I dream of a world where the concept of disordered personality would place where the disorder is actually rooted as the focus.
Someone doesn't just have a disordered personality, it starts in a disordered environment, no one person is the start and end of the disorder, of the problem, the symptoms; the physical, emotional, mental setting that the ego is stopped from coherently forming in, the natural temperament forced to live in a way that is completely scarring to it, it all has to be out of order for a long time before you ever see a person emerge disordered- to warp the actual personality structure before it's even solidified.
Yet it's always framed as the person problem, not the conditions of the environment, the unaddressed dysfunction that creates the suffering, carrying on everywhere in the world without much scrutiny, yet people who are products of it get the name and blame as if they self originated it all.
The one who is picked apart, is always the individual personality, not the reality that created it. Any person who's adapted to have these personality structures, has formed completely normally, reacted completely normally, to situations so debilitating, so horrifying for one reason or another, that they are fundamentally structured in a way tailor made to survive their environment, to such a deep extent that even a change in environment, even after physically leaving it behind into "normal" settings, the structure remains, only ready for the kind of world which created it in the first place
I dislike the implication that these "disorders" were not once very adaptive, a very good response to something destructive or depriving, yes everyone has responsibility over what they ultimately do, but the idea that people are the disordered ones instead of the field that formed them, just seems to inevitably create so much nasty stigma and misunderstanding.
If there would be acknowledgment and built in methods of addressing disordered lack of safety, disordered environments of shame, of insufficient attachment, especially in the so called education system, around the age the traits and patterns start but don't yet become the solidified "personality disorder", I believe far fewer people would be suffering.
But our institutions won't ever do that while they are not aiming for human flourishing above performance, profit, government interests, fitting a mold, or treating symptoms because it's profitable and easy instead of true investigation...
