currently having thoughts about ai generated images and, like, poured acrylic paintings. in both cases, there is a human who comes to the tools with a vision, or at least some vague intention, who shapes the process - bringing inspiration, possibly even reference images; selecting a palette, or aspect ratio, or size; choosing which attempt they like best; deciding whether to let each section stay as-is or try and change it to their liking. the human doesn't have perfect control over the end result, but that's a feature of the medium - the serendipitous details you didn't seek out are filled in by an automatic process, a guided randomness.
and yet people keep saying ai art isn't "real" art because the computer can't have intention - there's no person trying to express or capture or communicate anything, it's just noise and math (leaving aside the wonderful art that can be made with just noise and math!). but there *is* a person there - the computer doesn't just decide to do that on its own. (and if it did... where do we draw the line on what counts as "intent", then?)
even if there were literally zero intent in the creation, if the machine were spitting out all possible images in sequence (well, for one, the creation of a machine that does that sounds like a work of art, to me, but setting aside the meta-level,). people will pick a still frame from a security camera and point to it and go "this is art". people will find an arrangement of leaves and rocks placed there by nature and point to it and go "this is art". duchamp (or perhaps elsa von freytag-loringhoven) very famously pointed at a urinal, anonymously designed and impersonally manufactured in a factory, and went "this is art".
art is not contained in the medium or manufacture of the art, but by one person pointing at something and entreating an audience to consider that thing as art. by someone saying "there is something in this that speaks to me, and i am presenting it to you in hopes that you will also hear it"
Imagine if astrology was real and astrophysicists realized that instead of building telescopes, you could do observations by just handing out out a ton of surveys. First detection of gravitational waves comes decades earlier in 1997, after a study of 300,000 sagitarius women finds than they break up with their boyfriends 23 minutes earlier than the cosmic baseline would suggest.
@blazingdarkness ?
Vampire girl explaining that vampires don’t necessarily have to kill someone to drink their blood, but she did kind of kill a lot of people back when she was all depressed pre-transition: “when I was an egg I ate four dozen lads”
My Shakespeare students (they are 12) wanted to summarize the lessons they learned this semester. If. Um. Anybody would like to see.
I cannot emphasize enough that they made these with very little input from me.
Henry the Fifth
- ALWAYS encourage others to do their best.
- NEVER talk about people behind their back.
Antony and Cleopatra
- ALWAYS check your produce for pests. [They liked this one so much made a rap about it.]
- NEVER count your chickens before they hatch.
Hamlet
- ALWAYS act decisively
- NEVER tell your girlfriend to go to a convent and become a nun [Oh boy they REALLY liked this one]
Romeo and Juliet
- ALWAYS collect all the important information before making an important decision
- NEVER bite your thumb at us, sir. [They enacted this scene in the original language a lot, except they swapped every “sir” for “bro.”]
The Merchant of Venice
- ALWAYS pay your debts.
- NEVER judge based on appearances, because “all that glisters is not gold.”
The Tempest
- ALWAYS try to forgive others.
- NEVER be a colonizer. [Yes, a middle schooler said this]
Midsummer Night’s Dream
- ALWAYS stay on forest trails
- NEVER fall in love with an ass. [They were excited about this one for obvious reasons.]
Twelfth Night
- ALWAYS stay in touch with those important to us
- NEVER read other people’s mail
Macbeth
- ALWAYS wash your hands. [One of the girls performed Lady Macbeth’s entire Out Damn Spot monologue at the end of the semester]
- NEVER succumb to peer pressure.
There was recently a copyright infringement case in YA and I need everyone to know that the following sentence was in the legal decision:
“Hot, sexy, dangerous boys, central to virtually all young adult romance novels, cannot be copyrighted.”
“Regarding setting, the court held that both works taking place in Alaska high schools was not protectable because Alaska is a public place and setting a teen novel in a high school is a common genre convention.”
Freeman v. Deebs-Elkenaney | Loeb & Loeb LLP
I've read the entire decision (skimming over the purely legal precedent/definitions bit) and here are some of my favorite bits:
Hot take, but even if you ARE punching up (instead of punching sideways at a group that is in the same boat as you), there's a limit to what you can say without sounding like a violent facist but woke this time.
Making fun of a group of people that are privileged over you is one thing, but wishing non-cartoonish violence and death on them ("they should fall off a cliff" vs. "they should be wiped out"), wishing sexual violence on them, dehumanising them, claiming that they're less capable of creating art or living meaningful lives, saying that their relationships are inherently shallow and fake - these things are fucked up. I understand venting and saying extreme things when in pain, but when you find yourself regularly posting about wanting certain people tortured and killed, you need to examine that.
When the only thing stopping you from completely dehumanising someone is your own judgement regarding their privilege level relative to yours, you are not a safe person to be around.
"convince your followers that their Oppressor Class (whether real or imagined) is less deserving of human rights" is the oldest and most reliable trick in the book to incite mass violence, and you're not immune to it because you're a Good Person with Correct Opinions. you will continue to be a potential breeding ground for fascist thought until you stop dehumanizing people in any context, regardless of whether they deserve it or not, or how serious you are. there can be no acceptable targets.
