You say like “oh I want you to be happy” and stuff, but it feels like what you really mean is that you want me to be better. You want me to be happy so that I can enjoy myself when I come home. You want me to be happy so I’m less anxious around my family. It’s not actually about me being happy-happy. If it were about me being happy-happy, it’d be about why I keep coming home to CT when I’ve said before it fucks with my head and makes me unhappy. If it were about me being happy-happy, it’d be about triggers and how to avoid them, it’d be asking what you can do to help. It’d be telling me that you love me and care about me even when my brain is fucked and I keep doing shit that people don’t understand, not asking me if I think I’m trying like I’m secretly victimizing myself.

Maybe I’m not happy because when I was 13 and crying about the way my dad treated me, you sent me an email that amounted to you accusing me of emotionally manipulating my father. My father, who at that point had already told my sister and I to get out of his house because we didn’t invite him to pizza with our mom, and when trying to explain that we just wanted alone time with our mom, said in our limited vocabulary “We didn’t want you there”, and he took that hurt as an excuse to hurt us back. Verbatim said to us “When you guys hurt my feelings, I hurt you back, and you know how it feels”. Maybe I’m not happy because I spent my childhood being told that the sh it my dad did wasn’t that bad, and even as an adult, I’m still treated with exasperation, instead of empathy, because you know it wasn’t that bad, but clearly I don’t, so you’ll let me have my precious bubble of my own perception, but don’t expect you to be happy about it. Maybe I’m not happy because when I see the house in CT, sometimes all I can think about is the time my dad threatened to destroy my room, or the time he told us not to come home for 7 weeks after we forgot to call him for 7 hours, and you told me that “isn’t kind of sad that he has to resort to that kind of behavior to get you guys to call him?”

My core issues, by the way?

1) I’m not good enough.

2) It’s always my fault.

3) My perceptions of every experience are wrong, especially when they come to my childhood and how it felt.

I freak out about scheduling sometimes, yeah, because I cannot help but feel not just guilt but sheer fucking panic at the idea of being bad at it, because when I was a kid, shafting a parent meant the threat (and sometimes, the threat was carried out for at least a few hours) of losing an entire primary caregiver. It’s a literal survival instinct, which is a thing I learned in fucking therapy, after finally explaining what I fucking went through (fun fact: didn’t happen until the therapist I started seeing in 2023).

I hate CT because I cannot be myself there. Because I can’t linedance at the table without being called weird, being told my behavior isn’t normal. I hate CT because it reminds me of every single time I didn’t measure up to my dad’s expectations and paid the price somehow.

And I’ve spent the past 13 years in therapy, and you know what I’ve learned? That shit doesn’t go away, actually. Or maybe it does, but you have to focus on loving yourself first, which I do not know how to do, and only just recently started focusing on, because I spent the first 12 years trying to - dingdingding, you guessed it - do what everyone else wanted me to do, which was to “get over it.”

While we’re on the subject, progress isn’t linear. Yeah, I was doing awesome a few months ago! And then the seasons changed, and I got depressed again, and the depression makes literally everything worse, including my own response to triggers, because I hate myself that much more for having the response in the first place, because - again, you guessed it - that’s what other people told me I shouldn’t be doing.

God, and I’m never going to send this to you, but fuck you for making me write it to begin with. Fuck you for every snide comment, every time you sided with my dad on a situation that he was clearly wrong about. Fuck you for that email, and for telling me I was lying in therapy when I said my dad made me anxious that summer I tried to quit working for him. Fuck you for the fact that I’m too fucking scared to even send this to you, and fuck me even more for listening to you and letting it continue to fuck me up today. And and AND an extra fuck you for the response I know you’d have to this message - the one that’s crafted with the utmost precision, to undermine every single argument, and make it seem like I’m too fucking stupid to see the truth.

Like a month ago I messaged a craft group about accessibility for wheelchairs and the answer I got was “there’s a lot of stairs but we have cute boys who can carry you”. And it’s…not good. Okay so I’m sure this has been done before but I saw a post recently that featured Adrien sprinting away on all fours. And while I think we all know that this is just because Adrien is a funky lil guy who decided to go all out the second he got a cat costume, my brain took it a step further, so I present to you:

This is SO. REAL. I have spent a ton of time in fantasy lands of my own making, with no idea of how to turn it into a story. It was really distressing, because I knew I was really creative, I knew I was good at coming up with ideas, but every time I went to write about a character in that world, I’d get slammed with writer’s block.

And that, my friends, is when I remembered George Lucas. The man who single-handedly created one of the most detailed fictional universes I’ve ever heard of - who (according to most people) is just the worst writer. He’s got a ton of movies about his funky universe and they had to deliberately stop him from trying to write or direct those movies! And he’s incredibly famous! Even though he’s only good at the world-building part!

So when you’re stressed out about not being able to follow through on your dreams of being a famous author, remember that you don’t have to be good at writing characters or dialogue to be creative or have talent or have something that is worth sharing. Remember George Lucas, friends. Remember that you, too, have the capacity to be a professional muse. Go live your dreams.

(Important note : Im only 80% certain about what I wrote about George Lucas, so Star Wars fans please don’t yell at me, but also I’m pretty sure that the world-building and vague story creation is literally a Producer’s job so go be producers maybe?)
