I had been raised in such an achievement-oriented environment, so inundated with the myth of Talent, that I thought it was only worth doing things if you could “Win” at them.

If all you knew growing up was passive aggression, you can learn instead to ask genuine questions or actually discuss problems with your friends when there's conflict.

If those around you only responded to being stressed or overstimulated with yelling, you can learn instead to manage your emotions when your dog is being incredibly frustrating.

If you were put down or derided for having needs, you can learn instead to acknowledge and respect and care for those parts of yourself instead.

Everyone associates "the cycle ends with me" with parenting and while that is certainly true and still extremely important, you can end those cycles in all your relationships - whether with others or with yourself.

listen to me, this is so so important: you've gotta get used to really giving it your 60% as a default. like don't half-ass it necessarily but try not to go over 70% or so of an ass. you'll feel better and live a happier more fulfilled life, and on the rare occasions where you do need to lock the fuck in you'll be able to pull off bullshit that the sad miserable wretches giving it their 100% can never dream off, because they're busy draining themselves dry and you have energy reserves to spare.

Not every scene deserves the same amount of page time. Sometimes you need to summarize three weeks in a sentence. Sometimes five minutes takes three chapters. Pacing is about emphasis. Slow down when emotions are high, when decisions matter, when everything could fall apart. Speed up through the boring necessary stuff. Your reader doesn't need to experience every meal and every conversation, just the ones that change something.

What lessons have you absorbed from the culture about yourself as a sexual being? How much do you have to trust someone before being comfortable with intimacy? What fears and insecurities come to the fore for you when you take your clothes off? It's so good.
