like better but I lean towards the show for the nostalgia factor. And some of the… strange plot choices in the book.

I can’t help but think that since Bruce’s first baby was a theater kid that he started doing Broadway trips with the kids periodically and the first time that Jason agreed to go post Under the Hood was a Wicked trip. (Also let’s be real, Wayne Entertainment exists, it’s likely that Bruce has a hand in the DCU version of Broadway anyways. Probably a Wayne family sponsorship thing.)

Anyways I’ll get off my soapbox now, and if you haven’t seen the Wicked movies still I promise they’re good. Go watch em.
