For those who don’t know: 

Tom Ruegger is the original creator of Animaniacs. He’s the guy you have to thank for the iconic characters Yakko, Wakko, and Dot (for whom the primary inspiration was his own three sons.) Among many others, including the equally popular Pinky and the Brain.  He was also an involved writer/lyricist for the show and played a huge part in coming up with new song & story ideas.

Yet despite all of this, Tom was never asked back for the 2020 reboot. In fact, he wasn’t even aware that a reboot was in production until it was announced to the public. Although Tom has expressed plenty of interest in being involved in the reboot, WB/Hulu has repeatedly turned him away.

Tom’s oldest son, Nate Ruegger (voice of Skippy Squirrel,) has spoken out about this on his twitter: 

“the naked greed on display here to reboot a series without involving any of the original creative team so they can make *more* money, & then joke about it, is gross.” (x)

And he’s absolutely right. Outside of the main voice cast, none of the original team was consulted for the reboot. Tom was/is an integral part of Animaniacs. Without him, the show would never have existed, let alone become a cultural phenomenon. It doesn’t seem right for him to be cut out of the revival of a show that he is largely responsible for bringing to life in the first place.

The mistreatment and blatant disrespect of creators by big-name companies is something I’ve seen way too much of lately, and even though this is far from the first time, that doesn’t make the practice in anyway right or okay.

I’ve seen petitions for this going around, but they rarely gain enough traction, so I’m taking a more direct approach:

I’m asking fans of the series - new & old alike, regardless of your opinion on the reboot itself - to please reblog this. Or, simply spread the hashtag #BringBackTomRuegger somewhere on your social media.

So that we can let the new showrunners know that we, the fans, want to see Tom brought back for future seasons!!!

I’m not asking for a full rewrite, I just want the man who created these characters to have some say in what happens to them, as he should. Please share to show support, if you agree!

Growing up my parents taught me that if you’re too sick to [insert responsibility here] then you’re too sick to [insert something that makes you happy here].

It took me a really long time to unlearn this. When I would get sick or have a “bad day” I would deprive myself of anything that made me happy. Watching movies, eating something I enjoyed, going for a walk, playing video games or just browsing online looking at funny cat videos. I wouldn’t let myself do these things because I was always told that if I’m too sick to go to work, or do homework, or go to school then I must be too sick to play Mortal Kombat or watch Unsolved Mysteries lol.

Whenever I wouldn’t feel good, which I later learned as an adult was due to sleep deprivation caused by my ADHD and depression (and of course the depression itself would cause me to feel like shit), my parents would tell me “if you’re not throwing up, then you’re not sick.” And when I would stay home from school (or even work in my later teen years) my parents would make sure that I didn’t have any “fun.” No TV, no movies, no games, no going outside, no arts and crafts, no books, no nothing. Just lay in bed and feel miserable.

I’m happy to say that I no longer do this to myself. Now when I’m having a bad day or I’m sick (cold, flu or whatever) I allow myself to do the things (within reason lol) that I actually love doing. If I’m not too sick to step outside for a few minutes then I’ll go for a walk. I’ll watch my favorite movies and if it’s a bad day or a cold (something that doesn’t hinder my appetite too much) I’ll eat my favorite foods. I don’t guilt trip myself anymore for having a “sick day.”

Just because you’re sick (whether physically, emotionally or mentally) doesn’t mean that you can’t do things you enjoy. You’re not any less sick because you watch TV. You’re not any less sick because you’re playing video games. 

Actually you SHOULD be doing these things when you’re not feeling good because they make you feel better. The better you feel, the faster your heal.

Originally, tests were showing around 60% of carriers did not show any symptoms, but it is now apparent that even up to 90% of carriers may never even know they’re infected without being tested.

They don’t have anywhere near the amount of resources to test everyone for it, even just the people who are showing symptoms and actively seeking to be tested, let alone asymptomatic carriers who wouldn’t have a reason to believe they’d need to be tested!

This is a disease that by its very nature is impossible to properly track and contain.

Once you had Influenza and survived, you would become immune to it—HOWEVER, with COVID-19, not only is there no evidence that people who have survived become immune to reinfection by it, but there is actually significant evidence to the contrary! Beating COVID-19 may not keep you from getting it again!

And even if you do beat it, COVID-19 leaves you with permanent lung damage and in some cases vascular damage, kidney damage, liver damage, and neurological damage, which may last for decades if not the rest of your life! Which, of course, means that should you get infected with it again, or infected by something similar, your body will have a much lower chance of successfully fighting it!

COVID-19 is not Influenza. It is several times worse than Influenza, and it is people’s failure to understand this that will cause the further impending waves of it to be much more deadly than the second waves of Influenza.

Officials are now saying that they expect COVID-19 to last into 2022, with a theoretical vaccine only being developed and mass produced by 2021, and that’s if things go well. There’s no guarantee that we’ll actually find a vaccine that soon, or be able to produce and distribute it widely enough to completely curb successive waves of it.

And, if course, that’s not accounting for the fact that there are different strains of COVID-19, and a vaccine that works on one may not work on another, just like yearly flu vaccines.

Wearing masks, social distancing, and other sanitary measures are not going to be going away any time soon, nor should they.

As a Historian, I wanna point a few things out with the original post. In 1920, the Flu was on the way out. It began in 1918 (in Kansas no less) and exploded in August 1918 with the second wave. Officially, the last wave was in 1919 although recent research shows a fourth wave in 1920.

The result of the second wave was NOT the result of the easing of restrictions. The deadlier strain of the Spanish Flu was spread by severely ill soldiers being sent to crowded hospitals with more of the same cases, allowing for an easier spread of the virus. Most ill people outside of the military stayed home with the mild cases. Y'all Seriously need to do research. Aside from that, @autumngracy has great points on this post!!

Staying home is a preventative action.

Kids, I live in the middle of China.  And guess what?  It’s on the decline here, because travel was shut the fuck down, and people have been self-quarantining and staying home.  Stay home.  And I’m not saying that because I’m a doomsday fear-monger.

Do you know why self-quarantining works?  Because the incubation period is anywhere from one to two weeks.  You could be a carrier long before you know you have it.  You can leave your home, catch it from another carrier, and go about your life spreading it to others for a solid fourteen days.  And everyone knows that aeroplanes are just flying Petri dishes.  You’re at risk of transmission on a plane, and you’re at risk of transmitting for much longer than most of you may realize.

The virus is travelling at an exponential rate because of this incubation period.  When it reaches where you live, no one will know for two weeks.  People will be passing it around for two weeks.  And then the cases will crop up, and when they do, your healthcare systems will be overwhelmed.  Your neighbours will be treated in hallways and waiting rooms.  There will be limited resources, limited oxygen machines, limited kits.  Doctors and nurses will be pushed to breaking point, and they will exhaust themselves.  And as I’ve seen here, some of them will die as a consequence.  And the elderly and the immunocompromised will be at risk of dying.

But you can help this.  By staying the fuck home like the goddamn CDC says.  Go out only if it’s necessary.  For work, for groceries, for doctor visits.  If your job allows you to work from home, do it.  Travel only in emergencies.  Stay home.  Don’t put yourself or others at risk.

See those flat lines?  Those are Chinese provinces, where the virus could have been exponential, but people were quick to distance themselves and stay home, so it hasn’t been exponential. There haven’t been that many new cases.  And, yeah, it was government-enforced.  It also worked.

So when your CDC advises social distancing because your government can’t constitutionally enforce it? Do it.  Just fucking do it.  Look at the graph.  And do it.

I know it sucks.  But someone else’s right to LIVE is greater than your right to a cheap plane ticket and a weekend away.

We’re going to survive this.  And you increase how many of us will by staying home.

The panic over COVID-19 causing people to hoard shit unnecessarily means I can't find medical supplies (like disinfecting alcohol wipes) without paying an obnoxiously exorbitant amount.

This is a legitimate concern. I work in the Veterinary Medicine field and we are short on many of the items we need to function and save patients lives on a daily basis - exam gloves, surgical masks, etc.

So I have read several people complaining that they can't be expected to know the "unwritten rules" of fandom. So here's what I wish people knew:

Fanfiction is fiction.

Fictional people are not real.

Fictional people do not have rights.

Fictional people cannot be abused.

Reading or writing about something does not mean the desire to do or support it in the real world.

If I find art upsetting/triggering/disgusting/outraging/unpleasant/squicky/distressing/offensive, it is on me not to read it, not the creators and hosts to remove it.

Curate your own experience. The back buttons exist for a reason.

If you don't trust yourself to do that, get someone you trust to do it for you.

Fandom is an adult space. Adults create and own and host fandom spaces. If minors want to participate, then the onus is on them and their parents/guardians/trusted adults to ensure they participate appropriately, not on strange adults to stop being adults.

You often don't know the assault status or mental health status or neurotype or race or nationality or religion or gender or sexuality or age of a creator or consumer, and they do not have to disclose to you to justify their fantasy.

AO3 is not a safe space. It is not intended to be a safe space. Proceed accordingly.

Just because you don't like something or find it offensive doesn't mean it is a "problem" that "has to be dealt with".

Most characters in anime are not white.

There is no onus on you to reblog or share anything.

Everyone makes mistakes in fandom and is less than their best self sometimes.

Persistent pseudonyms encourage long term relationships.

Ship wars are stupid.

Someone else enjoying things does not impact on your own enjoyment of other things.

Don't hassle IP creators.

Most people who are in fandom are hoping to make connections based on a shared passion.

Trying to profit from transformative fanworks puts us all at risk.

No one is obligated to share your head canon or fanon.

Being kind rarely fails to pay off.

It is okay to block and remove people who make your experience unpleasant. You don't have to placate them. (Learn from my mistakes).

Britpicking is a good thing.

You don't have to justify why you like a canon/pairing/trope/kink. Sometimes navel gazing is fun, but you don't have an obligation to explain yourself, especially to strangers. I share the overwhelming desire to refute an unfair accusation, but the people accusing you are rarely doing so in good faith, so you're batting a losing wicket.

I'm not your Mum. (Well, okay, a very few of you can call me Mum or Mom, but if you are one of them you already know who you are ❤️)

If you aren't mature enough to take responsibility for your online experiences, you aren't mature enough to be in fandom spaces.

okay but actually what happened to santama (or sun-tama-tama, which is her name because it’s a pun on santama) was that she was basically sent to train for the position in okayama and they liked her so much they refused to send her back

Sun-tama-tama was considered as a candidate for Tama’s successor, but the Okayama Public Relations representative who had been caring for Sun-tama-tama refused to give the cat up writing, “I will not let go of this child, she will stay in Okayama.” [25]

As of September 2018, Sun-tama-tama is working as the stationmaster in Naka-ku, Okayama and appears occasionally on Tama’s Twitter account.
