I honestly think being intersex is WAY more common than a lot of people realize.

Like, not just 1.7%-2% kind of common. I mean like 10-20% kind of common. That's how common I actually think intersexuality is, especially when I hear all these stories about people who just realized they had vulvar hypospadias, since they thought it was perisex-typical. Or all these people who just realized that PCOS and NCAH are intersex, since they thought those were perisex-typical. Or all these people who are starting to accept that their micropenises are intersex traits instead of feeling ashamed about them. And on and on.

got suspicious about weird hormone results. went to gender clinic. yes thats weird probably pcos. referred, for Better Expertise. doctor im referred to immediately says pcos without asking me a single question, just on my labs. i who had read up on intersex resources and wanted to check every possibility, push for a NCAH test. "oh, you dont have that," they say, "your results would have to be crazy high to have that, and besides, its so rare, ive only seen one case in 7 years." hm. methinks this is because you dont test for it. i bug them for a test just in case. (he has not asked me any of the questions to rule out CAH.) they agree to do it. (they did not seem to know what NCAH is, just CAH as when i said it they got confused, and i had to say congenital adrenal hyperplasia for them to recognize what i meant.) my results are late by like a month. (supposed to come in 5 business days.) they never get back to me to follow up. i take my results back to my gender clinic. their eyes go wide. they say to bug that doctor again because they shouldve followed up with me, bc i need these tests redone to confirm, then to get THOROUGHLY tested for NCAH because somethings very obviously up. girl.

i say this to bitch and complain, and also to thank all the seasoned intersex ppl in the community because without online resources i probably wouldnt have known what to follow up with them on, and how to deal with doctors. activism works!

It's a bit difficult for me to show intersex pride because I can't help but feel as though I'm being "TMI" about my genitals. I know that intersex doesn't just refer to that, but can I trust that other people do? I grew up pretty ashamed of my pseudo vagina and honestly I don't want to have somebody confront me about that when I'm just tryna be prideful on pride month.

It can be especially awkward when people don't even know what intersex means and I have to explain. Agh. Thankfully I've only had to explain it's definition before I knew I was intersex so it didn't feel personally awkward. But now...

NCAH (?) culture is trying to get diagnosed, but being told because we have an atypical presentation and symptoms, we "don't qualify" and "can't have CAH." I was also told that CAH and POTS have zero overlap and ambiguous genitalia isn't "normal" for CAH. 🫩🫩🫩

(I'm going insane, y'all. At least I'm supposed to get a referral for an endocrinologist, so that's good? (Still haven't gotten it))

I’ve recently realized that I am intersex. It was a little bit disconcerting to realize that yet another thing is categorically Different about me, but after processing it for a couple days, it really feels like no big deal.

And honestly, I think that is largely because of intersex activists on tumblr (and other platforms, to a lesser extent). I’ve seen plenty of intersex awareness posts over the years. I’ve seen people advocating for intersex inclusion and acceptance. I’ve seen people speaking out against intersexism, medical discrimination, and the ways that the artificial sex binary harms people.

So when I discovered that I am actually intersex, it didn’t completely shatter my view of the world or myself. The biggest realization that I had was that my body is a bit different, and there is a word for those differences. I didn’t think that there was something wrong or broken about me or my body, or that I wasn’t a real woman/man, or that I need to reconsider my whole gender identity or sexuality… because thanks to intersex advocates, I had already done the work of realizing that intersex people are just people who don’t fit neatly into the sex binary. I’d already started to deconstruct the sex binary and work to unlearn intersexist ideas.

Overall the point of this post is to say that online activism and awareness does make a difference. And for what it’s worth, I think that disability activism and general queer activism have also contributed to this! A lot of the same ideas apply here too — you’re not broken, you’re not a failure, you’re just different, and being different is morally neutral.

There needs to be more awareness of NCAH and other similar intersex conditions. Because doctors and GPs are conditioned to looking for PCOS instead (and even then tbh) and likening everything to that. In fact, symptom-wise both ncah and pcos can seem very similar. And they're both intersex conditions, though they have different treatments. But should it really be so hard to get tested for something that occurs a lot more commonly than people would think? Because why did I have to get to almost 21 to work it out myself and push to get tested? Medical negligence at it's finest
