A major difference things like this don’t take into account is animation.

When the original pokemon were designed, they were just static six-bit colorless sprites. They had no clue what was to come in the next 20 years.

Over the next twenty years, pokemon has become insanely popular. Disney level popular. Each game has increased the animation until each one now has a fully animated CG model, rendered in far more detail than the first gen Gameboy sprites could ever dream of. It’s had thousands of cartoon episodes and around two dozen movies.

The newer designs are-

Much easier to animate, and more importantly,

Significantly easier for children to draw.

And that’s ultimately what this franchise boils down to: it has to be accessible to children.

This very thing that I was discussing with @kawaterrier - I think it was after the last "Death on the Nile" adaptation.

The detective does not need a backstory; they don't need a character arc. The quirks might change slightly; they may get older; but they don't evolve.

They are a compass that shows the right direction - not only discovers the truth but also shows what is right and what is wrong. When they appear, we can be sure that whatever crime is happening here, justice will be served.

The way I see it is that in the classic mystery stories, the detective is not the main character. The mystery is. And the detective is more like a tour guide for the viewer/reader to experience the mystery. They ask questions you should ask, gather clues for you, present possibilities and contradictions. The detective can be a fun, iconic character but, in the end, you came here to solve the mystery, not to learn about the detective's tragic backstory. Leave that to the noir fiction please.

Living in Australia, I'm kinda always at the mercy of my posts lining up with crappy timezones, so when I came back to Tumblr and realised there was a fully in-built post scheduling system, I was very excited...only to happily realise that even with that in mind, Tumblr has a much more 'time-blind' and relaxing approach to posts. It lifts my spirits whenever I see that somebody's gone through my catalogue or liked a post that had been put out days or even weeks ago, and it appears that that's a far more prevalent phenomenon on this site compared to anywhere else. It is VERY funny to me to see this video keep rolling across my social media feeds again and again completely divorced from its original context. See, this video is the creation of long-time "He-Man And the Masters of the Universe" super-fan James "BustaToons" Eatock, and was in fact originally made for the official "Masters of the Universe" YouTube channel when Eatock was put in charge of it several years ago (I want to say it was somewhere in the area of 2013 but it's been long enough that I can't remember) as part of a series of similarly humorous edits of the original FILMation cartoon called "Hee-hee-hee-Man". This one specifically, though, took on a life of its own, and is the only one of the edits to still be around via reuploads as the originals were all deleted some time after Eatock left the channel.
