Planetary Torus.
I tried making noncorporate polities warm-colored and corporate ones cool-colored. But not sure I got that all right, and sometimes it's ambiguous.
Thank you to mensah for sharing their transit time notes with me!
This is Very Cool
I would like to add that we actually have a decent idea of the time to travel from PortFreeCommerse to Mihira & New Tideland. In the first chapter of Artificial Condition, during the first meeting of Perihelion and MB, we get this line:
"This is why I had been a free agent among humans for less than seven cycles, including time spent alone on a cargo transport, and I already needed a vacation."
So less than seven cycles, but probably not that much less.
Note that it mentions that news could have
"come through a wormhole with one of the faster passenger transport"
So this trip can actually be made faster than that week. They are Very Close together!
oh awesome! I’ll add that to my image later, thank you
Story time:
In middle school biology, we did an experiment. We were given yams, which we would sprout in cups of water. We then had to make hypotheses about how the yams would grow, based on descriptions of yam plants in our books, and make notes of our observations as they grew.
Here’s what was supposed to happen: we were supposed to see that the actual growth of the plant did not resemble our hypotheses. We were then supposed to figure out that these were, in fact, sweet potatoes.
What actually happened was that every single student in every single class lied in their notes so that their observations perfectly matched their hypotheses. See, everyone assumed the mismatch meant they had done something wrong in the process of growing the plant or that they had misunderstood the dichotomous key or the plant identification terminology. And, thanks to the wonders of a public school education, everyone assumed the wrong results would get us a failing grade. We were trying to pass. We didn’t want to get bitched out by the teacher. Curiosity, learning, science - that had nothing to do with why we were sitting in that classroom. So we all lied.
The teacher was furious. She tried to fail every student, but the administration stepped in and told her she wasn’t allowed to because a 100% fail rate is recognized as a failure of the teacher, not the class. It wasn’t even her fault, really, though her being a notorious hard-ass didn’t help. It was a failure of the entire educational system.
So whenever I see crap like Elizabeth Holmes’s blood test scam or pharmaceutical trials which are unable to be replicated or industry-funded research that reaches wildly unscientific conclusions, I just remember those fucking sweet potatoes. I remember that curiosity dies when people are just trying to give their superiors the “right” answers, so they can get the grade, get the job, get the paycheck. It’s not about truth when it’s about paying rent. There’s no scientific integrity if you can’t control for human desperation.
And this is also why, when you do your proper legwork and click through to an article from the headline, and click through the headline to the referenced study, that you do that one extra step and find out who paid for the study. Especially if you agree with the headline, article, or abstract of the study.

This is one of my husband’s favorite short stories. He quotes it from memory. I’m pretty sure he can recite the entire thing from memory.
This is a tremendously impactful short story and every time I see it, it serves as an excellent reboot button for my state of mind.
One of the compelling things about Project Hail Mary is that you can't fix it.
"What if Stratt didn't force Grace to go?" Then the Earth dies.
"What if Yao and Ilyukhina had survived?" Then they all would have died in space, not enough food to get to Earth or Erid
If the Taomoeba hadn't escaped then Grace would have never seen his best friend again. Returning to a world he loves but no longer recognizes.
If the stars weren't dying then Grace never would have met his best friend at all. Living content but alone.
Project Hail Mary is a hopeful story. It is a story of friendship and what it means to be brave. It's a story about saving the world.
But you can't remove the tragedy of the story without making it unrecognizable. It's written into the bones.

I finally caught my Gold Neons and Threadfin Rainbows shoaling together!! They only do this sometimes, usually right before their dinnertime, and it's really cute because it's kind of unusual for two species to shoal together, especially ones that are such different colors and sizes <3
ENJOY MY FISH BEING FRIENDS
Honestly, Tvyek is pretty miraculous. It’s permeable to water vapor but not to water, it’s nearly impossible to tear, but can be easily cut. It’s cheap and made entirely without binding chemicals. In addition to being used for wristbands, it’s used to wrap construction sites to keep out water during construction, for tear-resistant envelopes at Fed-Ex, coveralls for mechanics, and my wallet, actually.
Fun tip, though it looks like paper, Tyvek is plastic, and cannot be recycled with paper.
holy fuc
I didn’t even know it had a name
The energy-efficient desalination system produces fresh water without chemical additives and transforms leftover salts into useful materials
Desalination is the process of generating freshwater from brackish or saltwater, usually through the process of reverse osmosis. While this can be a very useful tool in water shortages, it also has some pretty huge drawbacks--reverse osmosis requires a lot of energy, requires chemical treatment of the water, and produces concentrated brine as a waste product which can be harmful to aquatic ecosystems.
Researchers have recently discovered a new way to perform desalination using solar energy, which doesn't require chemical inputs and collects waste salt instead of producing brine. Concentrating the waste salt in a solid form instead of brine means that it can later be processed to extract valuable minerals like lithium.
