Computers should still come with floppy drives. I'll die on this hill.
I don't want to email myself word docs, i don't want the cloud. i want a small-but-relatively-chunky item with a low storage capacity that's cheap to replace and easy to label and organize and i'm not joking.
i want to carry around a little case with diskettes in it that have all my personal projects on them labelled with a black marker that smudged just a little after I wrote the name on the disk.
i want a little box on my desk with color-coded floppy disks that all contain a single story or project im working on.
i wanna put the disk in the drive with a hefty 'k-thunk' noise and listen to the drive read the data.
I thought a lot of the copy protection relied on the inherently analogue nature of the medium. Stuff like weak bits that would flip on read because the magnetic strength was in between what it needed to be or the encoding was subtly off.

I submit to you that the most iconic feature of any animal is either unlikely or impossible to fossilize.
If all we had of wolves were their bones we would never guess that they howl.
If all we had of elephants were fossils with no living related species, we might infer some kind of proboscis but we'd never come up with those ears.
If all we had of chickens were bones, we wouldn't know about their combs and wattles, or that roosters crow.
We wouldn't know that lions have manes, or that zebras have stripes, or that peacocks have trains, that howler monkeys yell, that cats purr, that deer shed the velvet from their antlers, that caterpillars become butterflies, that spiders make webs, that chickadees say their name, that Canada geese are assholes, that orangutans are ginger, that dolphins echolocate, or that squid even existed.
My point here is that we don't know anything about dinosaurs. If we saw one we would not recognize it. As my evidence I submit the above, along with the fact that it took us two centuries to realize they'd been all around us the whole time.
So that people don’t need to go through the notes:
- We have fossils of spider webs
- Paleontologists have reconstructed the larynx (voice box) of extinct animals and we have a pretty good idea what vocalizations they were capable of
- Fossilized pigments have been found in a variety of taxa
- Soft tissues fossilize more often than you think; we have skin impressions for like 90% of Tyrannosaurus rex’s full body (shoulder blades and neck are the only bits missing)
If pop culture is your only window into extinct animals, then you do not remotely understand how much we know.
We know the entire lifecycle of a tyrannosaurus. We know from the sheer amount of remains we have, from every stange.
We know roughly how they sounded (as the person above me said).
We know they had remarkable vision.
We know they had the second. strongest sense of smell in history.
We know from their bones that they grew to a certain size and stayed there until about 14 or so, then absolutely ballooned up to their adult size in about three or four years.
We know they likely lived in family groups, because we have bones with certainly fatal injuries for a solitary animal (broken legs and such) that are completely healed.
We know exactly how other dinosaurs look, down to colors and patterns, because bones are not the only information that is preserved.
The Sinosauropteryx is one such dinosaur. Because pigmentation molecules were preserved in the feather impressions, we know it's colors, and it's tail rings (which one would argue would be it's "iconic feature."

Microraptor is another! We know from feather impressions that it had four wings. We know from pigmentation that it was an iredecent black, like a raven.

This is not limited to dinosaurs, or feathers. We've found pigmentation in scales and skin. We've completely reconstructed two extinct penguins, colors and all. We've figured out the colors of some non-avian and non-feathered dinosaurs. We can identify evidence of feathers existing on animals without feather impressions.
We have feathered dinosaurs preserved in amber.
We can defer likely behavioral patterns through adaptations we see in bones, and from the environments they were found in. We can see how certain movements evolved through musculature attachments (yes, how muscles attached is often preserved). We know avian flight likely evolved by "accident" by the way early raptorforms moved their arms to strike at their prey.
We also understand behavior in extant animals and can easily speculate likely behaviors in extinct animals. (A predator running for it's life is not going to exhibit hunting behaviors)
We learn and understand way more from "rocks" than paleontologists are given credit for. And if you watch a movie like Jurassic World, which has no interest in portraying anything with any sort of accuracy, and your take away is "We can't possibly know anything about these animals," then you don't understand science.
As for shrinkwrapped reconstructions, we understand how muscles attach, and how fat works. Artists who lean into shrinkwrapping are are not generally concerned with scientific accuracy, or biology. They're only concerned with Awesombro.
If true paleoartists tried to reconstruct a hippo, while they naturally would not get every bit correct, it would certainly look like a real animal, and not that alien monster that tumblr is so fond of using as "proof" that paleontologists don't know anything (an art piece that itself was extreme and satirical, and a condemnation of the particular subset of paleoartists I mentioned earlier)
Every time paleoblr tries to show you how extinct animals actually looked, all we get is a chorus of "thanks i hate it" and "stop ruining dinosaurs!"
I've recently learned that escaping enshitification is actually really easy. When I was younger I would use FOSS (free and open source software) because I usually couldn't afford anything else. Back then the paid options were usually significantly better than the unpaid options so when I finally got money I started using the paid stuff and completely forgot that Foss existed.
If you don't know why Foss is awesome its not just that its free. Open source software has a huge set of advantages. Most software is proprietary meaning that its code cannot be viewed by other people. Open source softwares code can be viewed by everyone and people can contribute their own code to make it better. Open source is often more secure than proprietary because more people have more eyes on it and more people have contributed to it's security. Its also easy to know how much privacy you have with every software because you can read the code. No more "trust me bro I'm not harvesting and selling your data" you know if they are collecting and selling because the code is publicly available.
In the last two months I have been switching almost completely to Foss. I was worried at first because when I stopped using Foss over 10 years ago the average Foss software was genuinely worse than the paid proprietary alternative. Thankfully things have really come full circle. 90℅ of the software I have tried in the last 2 months works better than the proprietary alternative and is 100℅ less obnoxious.
So here is a list of every Foss software I have tried and recommend. There is way more than this available. This list is just what I have used and like personally. Anyone can feel free to add and we can turn it into a master list. Please just take these as a place to start and do your own research to see if these softwares will work for your use case before you fully ditch your proprietary software.
Operating systems
Graphene os: android alt. Security and privacy focused. The most secure and private smartphone currently available.
Linux mint: easy to use linux, 100℅ better than windows.
Pop!: The Linux distro you should use if you have nividia hardware and want to play games using said hardware. Very intuitive and easy to use.
Kubuntu: Ubuntu Linux with KDE desktop. This is the linux distro one I am currently using and I don't have any plans to jump ship again. Better than windows and better than Mac. The companion app for your phone makes life soooo easy. Its pretty and easy to customize to a ridiculously granular level. No fucking notes.
Kindle jailbreak- ko reader: use jailbreak to free your kindle from the tyranny of the bezos. It will download ko reader which is a Foss OS that has every fucking feature you always wished kindle had and let's you read whatever the fuck you want, and have whatever the screensaver you want (no more ads!). Soooo fuck amazon and use this. I genuinely cannot recommend it enough.
Linux FOSS: (some available on windows and android as well)
Calibre: Foss desktop eBook library. Packed with features. You will want to use this with koreader to make managing your kindle easy.
Manuscript: skrivner alt. Does absolutely everything I need.
Bitwarden: password manager (use a keepass fork if you want self hosted)
Next cloud: private google drive and cloud alternative that you can self host if you want but it's not required. App available
Proton VPN: to the best of my knowledge it is the only Foss no log VPN you can get. You can pay for higher speeds. App available
Quad9dns: free encrypted DNS provider. App available.
News software:
Use any Foss RSS reader and for the love of god stop getting news from social media. Take control of your feed!
Apps (I only know for android)
Fdroid: great app store to find Foss android apps and download them.
Antennapod: you can get all of your podcasts fetched to one feature rich app via RSS feed. No need to rely on spotify or music steaming services.
Openreads: it's good reads but private and 100℅ stored locally. No amazon, no social media aspect, it just tracks your reading, you can import your good reads but if you want to import from storygraph you have to make a good reads burner account, import to good reads, then import to openreads. The menus Navigation on this one is a bit cumbersome but honestly good reads app is worse.
Newpipe: YouTube frontend that let's you have YouTube subscriptions, watch YouTube in the background, and blocks all ads, without logging in to YouTube. You will want to use this one with a VPN set to Canada (or any other country) so YouTube doesn't keep blocking it in order to force you to sign in. But even with that extra step its worth it for the privacy and the lack of ads.
Proton mail: one of 2 more private gmail alts. But you should note that email cannot be 100℅ anonymous or private.
I think that's it. There are still a lot software varieties I am slowly finding.
I just recently switched to Kubuntu from Linux mint and so far I'm enjoying it a lot more. Overall I've been on Linux for about a year and a half.
I do want to install GrapheneOS on my phone but am a bit nervous due to how much I have to use my phone for work related stuff and don't want to mess anything up.

Designer Justin Kirkwood makes some excellent points in his book (and video series) Liber Indigo: The Affordances of Magic, that we replicated the patterns of corporate hierarchy in our computer operating systems, and also chained ourselves to the metaphor of digital paper.

Setting aside any arguments about user freedom etc etc for the moment, consider that both Linux and graphical operating systems like macOS and Windows have the same features:
Hierarchical file/folder systems patterned after how things are stored in old-time paper-centric offices
Linear software processes designed like factory assembly lines
Hierarchical permission systems (admin, superuser, regular user, guest), often with firewalls and remote admin and supervisor-ware so that The Organization can see what anyone is doing or shut down or modify individuals' computers without their consent
Always with a drive to become ever-faster, ever-more-efficient, but not actually smarter or more helpful or flexible, much less working the way the human mind does.
It's trendy to lash out at soft targets like popular computer brands; It's much harder to pin down where we went wrong with computing entirely.
It's hard to identify where and when a certain set of assumptions took root about what computers are for, but it is somewhat easier to identify those assumptions as being "a tool of productivity," because we in the West over-value productivity as a result of cultural Calvinism and that culture's exploitation by capitalism.
So let's ask some questions about those assumptions:
What if computers weren't designed first and foremost for corporate productivity, but individual creativity and fulfillment?
What if they weren't hierarchical in structure, but instead more holographic or cooperative?
Or simple and deceptively toy-like?
Would such a computer need a command-line interface as we know it today?
Would it need a graphical user interface as we know it today?
It's clear in 2025 that to a generation that grew up as computer users and programmers (especially programmers in large institutions, where software replicates/replaces older paper-based processes) -- things we take for granted aren't understood by new computer users; hierarchical file systems, for instance. We often mock younger generations for having grown up with touchscreens. But we don't stop to question the hierarchical file system or the history, philosophy, and logic that it represents.
Some people love their preferred platform because of the sunk cost fallacy. They've invested years or decades mastering it, getting it to do what they want, it makes them feel smart and powerful, and they'd rather perpetuate it so they can continue to be a Master of the Universe, than throw it away for a completely new paradigm, or acknowledge that It's Not For Everyone.
My Mac runs a fork of BSD under the hood. I can use the zsh shell in the Terminal and do command line stuff if I need to. But the question is, why should I have to?
The answer is usually rooted in "control." For some people, typing commands is faster, and it gives them access to certain tools to perform automated tasks. (There's no reason these tasks and tools couldn't be exposed in the GUI, tbh.)
But there's a steeper learning curve to get all that power, and it puts the onus on the user to spend months/years learning to do things, and to deploy cognitive effort to execute tasks, so I'd argue the command line is inherently biased towards users with higher-than-average working memory, ability to remember complex tool commands, different scripting languages, etc.
Such a system may disadvantage those who are better at spatial/visual memory, mental imaging, and who can express tasks succinctly in plain language form (for instance: Boolean logic), but struggle to learn obscure commands designed for 4-bit computers from 1968.
I don't think that GUIs are great metaphors either, because the ones we chose - all deriving from the Xerox Star / Alto computer - were designed for an office productivity / document manipulation and storage system, which inherently reproduced the worldview and organizational flows of the corporate office it was intended for - representations of documents in folders in file cabinets, electronic mail replacing inter-office memos.
We really haven't reinvented the GUI since then, at least on the desktop. And despite the promise of phones and tablets and Siri and Alexa, we haven't quite broken out of those old metaphors yet.
