a calorie is the amount of energy released in laboratory conditions to heat water when it’s burned

so in the lab you have an instrument to burn the food and you measure how much of it it takes to heat water a set amount,

this does not in any way reflect how the body works

your body breaks down foods in different ways, for example monosaturated fats break down very slowly but processed sugars break down very fast

so by that logic something that is almost pure carbohydrate would be much worse than something that is almost pure monosaturated fat

not necessarily

oats, for example, are something like 95% fibre, meaning although they are pure sugar the body decides it’s not worth the bother of breaking them down so you get a small fraction of the sugar in the oat

so just going by carbohydrate [aka sugar] content doesn’t work properly either

a stick of butter has WAY more calories than a boiled potato but the stick of butter breaks down over several hours and keeps you satiated longer than that boiled potato that immediately floods your system with sugar, that triggers the response of too much store that for later, which causes a lack in your body which triggers the i’m hungry response

or the peanuts being high protein high fat are the reason why a snickers fills you up longer than a mars bar even though it might have a higher calorie count - because you’re full longer you eat less calories because you don’t go i’m hungry and eat another mars bar

and that’s all assuming that every body processes food the exact same way

tl:dr the human body is a very complicated machine and using a very simple method of measuring energy intake is complete nonsense

I’m a varsity athlete (rugby, so let’s keep in mind i throw myself at other human beings who are often bigger than me) and my BMI is always ‘overweight’ except for the brief period last summer in which i was eating about 1300 calories a day to make myself hot (12/10 would not recommend). right now my butt looks great, and I’m probably in the best shape ive ever been in. muscle weighs more than fat. BMI does not factor in body composition, which is a much better indication f health. also beauty standards at totally unattainable so. I’m 5′2″ and weigh more than most 6ft models because of the amount of muscle mass i carry and sure I’m a little squishy round the edges but I’m healthy. so BMI can kiss my ass

Adding on to all of this up here, hormones play a significant role in fat storage. “Eat less and exercise more” is a fad diet. Losing fat, gaining fat, and maintaining weight has far more to do with hormonal composition in your body than anything. Change your hormonal composition, and your body’s fat distribution is subject to change. This is why dfab people often gain weight when undergoing menopause or after having a hysterectomy (gender confirmation surgeries typically excluded as the subjects are often on testosterone). This is why endocrine disorders are often associated with significant weight loss or weight gain.

Another example of the BMI being bullshit: many professional athletes have very low percentages of body fat while also having a high BMI.

Joe Rogan is considered obese by the BMI, regardless of his low body fat percentage.

He developed this thing in a quest to quantify the perfect human (coincidentally white northern European and relatively slim, by his preference) by the numbers, labeling outliers as deviant - sound familiar? - Clip Studio Paint (not free, but often on sale and cheap even at full price) is better than PS for art and I’m about to cut adobe entirely. Even does some photo editing.

- Paint Tool SAI (again, not free but cheap) old but good, there’s a ton of hacked copies around too. Not hard to get for free.

- Open Tunez for animation.

I’m currently using Affinity Photo and it’s a great Photoshop alternative. One time fee only and it’s not really expensive, plus supports PSD formats. Free trial available too! Davinci Resolve for video editing is amazing as well! :)

The best thing about this story is that Thor really doesn’t try, at all.

Like he puts on the dress, he keeps his mouth shut, but that is where his contributions to keeping up this ruse end.

Loki is the one who has to come up with an explanation for why the blushing bride has just finished off half the banqueting table and washed it down with four full barrels of mead (“Freyja was so excited for the ceremony, she hasn’t eaten in a week!”) and, when the groom takes a peek under the veil, why she’s glaring at him with such clear murder in her eyes (“she’s er… tired. Like super super tired. Hasn’t slept in a week.”).

Thor barely restrains himself from slaughtering everyone in the room until his hammer comes out, and then he grabs it and uses it to slaughter everyone in the room.

Depending on how you read the scene he’s either genuinely unaware of how women are meant to act (or potentially too Masculine to restrain himself) or he’s just so full of contempt for Loki’s plan that he refuses to put in more than the very bare minimum.

Again: that’s not disrespect, that’s journalism. That’s how headlines work. The goal of a headline is NOT to be a substitute for the entire article. It’s to tease the article itself, and generate enough interest and intrigue to get clicks. You only have so much time to capture attention in a headline. If you only have a few seconds and a handful of words to snag someone’s news-scrolling gaze and get across pertinent facts, then you try to make those facts as simple and accessible as possible.

If you started a headline with 4 names no one has ever heard before, most people won’t even read all the way to the pertinent information in the headline, let alone be intrigued enough to click on the article itself. And more people know where Africa is than where Nigeria is. I’m not making a value judgment there, it’s just the truth. It’s a funnel approach: you start by appealing to the broadest or most culturally relevant possible demographic in the headline so people will click on it for more information, and then you start going into detail:

In less than 2 sentences we have names and a location.

I checked another article about the same thing, with a similarly catchy and vague title:

And again: names (and this time even ages and pictures) and a location within the first 2-3 sentences of the article, immediately following an eye-and-attention grabbing, snappy and easy-to-digest headline.

This is a basic journalism thing. They ARE named, and in fact their praises being sung–you just have to be willing to read more than a headline before you start judging the content.
