Neurotypicals all need to be reminded that if you made fun of someone in school for being “weird,” you were making fun of autistic people and that’s ableist and wrong. If you don’t educate yourself and change, you’re a bad person.

Things I saw kids get made fun of for:

Walking on their toes

Communicating directly

Not making eye contact

Making too much eye contact

Having special interests

Not having the right interests

Having few friends

Trying to make friends

Being “too” happy

Feeling overwhelmed

Being shy

Not talking much

Talking too much

Having fun being silly

Being serious

Doing well in class (nerd)

Doing poorly in class (stupid)

Any noticeable stims

The way we eat

A lot of other shit

Yeah, those kids were neurodivergent and you were an asshole to them. Do you see all the contradictions in that list? You never actually had a problem with anything we did or didn’t do. You had a problem with our existence. The way we talked, walked, breathed, you bullied us for it.

What’s even more disgusting and insane:

Lots of these kids chose to spend their elective periods with the special ed kids class. Lots of them grew up to be teachers, SpEd teachers, psychologists, etc. not because they want to help autistic people, but because they want to feel superior.

A big fuck you to all of the bullies and jerks that treated us like shit simply for being different from you.

I hope you’ve changed, but I know you probably haven’t. You’re doing the same shit, all that’s changed is you’re getting paid for it now. Go to hell. (A very particular section of hell where you’re marginalized for your neurotype and forced into ABA therapy and treated exactly how you treated us).

As a neurodivergent person, the fucked up thing about getting bullied during your childhood is, that now as an adult, you will feel like your are doing everything wrong whenever you are around other people. And you feel that not only is what you are doing bad and against the rules but that you will also be punished and scolded for everything.

Because that is exactly what happened when you were younger.

I hope whoever I fall in love with will hold and reassure me when I get overstimulated and have a breakdown.

I can't handle another person yelling or ignoring me and then blaming me for it.

I know something is wrong, I don't choose to be like this, yet it seems everyone thinks I've chosen this. I haven't. I hate it. If I could be tested and given a cure, I would take it without a second thought.

I was a “not like other girls” kid when I was younger but not to be a pick-me or whatever i just had undiagnosed audhd and have never felt like i’ve fit in with anyone ever

I hate it when neurotypical people who know that I am neurodivergent expect me to act neurotypical, and get upset when I don't.

I have autism (and suspected SzPD). I fundamentally cannot interact with others in the same way that my neurotypical mother can. I have my own way of interacting with others, and my own way of showing that I'm comfortable with someone. For example: my mother's boyfriend. He lives with us, he only works in the evenings, and I'm home all day, so I see a lot of him. I'm able to be in a room with him, on my own (something I couldn't do when I first met him). I made small-talk with him the other day. I'm comfortable enough to ask him for help with things. I've even held his hand before.

But, according to my mother, everyone's worried that I don't like him, because I don't talk to him as much as my sibling does. Because I don't do this or that or whatever. Because I don't act "normal" around him, I must clearly dislike him, and be uncomfortable around him.

I'm not neurotypical, and I'm not going to act like I am to please someone else.

honestly being neurodivergent sucks. it’s not a super power or a cool thing to have. i’m not saying it’s all bad, but sometimes it’s really shit. i feel like i miss out on so many experiences because it’s too loud, or too bright, or too hot, or i’m overstimulated from something, or i just can’t reign in my emotions. or i do something a neurotypical person does and it gets called weird because i did it. or getting judged for being too into something, or a special interest or hyperfixation being so taxing on you that you can’t do anything else. or when you’re rude to someone and don’t notice it and you lose them. or when you simply just exist and get judged for how you exist. or not noticing a social cue and missing it and getting judged for that. and i’m honestly tired of it.

When a neurodivergent talks to you nonstop about something, it's because it's something they're passionate about or excites them, and they want to include you because you matter to them. Responding negatively (acting disinterested, telling us to shut up, saying we’re being annoying, etc.) tells us we don't matter as much to you as you do to us. And that our interests are dumb, annoying, or unimportant. And that hurts deeply.

Remember, words have power. Wield them judiciously.

Next time a neurodivergent talks your ear off about something, smile and nod along. They’re trying to open their heart to you.
