Hey, uh, to the alarming number of various replies to the previous post about quitting, all I have is this to say: please, please quit.

Need to get out of a shitty job? Sit down and make a plan to get out. Look into going back to school - I cannot stress enough how useful a technical college degree is and how there are plenty of ways to get financial aid in pursuing a two year degree or apprentice program. Can’t do school right now, keep your eyes open. There’s better openings out there, and you deserve them.

College isn’t working? Take a break. Nobody cares how long it took for you to finish college. No one will blink at you changing schools or finishing college online. Don’t let the idea of failure ruin your mental health.

Querying that novel ain’t working? Put it aside. Breathe. You don’t need this rejection right now, you’re not in a race. Take a break on those edits. Put that first draft in a box and shove it under your bed.

Don’t let feeling for your coworkers, your boss, your customers, or your writing partners keep you stuck. Hustle culture is bullshit. You do not have to monetize your existence to be worth something. Taking a step back isn’t taking a step down. You’re not giving up anything, you’re pursuing other options that will benefit you in the long run.

Please quit.

I will add: you don’t owe your writing to anyone. Hate it? Vaguely don’t like it? Have apathetic feelings about it? Just need a break? Stop. Take a break. Sometimes you’ll come back and it’ll be better. Sometimes you won’t go back. But unless you are in some way legally bound to finish it, you don’t owe finishing it to anyone. I say this as someone who is atrocious at quitting things. I got myself through a frankly miserable university experience out of sheer determination to get a second degree simultaneously with my first, and frankly I am 0% better in my life for having that second degree. It has gotten me nowhere in my career, it has gotten me nowhere in my academic life. If I had quit my frankly absurd plan, I probably would have been happier. I also say this as someone who paid a frankly horrifying amount of money to leave my old apartment midway through my lease because living with my old apartment-mate was so miserable. Take the time, if there will be an active cost to quitting/leaving. Weigh what you could get from continuing. Weigh what you could get from leaving. But don’t let inertia be what keeps you there.

This new bill has been introduced in both the house and the Senate.

Among other things, it will:

Raise the monthly disability income by just over 30 percent - bringing it to poverty level.

Remove penalties for recieving financial help from friends and family.

Increase the amount of assets a disabled person may have from $2,000 to $10,000 (this hasn't been updated since 1989)

Update outside income restrictions to allow disabled people to receive up to $399 a month without reducing their benefits.

REWARD, not penalize, people who want to receive additional income while on social security income.

REMOVE THE MARRIAGE BAN YES YOU READ THAT RIGHT THIS WILL REMOVE THE MARRIAGE BAN

For those unaware current regulations do a lot to oppress disabled people. In fact marriage equality doesn't even extend to disbled people who risk having their benefits reduced or outright taken away if they marry someone. This means that in common law states disabled people can't even live with their significant other or they risk losing their financial independence.

Current regulations mean that if you're disbled you can't have so much as one penny over $2,000 to your name. So buying a car and gaining more independence or freedom is largely out of the question for disabled people.

Current regulations penalize social security recipients who receive income from outside sources, even if those sources are reimbursement. Did you get paid to babysit for a few hours? That's income, and you get your benefits reduced. Did you loan a friend $10 and they pay you back? The government considers that $10 income, and you get your benefits reduced.

These aren't mere anecdotes - these are all examples of actual things that have happened to disbled people I know, and if you have any disabled friends in your life I'm sure they can tell you the same stories.

If you value marriage equality, if you value financial independence, if you value the rights of disbled people, please PLEASE support this bill! Contact your reps, vote, and make noise! This is a great thing!

Also let’s be honest, cancel culture doesn’t exist. Those rich a-holes are still getting book deals, performing at comedy clubs, and hired at other jobs. That writer who plagiarized is now a bestselling author. Those authors who did shitty things are riding the controversies they cause to bestseller lists.

As long as we continue to avoid addressing what consequences should look like and how to dismantle systems that sweep abuse under the rug, the only people who suffer from cancel culture are average and marginalized folks who end up the targets of internet harassment.

Right, and the reason this is so pervasive is because people are trying to avoid addressing the systems that hold it up.

Let’s take the example of “problematic book is published,” in which all the heat falls on the author. But how many people were involved in getting that book published? Why didn’t the agent, the editors, the publishers take steps to address the problematic aspects? Did they lack the diversity in their ranks (the industry overall is 76% white, 81% straight, and 97% cis)? Was it a a purposeful decision? Was the author enabled into thinking it was a good idea by those seeking to profit from it?

A small time creator does something considered problematic and gets called out for it. Do they apologize? Do they take time to reflect on what was addressed and are able to talk to someone about it? Do they have the ability to differentiated between the people with legitimate points, or do they conflate them with those who death threats because they’ve don’t have the ability to care about other people on the internet? Or do they ignore their own fans attacking others and later center the event all on their feelings?

The latter scenario is a problem, and it does suck. It’s extremely difficult to have a reasonable response when you’re in a position where you feel like you’re under attack. But BIPOC and other marginalized people deal with this all the time. John Boyega and Kelly Marie Tran are hounded to this day by people who think their casting ‘ruined Star Wars.’ Black fans are chased out of fandoms for daring to draw/cosplay/write fanfic as Black people. Heaven forbid you ever headcanon a popular character as trans.

This happens because we’re not addressing the structures that enable it or the people that benefit from it. It happens because fandom identity trumps all and any critique of that feels like an attack. We are - as elumish said - not looking at the origins of the critique, and are instead getting sucked into the mechanisms that cause the problems in the first place.

You’re not wrong for feeling frustrated for being sucked into fandom drama, for feeling like someone is cancelling you for liking the wrong ship, for seeing a creator get hounded over something that could be fixed if given the chance. But it is unfortunately also on us to take a step back from that frustration to try to see how we got there, what we as individuals do to try to not cause further harm, and how we can support those who are trying to address an issue.

To add on, specifically about publishing: publishers reject people all the time. The vast majority of books written don’t get published. So a publisher choosing not to publish a book for some reason is not actually remarkable or indicative of some desire to “cancel” or silence that person. It means they think they won’t make money off of that book. We just hear about it when publishers make that decisions about conservatives or controversial people they realize are too commercially toxic to publish. Do you think it’s canceling when hundreds or thousands of authors of color (esp Black and Indigenous authors), female authors, disabled authors, and queer authors get rejected for being ‘unsellable’ or 'just not our brand’ or 'not quite what we’re looking for’? If you’re concerned about the few cis white authors who get publicly rejected but not the many marginalized authors who have been silently rejected and kept out of publishing spaces for hundreds of years, maybe you should reexamine your priorities.
