it's weird how whenever a neighbor's smoke alarm goes off it's because they're a talentless hack who can't cook, but when mine goes off it's because my culinary craft is being hamstrung by a draconian smoke detector that is far too sensitive for its own good
When people argue that food from Chinese and Mexican restaurants in the US are not 'real' representations of that culture's cuisine ignore the historical reality that these dishes were developed by diasporic communities striving to recreate the flavors of home with available resources. Such criticism frames adaptation as a loss of authenticity, rather than recognizing it as a sincere and evolving expression of culture by people separated from their homeland.

While my undergrad is roughly academically equal in rank to Michigan State University, it is true that I did not attend MSU and I know little of its customs. I didn't actually mean to present myself as an alum when I bought a damn sweater at a thrift store; I just liked the logo and I knew my beloved, the Hodag, an alumnus of the MSU J-school, would be amused.
But it's such a comfortable sweater and I look fucking great in it, and I can tell Hodag likes to see me in their school colors. So I have this sweater with an MSU logo and a SUPER COOL zipper sleeve pocket (see picture) and I wear it everywhere.
And recently someone passed me on the street and was like "EYYYYYY MSU! fuckin awesome!"
I have stolen Sparty valor.
Who are our rivals? I gotta go pick some fights to justify my awesome sweater.
Could be worse. I bought a sweatshirt at a thrift store because it was like new and had a nice looking embroidered logo for something called Dual II, which I assumed was a twin-bladed razor it something.
I wore it to an organic farm and got some strange looks. Turns out Dual II is a pesticide.
Aaaaaahahahaha this is like the time I wore my Pennsylvania Dutch Air Force hoodie on the Amtrak and got the stink eye from like ten Amish paterfamili.
There’s a branch of the Medicis that moved to Ireland and now are running a successful chain of fried chicken restaurants which is a very different vinbe from when they were like buying popes and stuff
Correction: it's not the Medicis who run the Dublin fried chicken shops, but the direct decendants of the enemies of the Medici; the Borgias. The chain is called Borza and is better known for fish and chips. They moved to Ireland in the early 20th century. They are also said to have introduced the deep fried Mars bar from Scotland to Ireland.
The Borgias, among the most feared and reviled families in European history, running a fish 'n chips shop with deep fried Mars bars is one of the funniest things I've ever heard. It's like something from a D&D campaign where they decided to completely change genres.

Also I cbf going beyond what I could read but I couldn't find mention that the Borzas of Borza are in fact related to the Borgias; what I did find in a Reuters article (https://www.reuters.com/article/world/italian-clans-mark-years-of-frying-fish-for-irish-idUSTRE64R1V3/) was that they and a bunch of other Italian chippie owners in Ireland are from the same "valley halfway between Rome and Naples" and I'm fairly sure the Borgias were from Spain and if you want to find present-day Borgias you'd be better off looking there.
But on the other hand, the Borgias are apparently really are still around and one made it to President of Ecuador! At least according to Wikipedia on the page about their house (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_of_Borgia). And I guess Ecuador was colonised by Spain after all, so.

Sweet. And also I should maybe mention for the public's edification "Habsburg" is pronounced "Hapsburg." Goes back to before any standardized spelling you know. (I actually only realized it's spelled with a B when making the above post.)
whoops, misattributed the first image to the wrong interview; correct attribution should be that the original quote about the WhatsApp group was from an interview with Ferdinand Habsburg at the New York Times in 2023 and not the one with Eduard Habsburg at the Spectator in 2020, which is a podcast anyway and doesn't seem to have a transcript at the Spectator. dunno how I missed that it was in the NYT font haha, but I should've double checked the Spectator interview (instead of giving into my instinctive squick about going to their site and giving them web traffic, that one time I accidentally bought a copy of their magazine to read on the train last decade was enough money from me)
I'm literally working outside of work hours rn (taking a lil break) to enter plover data bc these little buggers are so busy rn I spend all of my time in the field

The reblog chain is one of the things that makes Tumblr unlike anywhere else. All the notes on reblogs are attributed to the original post, no matter which branch people actually liked or reblogged. We want to keep encouraging conversations, and give contributors the recognition they deserve.
Soon, you'll be able to like, reblog, or reply to any part of a reblog chain, and that note will go to that reblog's author. Each reblog will have its own counts, instead of one aggregated number from every version of the post. And yes, you’ll be able to like multiple posts in one chain.
If a reblog doesn't add anything, the love flows up to the last person in the chain who did. Your post doesn't lose notes just because people spread it quietly.
Past notes will stay on the original post — we're only changing what happens from here on out. Retroactively re-attributing all of them would be... a lot.
This is just the beginning. More changes are coming as we keep building this out – stay tuned!
We rolled out a significant change to how notes work on reblogs, and the reaction has been strong. We're not going to pretend otherwise.
First things first: We're reversing the change. Your feedback in comments, emails, and especially reblogs, made clear that the rollout created problems we need to address before moving forward. We also should have communicated this differently from the start, and we didn't.
We still believe there's a better version of how reblogs can work. One that gives every voice in a chain the credit it deserves. But we want to get there with you.
In the coming days we'll share more on how we plan to do that, including ways to work directly with some of you on this and future changes before they ship.
you may be thinking that some of the reactions to the tumblr update are unfounded or panicky. but i meant what i said: this will fucking destroy any artist on this site.
for your reference, i tracked down one of my original posts; which had a notes section that looked like this:
and here is what it looks like now:
holy shit. by my math, that is not even two percent of the amount of aggregate notes my writing actually has. i am not able to see any of the literal hundreds of replies, comments, or tags.
maybe this is a bit presumptuous but i consider myself to be fairly popular on this site. i still remember the first time a large blog "picked up" my work - how quickly all of a sudden i was getting seen. notes on my poetry jumped from like 10 to 300 to 3k. overnight. that was the magic of tumblr, and the incredible writing community i found here.
but now if i answer any of my fellow writers, if i say please go check this out or even if i add additional context to my own work - the artist is removed completely from their own content.
do you want to reply to an "ask game"? do you want to reply to a story prompt? do you want to just make a funny joke with your friends? well, that sucks - you might be depriving them of literally 98% of their notes.
it isn't about clout chasing. it is about giving creators control over their own materials. even a silly post deserves to be connected directly with the person that thought it up.
the tumblr feedback form is currently crashed for me, but when it's up, everyone please go (politely! calmly! like you're walking in a burning building!) tell them what you think. in the meantime: @staff @changes like... i am begging you. literally just set up a suggestion box for ideas on how to monetize tumblr, surely one of us can help you.
as a denizen of this busted ass website for half my life now i do know how staff works and i’m going to lay out what they think will happen as someone who has witnessed this exact thing play out
People get very mad for a few days and then roll over and accept the change to the enclosure. This is what they are betting on. They have had meetings about this.
Getting around it: set an alarm. Get mad not just now, but in a few days, a week, two weeks. They are expecting people to sigh and get over this very odd edit to the site in a few days. Keep flooding them for more than just tonight. Be mad for the week, for the month. Leave a message every day.
this is what this post looks on desktop (where the change has gone into effect)
and this is what it looks like on the app where i've disabled updates
this is what it looks like after i added this rb to it
Also it’s really important to note that I can still edit and fuck around with this post and reblog it a thousand times even if op deletes the root or disables rbs. It’ll change nothing. They no longer have control over their post. Hate campaigns are about to get much much worse
big shout out to tumblr for being the first major site in like two years to implement an ill-advised "feature" nobody wants, likes or respects that doesn't involve AI
Like this whole thing wouldn't be a terrible idea... if OP still got post control.
That means being able to see all reblogs and comments from the root post, and that means being able to turn off reblogs for the whole post.
The ability to comment on specific reblogs is actually a good idea, but taking away OP's ability to even see what's going on with their post, and taking away their ability to decide that they don't want it spreading, is extremely bad. Just add those two things back in for the love of God
Under the new post model, flagging a thread's root post as non-rebloggable affects only the root post and any reblogs without comments; reblogs with comments which were made before the root post was made non-rebloggable now remain rebloggable, regardless of the root post's settings.
Further, there doesn't seem to be any mechanism at all for flagging a reblog with comments as non-rebloggable, not even by the reblog's own author; the upshot is that any post that's been reblogged with a comment even once effectively cannot be made non-rebloggable at all.
Between this and rendering nearly all non-first-order reblogs with comments undiscoverable to the author of the original post, I imagine harassment campaigns are going to have a field day!

This is just the beginning. More changes are coming as we keep building this out – stay tuned!
It’s very clear that you all have strong feelings about Tumblr and about this change. We hear you. The passion people have for how Tumblr works is one of the things that makes this place special.
As this rolls out over the next few days and you explore it, we’ll keep reading your replies and reblogs, so please keep sharing your questions, concerns, and ideas.
Your creativity has always been the heart of Tumblr, whether you’re the original poster or adding something brilliant in the reblogs, and nothing about this change is meant to limit that.
If you’d like to talk directly beyond the comments, leave a reply and we’ll follow up with as many of you as we can. We want to work with you to make Tumblr better.
