laughing about the idea of ilya over time being able to predict when shane is going to be brainstorming late into the night and then waking him up about something. shane has A Specific Look when this is going to happen, and ilya knows that even fucking him stupid isn't going to save him from being shaken awake at 3 am to have rapid-fire english happen at him.

someone at dinner is talking about the complexities of funeral arrangements and how hard it is to organize everything when already grieving and ilya sees The Look happening on shane's face at his side and is then just

knowing he's going to get woken up at fuck o'clock tonight to talk about the fully-detailed options of cremation versus burial shane is going to run past him.

the only preparation he can do is to wear his wedding ring to bed so when he wakes up he remembers that he loves this man even when he's yanking him out of a rem cycle to take him through a verbal powerpoint.

imagining grace in his first year of teaching kind of automatically introducing himself as dr. ryland grace bc that's what he's used to. and the kids are like O_O dr? and somebody inevitably googles him and finds a video of his final crashout. and because 13 year olds are little menaces, when he inevitably snaps at the class to sit down and do their work at some point (his classroom management skills need time to develop okay) somebody puts on a little pouty face and goes "dr. grace? you don't.....you don't think i'm a.....a staggering waste of carbon......do you?" and grace's life flashes before his eyes.

and next year he's just mr. grace and doesn't tell any kids his first name so it's harder for them to google him (they manage it anyway).

Shane follows Yuna outside and for the first time (of what will later be innumerable times), David is left alone with Ilya Rozanov.

Initially, he's too worried about how the conversation between his wife and his son is going to really think too much about the enormous hockey player opposite him. But after a few moments he realises that it's too quiet.

It's not that he's expecting Rozanov – Ilya – to be as loud and showboaty as he is in interviews, but he's definitely not expecting the man to be intently staring into his glass like it holds all the secrets of the universe, not moving a single muscle. David is sure this isn't just normal meeting-the-parents nerves. It's terror, like Ilya is scared to do or say anything. Like he's scared it'll provoke David or something.

And suddenly Ilya doesn't seem like an enormous hockey player at all – just a scared kid in a situation he didn't plan for or expect anymore than his son did. After all, David has also accidentally outed him.

He regards Ilya for a moment before clearing his throat.

"So, Ilya, what do you like to eat?"

Ilya's head snaps up and his eyes meet David's.

"I'm sorry?" He says it carefully, like he's waiting for it to be a trick question, and David's heart gives a little pang. What has happened to this kid to make him so suspicious and anxious?

"What's your favourite thing to eat?" David asks with a smile, making sure his voice is as calm and gentle as possible. It feels a bit like he's trying to coax a scared and cornered animal out from under a car. "I think you and Shane should stay for dinner. Since I think we'll be seeing more of you from now on, I'd like to know what kind of food you enjoy so that we can make it for you when you visit. So what can I get you? Burgers? Pasta? We have a pizza oven if you'd like a pizza?"

"Pasta," says Ilya, the corners of his mouth turning up in an encouraging way. "If it's like the pasta Shane makes, I think I will really like that."

"Pasta it is then," says David, smile growing at the way Ilya's shoulders settle. He resolves right then to make sure that Ilya will never feel this terrified in his home again. "Want to help me get it started? Beats sitting here worrying about how the conversation outside is going, right?"

"Right," says Ilya with the first real smile he's ever seen from him. And David sees it then – sees the man that Shane must have seen beneath the bravado, beneath the act.

You're home now, Ilya, he thinks to himself as they make their way to the kitchen. Welcome to the family.

after their coming out, #myilya is living his best and simultaneously worst life. everyone is congratulating him, telling him that pulling hollander is a masterclass in finesse. everyone is a 100% understanding and standing behind him in his "decision". the progressive kind of players all say the same thing: everyone is a bit gay for hollander. or better yet: if i could, i would. hes not wrong for locking hollander down.

and ilya is first and foremost happy that everyone loves shane. and secondly, he is jelous that everyone loves shane. he wants to fight them all. he would fight god for him. apparently everyone finds his man hot. oh yay... oh nay.

it even becomes a meme! wags start it by doing a fuck marry kill thingy on tiktok or ig, and at first its the boston wags with "marry ilya 🥰, FUCK HOLLANDER (for taking him from us) 🤬, kill hunter 🥰" but then it escalates to "marry connors 😍, FUCK HOLLANDER (shouting with full chest) 🥵, kill pike 😇"

and after a bunch of wags did this, the players themselves have to do it for their teams social media team. and they are all "i guess fuck hollander... holy shit he has the goods (ass) 🥵" or "yeah, fuck hollander! its unfair that rozanov has took him off the market literally the second he hit it. 🥴 everybody wants a piece of that"

meanwhile #myshane gets messages like "HIM!?" "serously, hIMM?!" "what am i missing?" "give me a chance, i can be so much better than rozanov" "what do you see in him?"

and shane is FUMING. his baby is the most kindest, sweetest and cutest man ever, and he is always so attentive and just genuinely a good person. and ilya is fucking hot. shane has to clench his teeth so hard every times this comes up, and ilya had to confiscate shanes phone when he wanted to post "why are all these clowns messaging me, when i have my prince charming? please get help or delete my number" or some shit like that. he is seconds away from a joker type of crash out.

goshhhh I love that hudson plays show!shane as way more emotionally vulnerable than book!shane. show!shane is always rolling over and showing ilya his soft underbelly (often without even realizing it) and ilya is always like AAA AAAAAAAA YOU CAN’T DO THAT YOU CAN’T LET PEOPLE SEE YOU FEEL and then shane’s big brown eyes start getting all shiny/wet with tears and his bottom lip wobbles a little and ilya is like well now I have to kms. or take care of you forever. AGH

So one afternoon at the cottage, Ilya has been in and out of the lake all day, excited like a kid, splashing around and clowning and fascinated by the wildlife and showing off for Shane. And after they finally head back inside and shower off the lake smell, Shane settles on the couch with a book and Ilya flops down with him, stretched out with his head in Shane's lap and whining until Shane frees a hand to sink into his hair. And it's been such a nice full day and it's all warm dozy sunshine and the lovely earthy nature smell that's everywhere around the cottage and Ilya has his face tucked into Shane's stomach where he can breathe him in, the familiar scent of his detergent and body wash, and Shane's big warm hand is in his hair and Ilya's pleasantly tired and drowsy and so comfortable that he just... drifts off, the kind of wonderfully indulgent nap that he never really gets during the season and finds hard to justify when he's in Russia for the summer.

But this year he's not in Russia, and he slips into this warm syrupy slumber while Shane pets through his hair (incidentally making a disastrous mess of his curls) and reads his book. When Ilya eventually rouses, with a happy grumble of contentment, nuzzling closer into Shane's stomach, he can feels Shane laughing gently at him almost before he hears it.

"Did you sleep well?" Shane asks, and that sounds warm and syrupy too, and Ilya rolls over so he can smile at Shane and revel in the smile he gets in return.

And then Shane says, "Are you hungry? It's almost dinnertime," and Ilya realises he's been lying here, napping and pinning Shane to the couch and wasting both of their time, for hours, and he jackknifes upright so suddenly that Shane startles back.

"Fuck!" Ilya spits out. "I was--fuck, has been so long. Why didn't you wake me up?" already guilty because Shane had wanted to make some pasta thing that he was weirdly excited about and they'd talked about maybe playing more Chel but now the whole day's been napped away and--Ilya sneaks a look---Shane's book is lying closed on the couch, bookmark set neatly aside, so Shane had finished his book and not even been able to get up to go do something else.

And he's just smiling at Ilya, completely unconcerned that Ilya's been idle and asleep and... and... lazy, all afternoon, just glad Ilya had a good nap.

Shane's frowning in mild confusion at him. "Why?" he says, genuinely not seeing the problem. "You were napping, it was nice. I mean, if I'd needed to pee or something I'd have got up but I was fine." He reaches out and smoothes some of Ilya's hair down. "Oh, the pasta. We can do that tomorrow, we have all that salad from lunch and rolls and there's peaches if we want dessert."

Ilya must have responded somehow because Shane beams at him and says, "Cool, I'll go set the table if you want to go wash your face." He smirks and pokes at Ilya's cheek. "Got a little drool there." And then he smacks a kiss on Ilya's head, gets up, and trots over to the kitchen while Ilya just sits there reeling.

Anyway it's really important to me that Shane dismantles all of Ilya's awful self-talk about laziness.

in my dreams unrivaled is about them finally acknowledging and working through processing shanes issues leading up to ottawas first stanley cup win, i want it to start with shane in a Considerably worse place mentally, restricting himself, barely enjoying his husband who he lives with, overworking himself, torn up about not being the captain and getting into fights with ilya about it bc hes stuck on the idea that he cant redeem himself until this team has a cup, i want them to win the cup in the end and for shane to have worked through all if this over the course of the season to the point where he realizes that the thought of losing didnt paraliyze him finally, and was maybe the thing that let them win

Thinking about how Ilya is so miserable in the long game and how being away from Shane is so hard. He finally admitted these feelings he’s had for years. Been afraid that their relationship would end at any moment and without warning. Eventually thinking that since they’re finally together, that fear would disappear, but it only grew more intense. Because hiding a hookup is one thing. Having to hide the love you feel for a single person from everyone around you is completely different. A person everyone thought he hated. He couldn’t even just casually say, “hey, I miss my long distance partner.” Because the idea of his teammates thinking he was referring to some random imaginary woman and not the Shane Hollander angered him even more. And of course he couldn’t bring these problems to Shane, what if he decided it was too much and finally did leave him for someone less risky. Ilya really thought the only option was to be miserable until he didn’t have to be anymore. Just like when he was growing up…
