It was quiet in a way that made your head hurt.
Not peaceful, not calm, just quiet enough for every little thought to start piling up on top of each other until you couldn’t even tell which one came first. You sat there longer than you meant to, staring off at nothing while replaying the same moment over and over again, the same stupid laugh leaving your mouth, the same way you didn’t even think twice about it.
You didn’t think it mattered.
You didn’t think he was even paying attention.
That was your first mistake.
Ryomen Sukuna always noticed things like that. Things that shouldn’t matter. Things that normal people wouldn’t even bother remembering. He noticed the way you looked at people, the way your voice changed depending on who you were talking to, the way your expression softened without you realizing it.
And right now it was about to start a problem you really didn’t feel like dealing with.
You rubbed your temple slowly, letting out a quiet sigh, already feeling the headache creeping in before he even said anything.
“He’s gonna start something…”
You muttered under your breath, more to yourself than anything.
The worst part wasn’t even the argument.
Because he hadn’t said anything earlier. Not when it happened, not when you looked over and caught that look in his eyes for half a second before he looked away like it didn’t matter.
That silence never meant nothing.
It meant he was thinking.
And Sukuna thinking about something that bothered him was never good.
You heard him before you saw him, the sound of his steps slow and deliberate, not loud but heavy enough that you felt them more than heard them. You didn’t turn around right away, mostly because you didn’t feel like dealing with whatever expression he had on his face right now.
“…You seemed comfortable.”
You closed your eyes for a second before letting out a quiet breath, already annoyed at how calm he sounded.
You replied, your tone flat, almost bored, like maybe if you acted like this wasn’t a big deal it would just go away.
Your brows pulled together slightly at that, confusion mixing with irritation as you finally turned your head just enough to glance at him over your shoulder.
That would’ve been easier.
Instead he just stood there, watching you in that way that made your skin feel tight, like he was trying to pick you apart without even touching you.
“Do you do that with everyone?”
The question made you fully turn this time, your arms crossing over your chest without you even thinking about it.
He stepped closer, slow enough to make it obvious, like he wanted you to notice every inch of distance he was closing.
You let out a small laugh, but there wasn’t anything amused about it.
“What does that even mean?”
He didn’t answer right away, just kept moving until he was right in front of you, close enough that you could feel the heat coming off of him, close enough that it was already starting to irritate you.
“It means you don’t look like that when you speak to most people.”
You stared at him for a second, then rolled your eyes, turning your head away slightly as if that alone could dismiss the entire conversation.
A short pause had taken place between the both of you.
Then you looked back at him, brows raised.
“Are you seriously jealous right now?”
His eyes narrowed just slightly, not enough for anyone else to notice, but you did.
You snorted before you could stop yourself.
Not loud, not explosive, just something heavy settling into the space between you, something that made your chest feel tight even though neither of you had raised your voice.
“I don’t like other people looking at what’s mine.”
The words came out low, controlled, like he had already decided this was a fact and not something up for discussion.
Something in you snapped at that, not all at once but enough that you took a step back, putting space between you that he immediately seemed to notice.
You said quickly, your tone sharper now.
He tilted his head slightly upwards, like he didn’t understand what you were talking about, or maybe like he did and just didn’t care.
“You know exactly what I mean.”
You snapped, frustration starting to bleed through in a way you couldn’t really control anymore.
“I’m not something you own, Sukuna.”
He didn’t move nor did he have any sort of reaction.
If anything, he just looked at you like you had said something mildly irritating, nothing more.
“You’ve never complained before.”
“Because you’ve never said it like that before.”
There was a pause, a real one this time, the kind where neither of you spoke but neither of you looked away either.
Then he stepped forward again, closing the distance you just made like it meant absolutely nothing.
Your heart stuttered, not from anything soft, just pure irritation at the way he said it.
You pushed against his chest lightly, stopping him before he could get any closer, your hand pressing just enough to keep him there.
“That doesn’t mean I belong to you.”
Your voice came out sharper than you meant it to, but you didn’t take it back.
That did something to him but you saw it almost as clear as day. It was small, barely there, just a slight pause in the way he looked at you, like something in what you said didn’t sit right with him.
“And if you keep acting like this,” you continued, quieter now but far more serious, “I can choose differently.”
You shouldn’t have said that. You were completely aware of that the second it left your mouth. The air shifted now, something colder settling in, something heavier than before and it was heavier than any argument or lovers quarrel you’ve had with your boyfriend.
“You think that’s how this works?”
His voice didn’t get louder, but it felt heavier, like it pressed down on you just from hearing it.
Before you could react, his hand wrapped around your wrist, firm enough to stop you from moving but not enough to hurt, just enough to remind you exactly who you were talking to.
“You think you can just walk away from me?”
Your breath caught for a second, your chest tightening, not from fear but instead from anger.
You shot back, your voice quieter now but just as sharp.
For a moment neither of you moved. But all of a sudden he then let go, slowly. Like he was thinking about it or like he didn’t want to. And somehow, although you’re not quite sure how, that made everything worse.
You rubbed your wrist absentmindedly, looking away from him now, your shoulders dropping slightly as the fight started to drain out of you, leaving behind nothing but exhaustion.
“I’m not doing this right now.”
You muttered, your voice quieter than before, not as sharp, just tired.
That seemed to catch his attention more than anything else you had said.
You turned, taking a step away, then another.
The plea, or what resembled such wasn’t loud. It wasn’t demanding either. It didn’t sound like an order and that was exactly why you froze. You turned your head slightly, not fully facing him this time.
There was a pause, longer than you expected, long enough that you almost thought he wouldn’t answer.
“So stop acting like you’re halfway out the door.”
You frowned, turning back to face him properly now, confusion mixing with the lingering frustration.
“That’s not what I’m doing.”
“Then what are you doing?”
He asked immediately, like he had been waiting for you to say that.
“I’m reacting to you acting like I’m something you get to keep.”
“And you’re reacting poorly.”
He replied, completely flat.
That made you laugh, an actual laugh this time, even if there was nothing funny about any of this.
You shook your head slightly.
“Yeah, I figured you’d say that.”
You stepped closer to him now, closing the distance yourself this time, your frustration rising again even though you knew you were already too tired for this.
“If you don’t want me to walk away, then stop giving me reasons to.”
That made him pause. Really and genuinely pause.
He didn’t respond right away, didn’t snap back, didn’t argue, just stood there looking at you like he was actually thinking about what you said.
He muttered after a moment.
You blinked, caught off guard.
He clarified, his tone sharpening slightly like he was annoyed you didn’t understand immediately.
“The idea that you could just decide otherwise.”
Something in your chest softened at that, just a little, even though you didn’t want it to.
“I stay because I want to.”
The tension didn’t disappear all at once, but it shifted, something in the air loosening just enough that you could finally breathe properly again.
He moved closer again, but this time it wasn’t sharp or forceful, it was slower, more controlled in a way that felt different from before.
His hand came up to your face, his thumb brushing lightly against your cheek, the touch a lot softer than you expected, almost hesitant in a way that didn’t really match him at all.
You huffed quietly, but leaned into his hand anyway.
“You’re so much worse ‘Kuna, you little hypocrite.”
There was a faint hint of a smirk on his face, small but there.
And then just like that, the fight was over.
“I am not anything near little.”
You sarcastically replied, earning a chuckle from both parties.
Later, you found yourself pressed against him, your head resting against his chest while his arm stayed wrapped around your waist, not tight, not suffocating, just there, like he wasn’t even thinking about it.
The quiet this time felt different. It felt warm.
Your fingers idly played with the fabric of his clothes while his hand traced slow deliberate circles on your spine where his other arm wasn’t laying, back and forth, back and forth, the motion almost enough to make you fall asleep.
You mumbled softly, your eyes half closed.
“You argued with me over a smile.”
“You smiled at someone else.”
You rolled your eyes even though he couldn’t see it.
“God forbid I act like a normal person.”
You tilted your head slightly to look at him.
“…That’s not a compliment.”
“It’s not supposed to be.”
You stared at him for a second before letting out a small laugh, shaking your head slightly as you settled back against him.
“Yeah, that sounds about right.”
There was a short pause, his hand still moving along your arm.
“You’d be boring if you were.”
He didn’t look at you this time, his gaze shifting slightly like he hadn’t meant to say that out loud.
You smiled a little, something soft settling in your chest.
You moved closer anyway, your arm wrapping around him more comfortably as you pressed yourself against him, and he didn’t stop you, didn’t say anything, just adjusted slightly so you fit better against him.
The quiet settled again, but this time it stayed soft, easy, the earlier tension completely gone.
“You’re not allowed to choose differently.”
You groaned, burying your face slightly against him.
You lifted your head just enough to look at him.
You stared at him for a second before sighing, your expression softening again as you rested your head back down.
“But not because you said so.”
And this time, there was no argument after that.
His hand kept moving along your arm, slow and steady, his other arm tightening just slightly around you as if it was instinct, not something he was actively choosing to do.
You shifted a little, getting more comfortable, and he adjusted with you without even thinking about it, pulling you closer like it was the most natural thing in the world.
You smiled faintly against his chest, your eyes finally closing.
There was a pause, his hand stilling for just a second before continuing again.
And this time, the quiet stayed.
