Alrighty, please don’t come after me for this, but someone, please, for my mentality’s sake, explain to me the differences between a spell, a charm, a curse, a jinx and a hex. It confuses the hell out of me when I’m trying to write.

I think a spell is something that you put on a human which doesn’t necessarily have bad or good effects on them, a charm is something that you use to do something or that passively does something/ helps with things. A curse is something evil that you put on something or someone and a hex is also bad but not as bad as a curse and it’s exclusively put on living things. And lastly a jinx is in my opinion something mischievous that you put on someone.

Snape question of the day: what´s you weirdest/most random Snape headcanon.

he was (secretly) good friends with pomona sprout. where his friendship with minerva was often comprised of bantering that bordered on sassy insults, it was the opposite with pomona. they would spend many a quiet afternoon in the greenhouse engaged in idle chitchat, with her tending the plants and him reading, and pomona was the one person snape could rant to about students (or albus) and not be judged or looked down upon. pomona had long figured out that one effective way to calm severus down was to allow him to work with his hands, so she would ask him to help her with his plants, a much safer alternative to brewing potions in a temper, while he vented and raged. he also had a key to the greenhouses and was allowed to take potions ingredients from there whenever he liked. (slughorn wasn’t granted the same courtesy and for that severus was smug). she usually asked for nothing in return except for his company which he freely gave and that she enjoyed, even though he smoked in the greenhouse to the point that she had to confiscate his cigarettes and threatened to feed him to the growing Devil’s Snare in the corner. when severus became headmaster and things went to pot, they largely avoided each other, but that was more severus’ doing. he would meet her eye but hold a blank look, but when engaging with others would be aggressive or cutting. she never really know what to think, but was more confused than afraid. on more than one occasion, the greenhouses would carry the faint smell of cigarette smoke and once, all the mandrakes for the second years were repotted without her doing. she told no one. after snape died, half of what had been his potion stores were bequeathed to her as it was a handful of experimental plant tonics and growers, complete with research notes, that he’d apparently been working on for the past year while he had been headmaster. a note came with it. an attempt for an apology for my recent lack of company. i hope to remain your faithful friend, at least in memory, severus snape that night, pomona sprout smoked her first cigarette in the cool quiet darkness of the hogwarts greenhouse.

Ok hear me out. Remember the boggart? I always read theories about what Snape’s boggart would be, would it be his dad? Voldemort? The house he grew up in? Would it be werewolves or James Potter et all? I propose that what he would see would be himself. An alternate version of him, still fully believing in the Dark Lord and fine with people dying either by his wand, hand or through his potions. Can you imagine the ammount of self hatred a half blood would have to feel, the rage and pain it would take to have him join the death eaters? Then later learn and interalize that what he did was wrong, the guilt and regret of being the reason lily died on top of all that.

It is not hard to link to your Tumblr or Twitter with a vague message like, “If you’re looking for my other works or other ways of supporting me, go here: link.” I have had people buy me coffees after enjoying my fic and asking where to support me. I threw up a link to my Tumblr and people cared enough to follow it. They were fully understanding when I explained in the comments that they could not commission me and I could not link them directly to any donation platform, but they could go to xyz link to read more. And they did! Nobody has to put AO3 directly on the firing line.

Go ahead and commission independently. Just do it anywhere else except on AO3. And then don’t come crying to the community when you, personally, get a C&D from a massive corporation.

AO3 is our bullet shield. Tumblr will pull your shit down. Wattpad won’t fucking protect you. LJ and FF.net already sold our asses for one (1) corn chip. AO3 is trying to protect us, you goddamn lemmings.

If you cannot follow the rules that protect fanspaces, you do not belong in our fanspaces.

hc: flitwick's role in snape's life

we all know albus would have been like a father figure to snape, but what would flitwick, who was likely not as old as albus but also not as young as severus, have been for him?

maybe some kind of fun uncle or semi-mentor figure who allowed severus to experiment with spells freely?

maybe someone who truly understood the depths of severus' intellect (flitwick would know, of course, having been the head of ravenclaw for ages), and challenged him as such, always throwing at him little puzzles or quandaries for him to chew on, or present to him things they could debate about?

i can imagine flitwick, after severus finally succeeded at perfecting an immensely difficult spell of his own design, stepping back in awe and saying, "oh, severus. i would have loved to have had you in ravenclaw", with utmost sincerity, and severus would freeze, shocked at the admission, but would just respond with a quiet nod.

i can also imagine him playing tricks like stealing minerva's chocolate bourbons and sharing them with severus. when minerva finds out their tongues are festooned with yellow spots for a week and all their robes are suddenly a shimmering, garish scarlet.

flitwick just seems like a light, fun-loving guy who would know best how to have handled someone of severus' intellect. they would have enjoyed picking each other's brains and maybe competing as to who could get the most articles published in a month. i think with that kind of colleague around the pre-harry at hogwarts years would have been pretty pleasant for severus.

personal take but

i always wondered why a lot of marauders art feature a racebent james but never anyone else? why is it always james but never sirius, remus, or peter? what’s the reasoning behind it?

i would think people racebend james because a lot of people imagine a poc!harry which is…another thing in itself. but if there was anyone in that motley crew whom i would actively racebend it’d be lupin. trying to fit into a society that he inherently stands out in and constantly succumbing under peer pressure? that’s peak asian in white society vibes tbh. peter too, since he’s like a token friend and never actively gets into trouble the same way james and sirius do. sirius can also be racebent to a certain extent, especially with the way he’s brought up. (asians can be extremely xenophobic and racist, mind. it’s why arranged marriages are a popular thing even now. heck we’re even racist against ourselves, e.g. east asians vs southeast and south asians vs middle easterners, and then all the domestic strife in between due to skin color, religion, etc).

but definitely not the guy who’s landed gentry and who uses his privilege to step on people while getting away with it scot-free. that’s something that poc, rich or not, will rarely be able to do, especially as teens.

art is art and you can create anything, but when something is as popular as racebent james (and to a certain extent, harry) potter, it really makes you question why people are so attracted to that concept, especially if they’re not poc themselves.

This post is actually such a good explanation of why mauraders fans chose James to be their token POC character: He’s the only one without another alibi.

As @sneverussape says above, the other three mauraders all have complications that, to some degree, explain their behavior. Remus, as a werewolf, is on the edge of the group because he is on the edge of wizarding society generally. If he behaves badly, it’s just because he’s afraid of becoming even further outcast. Sirius, the fucked up one, comes from an insular and traumatic family situation which he imperfectly deals with. If he behaves badly, it’s just because he’s traumatized or still overcoming his conditioning. Peter is the token friend who the others seem to barely tolerate. If he behaves badly, it’s either for the same reason as Remus or… well, Peter was evil anyway, we don’t talk about him.

And what has James got? Nothing. There’s nothing in the text that provides an “out” for James’ allegiance to upper crust good-old-boy British abuse of privilege. If he behaves badly, what can excuse him?

So for James’ fans who feel he is the paragon of fictional male perfection, there are only two options: either investigate why you’re so attracted to upper crust good-old-boy British abuse of privilege, or create an “out” that will—in your own mind—excuse James’ behavior.

The latter is what making James POC does. It instantly vanishes his generational wealth, his bullying, his abuse of power, and his reliance on classic white British male tropes of effeminacy as insult. Because, as we all know, no person of color could do any of those things (/s!). And the best part is, there’s no critical thinking or investigation of values necessary.

It is doesn’t surprise me that this fan-favorite racebending was started by white teens, because it relies on a particularly white liberal kind of racism that claims that people of color cannot be bad people simply because they are people of color. For them, changing James’ race changes other major components of his character automatically.

One thing I have not seen mentioned in light of this statement, perhaps because it's just well known or perhaps because it's been forgotten, is that Radcliffe has dealt with this before. About 10 years ago his friendship with a trans musician named Our Lady J became known to the tabloids. They immediately published sensational articles calling her a transvestite and a drag queen (she was not), and speculating about the nature of their relationship. He responded to insinuating questions by simply being aggressively positive about what a great musician and good friend she was. They did at least one interview together for a queer magazine. This at a time when trans people were even more marginalized than now, and when he as an actor was finishing Harry Potter and under a lot of pressure to ~manage his image~ as he transitioned to an adult career.

TL;DR - Radcliffe has a record of not just saying nice things, but supporting trans people in his life.
