Things that sound like America favoured corruption in Fifa for the game against Belgium tonight:
That US player with a red card whose red card got revoked a day before the game. You know, after the Belgian’s team and coach made a gameplan that did not take this player into account.
The Belgian Football Federation filed a complaint with Fifa because of this revoked red card. Fifa is refusing to respond and explain why they revoked the red card
The red card was revoked after a phone call between Fifa boss and president Trump.
In the pre-game slideshow shown to the players before each game, the slide explaining that two yellow cards is an automatic red card and a red card is a ban from the next game has suddenly vanished, as if the rule suddenly stopped existing.
It is so blatently obvious.
But you know what? Fifa and Trump did manage one thing that has never happened before and that is that the entire world (with the exception of the US) is now rooting for us.
Do you know how much you need to fuck up for even the French to be on our side?
(All of this is reported directly by the Belgian Football Federation and the Belgian news, I doubt American newsoutlets are going to share any of this because even the most stupid of Americans could see that this reeks of corruption.)
A few other things that are not lost on me:
“He didn’t do it on purpose” intent does not change outcome. Most players who get red cards do so because of something that was an accident. The fact that it was an accident doesn’t change the outcome.
“What about Ronaldo?” One instance of favouritism before the tournament started, not during the tournament, a day before the game and after a phone call with the Portugese president.
“What about Messi!” I think he should have gotten a red card but he didn’t and that is that. You know what that means? That means that now that his game is over Fifa should not come back on this decission. Which they haven’t. They did with Balogun, though.
Then there’s the irony of Trump defending an American player who is only there because of birthright citizenship. You know, the thing Trump tried to remove from the constitution? It’s almost as if he only wants to do what serves him best, who would have seen that coming?
Then there’s the response from the Democrats, who are happy about this and very gladly point out his birthright citizenship. But I thought they were supposed to be the party of honesty and anti Trump? Yet they are celebrating corruption in football achieved thanks to Trump. So which is it?
All of this aside, we all know Belgium is the better team and the only way we’ll lose is if we have a ref like the France-Paraguay match. In which case it will also be blatently obvious that Fifa/Trump somehow intervened.
This is not sport. This is not what football is.
For a sport y’all claim to not care about, you sure manage to ruin it for the rest of us.
