Nigel Farage is currently in the midst of a big scandal about his finances

He has decided to deal with this by 1) making a show of nobly resigning from parliament and then 2) immediately running in the resulting by-election

He has stated that he is letting 'the people' judge his actions and implied that if he wins that will prove that he has been exonerated in the court of public opinion

His goal was presumably to get a big resounding win over the other parties, proving that The People still love him.

the other parties have thus far decided that this is a 'vanity election' and, well, there is one very easy way to ensure that he will not beat any of them, and that is simply not to play.

and as a result the only person who has so far confirmed they are running against him is Count Binface. no matter the outcome this makes Nigel Farage look like, u know, a fucking clown.

yeah I went to a gay bar recently with my husband tumblr user beemovieerotica, and a VERY confused capital S Southerner straight man in cargo shorts and a trucker hat showed up

apparently he (who through my drunken memory I remember only as Earl) liked some woman, and she told him that he wasn't cultured enough and needed to attend his first drag show (she also flaked on him)

Now I'm reasonably androgynous and was wearing makeup, a short leather skirt, and black heeled boots, but still when this guy came up to me when I was standing off alone and asked "So. Do you come here often?" with a very earnest expression, I thought. Surely not. This guy doesn't think I'm a straight woman does he????

Anyway I start talking with this guy and he has no idea what the fuck is going on but he is just a very kind and earnest dude and asked a lot of questions (while asking if it was alright if he asked those questions). I track down my husband and friends and I'm like y'all. We need to make sure that Earl has a Good Fucking Time tonight.

Man was completely out of his depth. At one point they put on a puppy auction to raise money for Pride, that started with a 6 ft drag queen in all her glory leading a leather pup out on a leash to the tune of that damned RSPCA "in the arms of the angels" song

We look at Earl. Nervous. He squints, laughs, and then goes "I was wondering why people were dressed like that!" He turned to me and asked "So they're like dogs?" And I said yeah pretty much. And he just chuckled and went "Yeah I thought so with the tails! Never seen this before!"

When the first drag king came out, Earl looked at me wide eyed and went "There's a dude version too?!" And I said yeah they're called drag kings. And he said, low, "Drag kings."

During one of the queens performances, he frowned, shook his head and told me, "Your legs are better than hers." in a tone that implied he thought there was some travesty taking place and I should also be getting paid

When he found out I was there with my husband (and that I am not a woman) he profusely apologized and said "I'm so sorry, it's dark in here and I thought you were a hot chick! I wouldn't have said nothing if I knew you had a husband, I'm so sorry about that."

When beemovie invited me to the dance floor with him later and I still had a drink in my hand, Earl said "Oh don't worry about that I can hold your drink, you get on out there and shake your ass with your husband!" Then before we left, Earl bought me drinks for "Putting up with me all night and answering everything. Y'all helped me have a great time tonight."

like. You gotta recognize there's going to people who have never had interacted outside of their of their own community. This includes you. And just because your community is familiar with all the right vocabulary and how to correctly say something, it doesn't mean they're actually going to support you. If someone like Earl shows up, confused and out of their depth but kind and curious and earnest, you gotta have patience and truck through the small things, so when he goes back to his friends and his coworkers and they snicker asking how the drag show was, he can genuinely talk about how included we tried to make him feel and that he had a great time

I would mention that you can make the pocket facing with a small panel of your matching fabric that is visible and the rest in a lighter fabric to reduce bulk. That's a lot of denim layers for comfort.

I start making muffins with kids at age 4 or 5 (I put them in the oven and take them out, and they will often need help cracking eggs until they've had a lot of practice. They will also make a huge mess). Seven year olds, standing on an appropriate child stepstool, should be able to do most of the process of cooking noodles on the stove if an adult is in the kitchen supervising. (An adult should turn on the stove and drain the noodles but the child can stir the noodles under supervision.) They should be fully proficient at basic microwave cooking and reheating if they live in a house that has a microwave.

An eleven year old (assuming no serious disabilities) not being able to use a rice cooker is ridiculous. When I was eleven I was cooking roast dinners for my family because they didn't get home from work until seven, and baking packet mix cakes to share with the farm workers on weekends. The average eleven year old shouldn't be put in charge of the family's cooking but they should be able to do it. They should have the capabilities to cook, just not the regular responsibility. Teach your children basic life skills it's like the main job of a parent after keeping them safe and healthy.

You know how toddlers have that stage where they want to help and mostly just get in the way? And trying to let them "help" can be super annoying and make things take at least twice as long?

You should let them "help." Say you're cooking--at that age they can stir something in a bowl. It will be badly stirred! but they can do it. You can stir it too, to make sure everything gets mixed ... but let them do enough to feel like they've contributed, and thank them for it. You can also do stuff like have them dump ingredients into the bowl--you measure the ingredient, hand it to them, let them dump it in the bowl. If you're doing laundry, they can pull some of it from the dryer into the basked you're using to carry it back to where it needs to go. For the vast majority of household chores, there is some little aspect where even a toddler can do that one small thing. You may have to re-do it afterwards, but they can do at least a little. And every time they do, thank them. Give genuine praise when they've done something well.

If they get bored and wander off, let them; the goal is to encourage them and help their development, not turn them into an employee.

As they grow up, you adapt what you have them do according to their capabilities (and make sure you're supervising anything that might be dangerous until they are definitely old and experienced enough to do it safely). When they are competent and safe to do a chore unsupervised, give at least part of it to them to be a regular chore. This is important for child development and accomplishes a lot of things.

It helps build their self-confidence.

It helps give them a sense of control over their surroundings.

It normalizes participating in the household chores so that it will be part of their routine when they are adults with their own household.

It teaches them how to do things. Having them participate while you're doing chores means that by the time they're old enough to be doing the chore by themselves, they'll know exactly how it should be done.

It strengthens your relationship with them. Doing stuff together helps people feel connected. (At least when the person you're working with values your contribution and makes sure you know.)

It makes chores have positive associations in their head instead of negative ones.

I'm going to leave a comment on this specifically because it was a really big problem for me when I worked in Event Services, and I want smokers of all sorts to fucking understand something.

Not everyone has a good time with marijuana. I personally get extremely nauseous from prolonged exposure to it, and headaches.

I also had to work as Firewatch frequently in live concerts, which were held in an indoor venue much like a warehouse. ANY GA event with a fairly young demographic, and my whole fucking night was calling in substance use alerts to security, who couldn't do much of anything to stamp it out.

Understand that even if you are in a huge indoor venue, the ventilation is NOT good enough with so many other people in there for you to argue that your smoke and smell isn't going to bother anyone. IT BOTHERS EVERYONE. THIS INCLUDES VAPING.

I would be feeling so fucking ill by the time I'd take my half hour, and more often than not these concerts were 8 hour shifts from start to finish, so even when the concert is over and you've gone. that smoke is still fucking hanging around, and so are the symptoms of reactions to it. And Firewatch HAS to be in the building so long as anyone else is.

Fucking MISERABLE shifts, all because you think you need to get your hit while listening to live music in order to enjoy it for some fucking reason. Willing to bet plenty of patrons who paid money to enjoy those bands also had their time ruined by people deciding that smoking/vaping in an enclosed space where they had no way to get away from the smell and smoke was totally fine.

Not even getting into the safety risk part that necessitated having Firewatch wardens on shift for idiot shitheads who think lighting shit up inside is a good idea.

I literally couldn't give a fuck if you like to smoke pot, I am pro legalising it, but I want to rend you limb from limb with my teeth if you ever think its OK to smoke indoors or in ANY space where other people do not have the option of getting away from you, which is MOST communal/crowded spaces.

Don't be an absolute fuckshit. Smoke or vape your crap at home or in your car or off in a side street BEFORE you go to the concert and DO NOT, EVER, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, SMOKE IN A FUCKING MUSIC VENUE. EVEN outdoors. People CANNOT get away from you and you are pissing off and ruining the fun of every asthmatic and every person who has bad reactions to your substance.

Non-smoking spaces exist because many people are immediately negatively affected by the presence of smoke secondhand. Including but not limited asthmatics, people with lung diseases, elderly people, and babies/children.

I don’t care if it’s legal or if weed doesn’t have carcinogens baked into it or you don’t believe in contact highs or whatever, it is not about any of that. “There is smoke here” is enough to be a problem for lots and lots of people! Any smoke!

I am asthmatic and I frequently have to leave events early, both indoor and outdoor, because someone decided to light up or vape in a crowd full of people. And if I can’t get far enough away from the smoke, I end up in the emergency room, with all the related expenses. Even if I do get away fairly quickly, I usually feel like shit for several hours afterward. If you cannot go the entire event without tobacco/marijuana, stay home or choose a non-smoke method like edibles or chewing tobacco or something.

And fyi, just because your vape smells like bubblegum instead of cigarettes doesn’t mean it’s not bad for the people around you.

People are working hard every day to find ways to make sure fewer animals get hit by cars and planes and rockets.

Maker spaces are more common than ever. Solar and wind are more common than ever. Coal plants are shutting down every day.

Unprecedented numbers of acres are being bought back or given back to their rightful stewards, and the world heals because of it. People are working hard every day to learn how to help a forest recover faster.

We are not at zero. We are at decades of effort to heal the world. We've come SO far.

In 1982 there were only 22 California Condors left in the world. In 1992, when the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), with its public and private partners, began reintroducing captive-bred condors to the wild. In 2001 the first wild nesting occurred in Grand Canyon National Park since re-introduction. In 2002 there were only 8 pairs of wild nesting birds population-wide. In 2008, for the first time since the program began, more California condors were flying free in the wild than in captivity. Today there are nearly 500 – more than half of them flying free in Arizona, Utah, California, and Baja Mexico.

When I was born, there were no condors in the wild. I'm 37 now, and there are over 250 condors flying free.

When my mom was born in 1955, there were days when she wasn't allowed to go outside to play, because of the air pollution. When I was born, that never happened anymore.

Believing that things can get better is not blind hope or optimism--it is based on hard data that many things have consistently gotten better over the arc of history.

In addition to all that was mentioned above:

The likelihood of dying in infancy or childhood--or losing a child--has plummeted just in my lifetime. The likelihood of dying in a natural disaster is the lowest in recorded human history. Yes, even with the uptick in natural disaster intensity from climate change!

Humans alive right now are more likely to have access to healthcare, electricity, education, birth control, clean water, and nutritious food than at any other point in human history. There are so many diseases we can treat now that were a death sentence for 90% of human history.

This is not by accident. This is because generations of humans put in work to make life better for their communities.

Some of our solutions had the side effect of creating other problems--better access to electricity that ultimately made people's lives easier and safer led to pollution and climate change, for example--but we are tackling those knock on problems too. Our generation's solutions to our current problems will probably create their own less-bad side effects for the humans after us to deal with.

Is it silly and naive to believe we might actually be able to make things better? Not at all. We have many times before. We are doing it right now.
