This episode is about grief, nobody fucks. She does drink, both alone and in company though (although I don't have the feeling it was for pleasure)

(& 10) are the season closers and are just plain old action episodes. We get some of being willing to lie to the admiralty - although that's expected for a captain - and more of Nahla's interpersonal physicality when she hugs Anisha and no-one questions it.

So I am pretty sure if there were more than 10 episodes a season (and we were getting more than 2 seasons) Nahla Ake could continue to be a captain who fucks. Unless they nerf that by putting her in a committed relationship with Kelrec.

If you went to all the trouble to escape the narrative in the first place, changing maps is probably the most appealing of those options. But! Make sure you are using the right command -- in many cases there is a distinction between the command for moving to a new map as you are, and for reincarnating in a new map as a blank self, empty of all the joys, sorrows, and inventory items of your past life, preserving nothing of who you once were save the intangible connection to user input some call "the soul".

Which is a valid choice, it's just important to not get them mixed up.

With this sudden amount of conversation of AI-assisted fics and such, is there a specific fic or fics that people are talking about as being "super popular" but obviously AI written? I feel so out of the loop

I believe the uptick in conversation is in reaction to this. The Reddit post links to a conversation/document that explains a specific html markers which proves that a piece of text has been copied + pasted directly from Claude AI, and then includes a rundown of how many of these markers were found in a subset of very popular fics in the Heated Rivalry tag on AO3, some of which are extremely popular and successful (as in, very high stats, are talked about and recommended a lot, authors have name recognition).

This marker only exists if text was copied directly from Claude AI into the AO3 text box. It wasn't originally identified in a fandom context and doesn't occur if the text was copied from Claude into ie a Word doc or if a different LLM was used. It also doesn't differentiate between text that was completely generated by Claude and text that was only edited by Claude for formatting or spelling.

The main takeaway from this experiment is, in my opinion, that AI use in fanfiction is widespread and ubiquitous and not detectable to most people. There is no reliable way to tell if a text was written using AI because of how LLMs work and what they were trained on, but a lot of people ARE using AI to write fanfiction and the results are good enough to make AI use rewarding.

The other thing is that it complicates the way fandom as a community talks about AI use in fic. Most people don't want to read fic that uses AI, which disincentivises writers from disclosing their AI usage. People have been using AI accusations to bully and harass authors, which is bad because bullying is bad, but also apparently a lot of authors are using AI and vehemently denying it when asked. Reconciling all of this in a way that satisfies all the different interests and ideals about fandom conversations is going to be really, really difficult and probably get really, really ugly.

it's pretty interesting to me actually that people seem to sometimes interpret woodes rogers as the real villain of black sails bc i can't really think of anything rogers does that the protagonists don't also do. the writers go to great pains to show that he is kind of Exactly the same as flint except his circumstances (straight, upper-class) allow him to stay on the side of empire. down to changing the name of his dead brother so you can't possibly miss it. he says it, out loud! he even has the same speech that flint does about acknowledging and accepting that to his audience he is in the role of villain. what makes this role real in one instance and fake in another? why, in black sails, would villainy ever be real and not a matter of perspective? the only difference between rogers and flint is that rogers is on the wrong side, and the writers are very careful to show that that is a matter of circumstance and not of character.

Manipur protest: Manipur, one of India’s northeastern states, has witnessed violent ethnic conflict between the majority Meitei community and the minority tribal Kuki community since 3 May 2023. Protests are ongoing.

The agitation opposed the Ken-Betwa river-linking project and other development works. Their leader, Amit Bhatnagar is on the 18th day of his hunger strike. He is still in the ICU at Madhya Pradesh’s Chhattarpur District Hospital, where he was admitted on July 19. Though he was to be discharged yesterday morning, hospital authorities have not yet permitted his discharge.

Karnataka AI Township Land Acquisition protest: Greater Bengaluru Integrated Township (GBIT) is being developed across Bidadi and Harohalli, roughly 40 km from Bengaluru, spread over nearly 9,600 acres. This will displace farmers.

There are layers to this. Earlier in the episode, Xena discovers her secret while they're sharing a locker room. A woman she has got naked with turned out to be trans. It's the exact scenario terfs are always fear-mongering about, but Xena just shrugs it off.

Also, the kiss was a big deal not just because it was gay but because the trans actress was HIV positive. They wanted to show the world that you can't contract HIV just from kissing someone. Bear in mind, the AIDS crisis was still fresh on people's minds in the 90s.
