Rapists, and killers, too? Really? (Those on death-row?) The drug/prostitution problems are just a portion of USA criminals.
yes, all criminals. the moment you say “except X criminal” is the moment that people will try to convict their opponents as having committed X crime.
it’s the same thing as what’s going on right now with people equating drag to some sort of child exploitation. “but the children!!” they wail, and people listen because oh, if drag is harming children, then drag MUST be BAD, so we HAVE TO BAN DRAG.
do you understand what i’m saying? you can’t take away the rights of any category of criminal, because suddenly that category will be overflowing with people who totally 100% definitely committed that horrible crime.
Just to look at this from one step further back, let's accept the premise. Let's imagine that there is a type of crime that is 1) horrible evil irredeemable universally-agreed-upon bad, and 2) could somehow be prosecuted with 100% accuracy and 0% bias. Yes, even then, those criminals deserve a right to vote.
Do you they're going to like vote themselves out of jail? Vote to make murder legal? What exactly are you afraid of.
Realistically they'll just... vote just like anyone else. They'll help elect city councilmembers they think will better their hometowns, and presidents they think will best serve the country. They might even vote in their own interests! To reform prisons, fund rehabilitation programs, and outlaw predatory practices by telecoms. Are you saying you don't want any of those things?
And even if there were one of those super-duper-unambiguously-evil totally misanthropic death-row convicts, who's scheduled to be execute the very next day and just wants to sow chaos and watch the outside world burn however they can... what's the worst they could do, vote republican?
Taking people's rights away isn't bad because it might happen to someone you like, it's because taking people's rights away is bad.
do people think that convicted serial killers are going to vote to legalize serial killing
I've reached the point where cynicism is a major turn-off for me. You're not smarter than idealists, and you're not helping.
Funny that the stereotypical cynic is an idealist who aged out of it. In my experience, the reverse is true. I was an extreme cynic as a teenager and then I noticed how profoundly limiting it was, and also that "cynics are cool and smart" was a message that was being constantly reinforced by corporate media for some reason.
#yes! cynicism reads as very juvenile to me#and yes prev often stemming from teen pain
Yeah, like I see black-pilled people on here and my default reaction isn't "oh, these must be world-weary old warriors who've lost their faith in humanity", it's "these people are in their 20s and need a hobby"
I also think that the present era has proven that authoritarian leaders don't actually want a population of wide-eyed idealists, they want a population of jaded assholes who are convinced that everyone is lying, any resistance is either a scam or doomed to failure, and nothing can ever get better.
Hope is punk. Despair is corporate.
idk why people are still trying to do "hear me out"s on tumblr
you could talk about wanting to fuck the space needle on here and people would still call you a poser for insisting on fucking "conventionally attractive architecture" as if that's a coherent, easily-recognizable category
I want to fuck Antoni Gaudi's unbuilt Hotel Attraction skyscraper design
"hear me out" and it's a picture of the most fuckable building you've ever seen. c'mon now.
For as much as they tell you about Stop Drop and Roll as a kid, I really expected to be on fire more times in my life.
All jokes aside, the real reason kids get drilled on ‘stop drop and roll’ so aggressively is because it needs to be a reflex. Sure, getting set on fire is unlikely, but if DOES happen, you will be terrified and in a lot of pain, and you’ll need to handle it FAST. The default response your brain will have to that is the standard monkey brain instinctive reaction to being terrified and in pain - get the fuck away from the danger. Which is the worst possible response to being on fire, because panicking and trying to run will just fan the flames and make it much worse. But if you’ve had ‘stop drop and roll’ beaten into your head a thousand times all your life, there’s a good chance that in that initial moment of ‘oh fuck I’m on fire’, instead of panicking, your brain will jump straight to the trained response of ‘hit the ground and smother the flames’.
And the fact that it’s NOT a common threat is why we need to drill it so hard in the first place - instictive reactions to pain/danger are usually the correct response! It’s survival instincts! Like, if you get a bad cut, your first reaction will be to slap a hand on it and keeo it there, because ‘apply pressure to bleeding wound’ is the correct response! But being set on fire just doesn’t happen enough to be a serious concern as a species, so the instinctive reaction to that happening will actually cause horrific burns and/or death, because we don’t really need a naturally programmed in response for such a rare problem.
But it does still happen sometimes, and the correct reaction is very simple, so basically programming kids to stop drop and roll if on fire is easy, harmless, and probably saves a fair amount of lives.
When you think about it
The jingly celebration outfit that Rocky wore was probably Extremely Slutty by Eridian culture (going by what I know of them from the book I’ve yet to read)
I for one, fully subscribe to the idea that Rocky went a bit crazy in his decades of solitude and became a nudist as a result. He fully set himself free from the buttoned up collar modesty of Eridian society, eating included.
Because Eridians all normally wearing clothing makes total sense for echolocation rock folk. The texture and shape of the fabric ‘blurs’ the 3d image others hear. Even more so if the fabric is thick and sound absorbing. So him wearing a sweater in the books makes sense.
Now, for a eridian to dress up and want be the center of attention, they would want to wear something that is literally loud. Crinkly fabrics, lots of jewelry. A chain mail dress to them would be a sequin dress to us. But to wear such outfits ‘respectably’ is wear them while still wearing underwear. Be cause if you let the decoration bounce against your core, the metal colliding with the stone body will echo and show everyone your hole by sound alone.
And to wear Only the loudest jewelry ever while totally naked?? That’s down right public indecency. The kinda stunt pulled by streakers running across a public sports field for the attention.
The truth comes out about this aspect of Eridian culture over half way to Erid. When it fully hits Rocky that he’s going home and gonna be surrounded by Eridians again. So he should probably start wearing cloths again.
Rocky does not say anything to Grace about it at first, just starts slowly wearing more and more cloths again. Until the day that Grace asks Rocky if he made himself these little outfits to emulate human culture. Something Grace thinks is a really sweet gesture of friendship between species.
“Rocky ask Grace hold onto feelings of friendship when Grace hears what Rocky must confess…”
tumblr users are living in a world wholly their own which I can not help but envy
XKCD for that
I just know the arts game on Erid goes crazy. Especially fiber arts like lace-making—I like to imagine that they have huge, complex pieces that incorporate xenonite and precious stones. They convey stories, culture, and memories.
Bobbin lace is probably the most common. You're most likely to have a shirt with those decals on it or use it for decoration. Having that many limbs makes it easy to sit down and make a design; it's a common gift for parents to give to their grown children expecting pebbles.
Needle lace however is a lot more complex. Huge, intricate pieces that take years to make even with 5 arms and a crystalline brain. A finished lace tapestry can take years with several Eridian lace-makers who dedicate their lives to the craft. Thrums are often used to get the product done faster, with 5 Eridians on each end working outward and communicating in sync. It's a beautiful process to watch. A traditional technique is to start at a single point and work outwards with no plan, making a complex and unique piece. These are rare and usually owned by Eridians with high-ranking jobs.
At the memorial for Blip-A's crew is a massive tapestry meticulously created over the course of a decade. Small pieces of the families' carapaces have been woven in alongside an intricate, sectioned pattern. The piece can be read like a book—the lace echos back the frequencies of the crew's voices, immortalizing them in Eridian history forever.
In Rocky and Adrian's home is a tapestry from the ceremony of the night they mated, a common tradition for Eridian couples. Over the course of the event, the Eridians in attendance work off the hexagon representing the couple's courtship. No one involved is usually a master craftsman, so the work is a little all over the place. It functions as a quest-book, echoing the memory off the walls of their home.
It's an art that can never be lost—it's so ingrained in their culture. Lacework is everywhere you look on Erid and one of the most common arts for sale (next to glasswork, something just as complex). But then Grace shows up and tells them that their work is beautiful and while he can't read it like the other Eridian's can, he's able to see the colors. He's frequently "borrowed" from the bio-dome to consult on projects after that.
I'm coming to realize how vital it is to keep a running list of shit you did in the past few weeks so that you can participate in small talk. It's literally not anything to do with them being interesting at all it's just having Something to say to give people even the barest thing to hold on to. It's so you don't get into the "what have you been up to" "nothing much what about you" "yeah same" trap. Literally just say something.
What have you been up to? Um well it's getting warmer so I've been having to brush my cat every day.
Like no it's not that interesting of a thing to say. But now they can respond to it. They could say, man yeah it really is heating up, I've been trying to think of things to do inside more often. Or, oh you have a cat? What's their name?
Like. It's Something. All you need is Something. And if you're like me and your brain immediately goes blank upon entering small talk then keeping a list will help you remember things to say.
Digital circus' biggest problem is that it was written to be a niche show aimed at weird analytical queers with actual media literacy and it accidentally blew tf up and hit the mainstream and a bunch of people who have never had a second thought about anything got into it
This show isn't for people who watch marvel movies it's for the people doing 3 hour video essays about Utena or some shit

Also, was I the only one that noticed that the first questions at the start of the game was the same number as speak with dead?
And there was that one character that mentions those that can see strings might remember the questions asked while dead?
Makes me wonder who it was that was using speak with dead on Ragn. Or rather, what it was.
