if you elect me king of the universe i will make it so everyone can assign their period to a man of their choice. we will call it reparations for the patriarchy.
#I'd have to decide#several candidates present themselves
@ilikemarthajones of course you'll be able to pick a different man for each individual period
What happens if we all pick the same man, at the same time? Would he bleed to death? Should we start a rota
I have put some more thought into it, here is how it would work:
A period is defined as lasting from ovulation to ovulation. You can reassign it at any point in that cycle, but only ever the specific period you are currently experiencing.
A man only experiences multiple periods at once if he's assigned them by people who are ovulating on the same day. Since human menstruation is asynchronous, even if he's assigned multiple periods, it's much more likely he'll experience them successively.
He will have all the symptoms that come with that specific period.
Menstruation won't kill him. It's perfectly natural. Bodies are built to withstand it. He won't lose that much blood. Most people experience only mild symptoms anyway. Even a couple simultaneous periods won't kill anyone.
If he's assigned a lot of periods, hundreds to thousands, then yes, that could kill him. But lbh if he pissed off that many women, he probably deserved it.
Boys will become eligible for periods at age 14 and age out of it at 65. To keep it fair, anyone 55 or older at the time of implementation will remain eligible for the rest of their life.
It will not be possible to trace a period back to the original owner.
Once a period is reassigned, there's no way to stop it or take it back. He'll just have to deal with it.
Thank you for this meticulous planning and research!
This
was the specific scenario I was interested in. Let's get to work!

Spotify Premium ad: âImagine playing music without interruptions! Infinite skipping! Replay the song you want! And even do it offline? No ads! Whatever songs you want! For a small monthly payme-â Me: *nods, turns off Spotify and turns on my MP3 player and does all the things they offer, but for free and with songs they donât even have*
For those of you who might not know how to do any of this:
To convert CD audio into mp3s, you just follow the steps here
To play mp3 files, you download an mp3 player like Winamp here and away you go
On mobile? There are plenty of free mp3 players for your phone available, too, so check them out
You donât need to be tethered to an online streaming service for your music. Be free.
You can also rip audio files from youtube and find files all over the internet. It is far easier to come across great and lesser known music if you dont limit yourself to spotify.
Hereâs a tutorial on how to get the music and playlists you like with unlimited listening/downloads. This is a free way to do it that I believe is a balance between cost, time, and pros & cons:
If you have the CDs, it will be easier to rip them. Most music managers include this feature and you will have all the track information loaded into the file. There are also pirate websites where you can download entire albums with their metadata attached, but there could be risks associated (I would worry more about viruses than lawsuits these days, though). Deciding a method for acquiring music is a balance of the required time, the alternative costs, and other pros/cons like supporting the artist or taking the risk of pirating sites.
1. Find the song on Youtube. YT has pretty much every song at this point, usually in comparable quality to what you would get on a streaming service.
This is great if you already listen to music on Youtube, but there might be a better method for going direct from Spotify, though this will work either way. The main downside to this method is that official music (and even lyric) videos sometimes have non-music portions so you might have to listen to the whole thing to be sure. SponsorBlock will highlight non-music sections for most artists, so if you have it installed you can tell at a glance if this is the case.
2. Download the audio from YT. There are many ways to download YT videos completely for free. Itâs probably against the YT terms of service, but youâre not going to get sued.
I like y2mate for downloading YT videos (or their audio in mp3s) because itâs a simple, ad-free website. You just paste in the URL for the video you want to download. Sometimes itâs laggy and you have to come back later, but usually after a few moments the video loads, you select your download quality (the highest), and then save it. For easy file management, download everything in folders for the Artist, and then sub folders for the Album, and name the MP3 file the âsong nameâ.mp3.
3. Upload to your music player/manager of choice. The file will currently be lacking metadata (Artist, Album, track number, etc) and will be added to the library as a song with its title set as the file name minus its .mp3 extension. Various music players/managers have different ways to add metadata (usually accessed by right-clicking the song) with varying ease.
iTunes is free and and logical if you have an iPhone, but limited in its capabilities. I do all my management/listening in MusicBee (free for Windows) because of its playlist and management features, as well as having a very customizable interface. You can set it to scan the folders you download music to so it will automatically load things into your library, or do so manually. Once loaded into MusicBee, you can batch edit an entire albumâs metadata at once easily with Auto-Tagging. Auto-Tag can fetch the details from the internet and fill in artist, tracks, album artwork, etc and save that information to the mp3 file. You can edit this manually if needed too. Drag and drop the edited songs to any other player you may want to add them to so it can find the files.
4. Now you can use the player of your choice to listen endlessly, form playlists, etc. Some free music managers also have music discovery/recommendation features for expanding your collection.
MusicBee allows you to create playlists with folders, subfolders, and dynamic features. You can export these playlists for cross-platform play on other computers with MusicBee installed. I think the playlist features on MusicBee are better than what is on streaming services. You can create an auto-playlist of your recently-added music so you can easily find the ones that are new and might need need editing, adding to other playlists, etc. I have custom tags for music by LGBT artists, sapphic love songs, and more. I also drag-and-drop these playlists directly into iTunes so I have them on my phone too (you can do this to make a new playlist or just edit/add songs to a current one).
There are many music managers/players, including cross-platform ones with streaming, though they usually have fees for that feature. Because you arenât streaming the music and rather storing it, youâll need space on each device you want to play the music on, but memory is cheap these days.
You can buy a 2TB external harddrive for less than Spotify or Youtube Premium costs for six months, so having to store the songs isnât much of a downside. Plus, the song will never âleave the serviceâ, you can listen to it offline, etc.
I do encourage people to pay for art, especially from small, independent artists. You have to pay for art if you want to keep it alive, but there is debate over if streaming services are really âpaying the artistâ. Alternatives include buying and ripping CDs, purchasing merch or tour tickets (where artists make a lot of their money), etc to support them with something other than streaming views.
ID. a tweet from Don Hughes @/getfiscal dated Feb 18 21. it reads, âStarted imagining paying for Spotify for the next thirty or so years and got a bit dizzy, cancelled a bunch of subscriptions, installed Linux on my computer and then pulled out my old CDs to rip. Going caveman.â End ID.
Seconding MusicBee! Also, you can use a library subscription to access Freegal, which allows (depending on your library system) up to five free downloads a week. Completely free, actually legal, yours to keep, no DRM or any crap like that.
For indie producers, always check if they have something like Bandcamp! Bandcamp lets you download as well, and has significantly higher royalties going to the actual artists (Spotify pays them⊠very little).
Jsyk, winamp rips cds natively. You can set whatever bitrate you like. Been doing *that* since last century.Â
Itâs that time again:

Donât forget that you can borrow CDâs from your local library! Borrow, rip, repeat ad infinitum!
for playing mp3s on android - musicolet, very customizable, bajillions of options, and you can edit the metadata in-app including album art and lyric files
on firefox - thereâs a youtube video downloader add-on that lets you do it from page, though only as video - but most video players have an export-as-audio option
If you have installation privileges, I would strongly suggest Mediahumanâs audio downloader which, in addition to scraping youtube audio can also capture from a variety of other sites, is highly configurable, does not rely on a website provider choosing not to become malware, AND downloads/converts the audio in around the amount of time it would take that video to load?
so I found out Today that this year Microsoft cut windows media player off from the database that used to supply metadata when you rip CDs. wmp is a dinosaur anyway but still. come on. anyway the easiest thing I found (while trying not to be too distracted from work this morning) was EAC, Exact Audio Copy

This episode ends with Geordi saving the planet by using something derived from the technology found in his visor (an adaptive device that lets him sense things around him). So a disabled man literally saved the lives of an entire culture that wouldnât have considered his life worth living, using technology they would have never deemed necessary without the presence of his unique needs.
I donât watch Star Trek, but I canât stress enough how important this message is
My favorite thing about this episode is that, while the rest of the characters are taking a more Star Trek philosophical approach to this situation, calmly debating the good and bad points of this colony built upon eugenics, Geordi is just seething. Troi is having a romance with their flippinâ president, but Geordi never hesitates on his morals. Heâs always aware that this worldâs supposed perfection is built upon the despicable philosophy of killing people like him. He barely even bothers to hide his anger as he has to work alongside their scientists. Heâs snappish and short-tempered and bitter, clearly only working with these people because lives are at stake. When he discovers the solution is based on his VISOR, he is viciously triumphant, his joy at saving the people boosted by a bitter sense of righteousness that these people were only saved because someone like him was allowed to survive.
And even though this anger and bitterness are very un-Star-Trek-like approaches to diplomacyâit works. The scientist who works alongside him is the first person who decides to jump ship and leave the colony behind. She sees the stagnation of their bland ââââââutopiaââââââ and realizes that diversity and adaptation create a much better society. And while the other Enterprise crew members have some wishy-washy lament over how this will destroy this planetâs âââcultureâââ, Geordi never waffles. He has far too personal a stake in this to lose sight of the fact that peoplesâ lives are more important than any high-falutinâ philosophical justifications. The episode might waffle over the Prime Directive points of this societyâs decline, but Geordiâs perspective is the one showing clearly why it needs to die.

An interesting game where you are presented with 10 artifacts from the MET. You have to place where the artifact is from and what time period it is from. Each artifact scores up to 10,000 points, and you lose points the further away your guess is and how far off in time you are. You can only play once a day. Thanks to @baebeylik for showing this to me.
Today I scored really well. Yesterday ... not so much.

the thing that's dumb about the whole "can you be a fan of a video game if you're watching gameplay on youtube rather than playing the game yourself" discourse, is that people keep comparing that to "reading the wikipedia summary", when to me it's more comparable to "listening to an audiobook" because listening to a story being read is a fundamentally different experience from reading the book yourself, But i think it would be strange if people argued that listening to an audiobook means you're not experiencing the story at all. just because it's not the way you're generally suppose to engage with books as medium.

I'm loving this new trend of people going to zoos and participating in animal enrichment. We use to observe large exotic animals for our entertainment, but the fact is that we are now trying to make ourselves equally as entertaining for them. It's interactive, completely parpicipatory and I would argue that eventually someone's gonna come up with something new enough that it expland ethologists understanding about how some animals think, problem solve, communicate and feel and I think its fantastic.
Human: play?
Aquatic creature from an entirely different branch of the animal tree: play!
As an art major, while I know Fountain is a valid piece of art that accomplished exactly what it set out to do, I also think itâs one of the stupidest things. We have a urinal in a museum display. I have yet to see a work I think is dumber.
The thing I love most about Duchamps urinal piece is that it was so âlow costâ in terms of creative labour (compared to say, a large scale oil painting or sculpture for example), but itâs absolutely FULL of rage against the traditionalists and the world at that time and itâs SUCH a statement, itâs like, âoh just a mass manufactured item with a signatureâ but the reality of it is so many layers of meaning and without understanding the history at the time you donât get it.
Itâs an incredibly clever âfuck youâ and I love it
An old professor of mine, an expert in Duchamp who has written several books, has a theory. In part, âFountainâ was a prank, a personal âfuck youâ to the organization looking for artworks. Itâs importance cannot be overstated, and this importance stems from the fact that âFountainâ is /ridiculous/. It is enraging, it is hilarious, and it is very fascinating.
Aside from Duchampâs readymades, I love âBride Stripped Bare By Her Bachelors Evenâ. Pictured below, the work invokes a complex machine, one my professor spent a great deal of time studying. Eventually, he reached his conclusion. My professor had been pranked. He believes âBride Stripped Bareâ is a joke about masturbation, hidden to all except those study it excessively.
At first blush, Duchampâs works are stupid. Upon further study, theyâre very complex. And, upon true understanding, Duchamp is laughing at you. To me, it seems the closer you come to truly understanding Duchamp, the more he slaps you in the face with a large fish.
Let me rage about âtraditionalism revivalâ here. This is a dogwhistle.
As a lover of art, there are many complex and technically impressive works being created today, which both embrace different artistic traditions and break from them. To ignore those is to ignore contemporary art.
Here, OP is raging against conceptual art, which stimulates thought and challenges tradition. He wants his followers to believe that art has âdegeneratedâ, because the West has âdegeneratedâ. OP is intentionally engaging with fascist ideas of âdegenerate artâ.
If OP wanted to be accurate, he would seek to restore the Salon System, the Beaux Arts Academy, and classical training in the arts. The collapse of this specific system allowed for Modernism to evolve. Of course, thatâs not what OP is talking about. Heâs evoking beauty as a moral standard, telling his followers to ârestore Western traditionâ, to fight against aesthetic âdegeneracyâ in culture.
(By the way, Duchamp is commenting ON MODERNISM with âFountainâ. Duchamp submitted the work to the Society of Independent Artistsâ salon in New York, who would accept any work by any artist, for a small fee. In part, Duchamp is saying, âIs this what you Modernists want? A urinal? Look me in the eyes and prove this is not art.â
If OP dared to use his brain, perhaps he would agree with Duchamp here.)
The thing is that it isnât even a urinal! It doesnât match any model manufactured at the time. Also Duchamp was an accomplished ceramicist. Itâs likely that he made the sculpture and absolutely everyone is like âI know what a urinal looks like. This is sufficiently urinal-shaped for me to assume it is one without looking at it closely!â
Duchamp had other readymades, like his snow shovel, where if you actually look at the photos, the handle is square and the bowl is way too flimsy. Why would manufacturers make a snow shovel with a squared-off handle? Itâs impossible to hold! Duchamp slapped the âreadymadesâ label on all these items and the hoity-toity art people who were so good at looking at things didnât see it (probably because theyâd never had to do labor like shovel snow imo, amongst other things).
Marcel Duchamp. In Advance of the Broken Arm. Museum of Modern Art. (4th Version [Ed.!!!] after lost original of November 1915)
wait what. there⊠what?!?! IT ISNâT AN ACTUAL URINAL?!? or might not be anyway. what the fuck.
if the dude seriously did that, his troll game is out of everyoneâs league except Leader Kibo.
My favorite thing about Fountain (besides the fact it has been pissing off fascists for over a century, natch) is that the original was lost and he made a bunch of official editions to sell to various museums (after the original was lost, possibly on purpose).
And theyâre different! If it was a real âreadymadeâ he could have just bought some more at his local hardware store, but no. He changed them in OBVIOUS WAYS.
See the triangle of holes?
Hereâs the one from the Tate Modern:
Oh hello, cross-holes. Fancy seeing you here.
SFMOMAâs edition has the triangle holes, but it also has a line of holes at the top that are completely different from either other version.
Hereâs one from Moderna Museet. Line and a circular set of holes!
Duchamp definitely intentionally made these different on purpose. Itâs a âreadymadeâ but itâs not, really, each of these is a specific custom creation.
Itâs not even clear if he made it! He wrote a letter to his sister claiming that a female friend sent it to him, and he just enrolled it in the art exhibit under his own name. Thereâs also a possibility that that female friend was himself, since he later had a female pseudonym of Rrose SĂ©lav.
This whole piece of art is a fractal troll, and itâs a beautiful one.
My dash is full of struggling writers rn.
