Thinking about Bridge 4 at the beginning of TWoK — that complete state of hopelessness in which it was safer to feel numb than to face the pain.

Thinking about Kaladin fighting through his own depression and the way that having a plan of action, even one with such a small chance of success, was enough to let Bridge 4 start to care again.

Thinking about Moash being rejected by Kaladin and Bridge 4 for having (justly, to his mind) killed Elokhar.

Thinking about the internal conflict between Justice (against unjust power structures) and Honor (“protecting even those you hate”) — how can systemic change occur if the ‘honorable’ don’t use violence even against those who have wronged them and are still in a position to do further harm?

Thinking about Moash choosing to (artificially, via Odium) return to that numb state of uncaring, which is not unfamiliar to any of the bridgemen, rather than face the hopelessness of that contradiction.

Thinking about Kaladin freezing in battle, caught between his duty (honor) as a guard and his unwillingness to hurt people whose suffering and resentment he sympathized with (justice).

Thinking about Vyre’s belief that only numbness or death can protect Kaladin from the pain of being stuck between these two conflicting values, just like himself.

Thinking about how, despite this, he can’t quite let go of his own emotions where Kaladin is concerned; how Kaladin is still the only one who might draw him out of this all-consuming emptiness.

Thinking about “mostly unchained.”
