What can we do to avoid Bleeding Texas?

I only just learned that part of the El Paso shooter's manifesto had a section about fearing that Texas could become a "Democratic stronghold," and that this was part of his motivation in the attack. For anyone who remembers American history, I'm getting reminded of Bleeding Kansas in a horrible way.

For those unaware, Bleeding Kansas was a miniature civil war, and started about 6 years before the actual Civil War broke out. It exposed, and helped to normalize, the violent rhetoric sweeping the nation. It started when opposing groups of radicals, hoping to either allow or ban slavery in Kansas, decided that the best way to ensure a majority vote would be to murder the opposition.

To be perfectly clear, this is very bad. Violent rhetoric is already on the rise, and here is confirmation, in no uncertain terms and straight from the killer's lips, that political considerations are driving Americans to murder. I fear that Texas, the state notorious for both providing a large Republican safe area in the federal government and undergoing a political shift to the left, may become a flashpoint for whatever violence comes next.

For context, if Texas has gone against Trump in 2016, then he would not have had enough electoral votes to win the presidency. That is not insignificant.
