Research has shown that pleasure affects nutrient absorption. In a 1970s study of Swedish and Thai women, it was found that when the Thai women were eating their own (preferred) cuisine, they absorbed about 50% more iron from the meal than they did from eating the unfamiliar Swedish food. And the same was true in the reverse for the Swedish women. When both groups were split internally and one group given a paste made from the exact same meal and the other was given the meal itself, those eating the paste absorbed 70% less iron than those eating the food in its normal state.
Pleasure affects our metabolic pathways; it’s a facet of the complex gut-brain connection. If you’re eating foods you don’t like because you think it’s healthy, it’s not actually doing your body much good (it’s also unsustainable, we’re pleasure-seeking creatures). Eat food you enjoy, it’s a win-win.

PLEASURE IS A NECESSARY PART OF HUMAN HEALTH, BOTH PSYCHOLOGICALLY AND PHYSICALLY

The study referenced in the New York Times article I believe is this 1977 study. The information given is accurate, although some limitations should be noted: the study only measured iron absorption, in a specific demographic. Furthermore, whilst absorption may be linked to pleasure, it is limited by the actual nutritional content of the food.

There is no emoji that captures what I mean by :P (I do NOT mean “hur hur goofy-ass face!”) and the one for :^/ is not great. And lest we forget, 🤷🏻♀️ is absolutely inadequate compared to ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

i enjoy that every single human’s reaction to penguin is unrestrained delight
And penguins lack large terrestrial predators, so their reaction to humans tends to be, “HELLO STRANGE GIANT PENGUINS, WHAT ARE YOU DOING? DO YOU HAVE ANY FISH?”
I will reblog this on my deathbed.
Please let him science 🐧
i think at least half of the million reblabs on this are from me
There is an international treaty that says we’re supposed to stay 6m away from penguins, and it’s really difficult because no one told the penguins, and they all desperately want to wander up and say hi.

I love rebloging. It’s the adult equivalent of showing everyone the cool rock I just found.
The Germans really cooked making "Hobbyless behaviour" an insult. It is both devastating, applicable to a wide range of people and behaviours, and doesn't resort to swearing.
Man ranting on the internet about the Superbowl halftime show or complaining that something is "woke"? Hobbyless Behaviour. Girls mocking another girl for not looking right? Hobbyless Behaviour. Mindless vandalism? Hobbyless Behaviour.
It is more powerful than "get a life" or the English "You're Sad" because it gets to the central point of the matter, and that is wonderful. Danke, Deutsch.
you look like the kinda girl who'd open up ms paint back in the day select the spray paint tool and click and hold to watch it slowly turn into a perfect circle
A poll for Firefox users
I use up-to-date Firefox and I have used the AI kill switch
I use up-to-date Firefox and I have turned off some AI features but not all
I use up-to-date Firefox and I have not turned off any AI features
I use up-to-date Firefox and didn't know you could turn off AI features
I use an older version of Firefox with no AI features
I don't use Firefox
For Firefox users who weren't aware of the AI kill switch, type about:preferences#ai into the address bar, and you should see this:
When my firefox updated, it did in fact directly ask me if I wished to activate the kill switch, and it is also reasonably accessible if you just go into settings (you don't have to be familiar with the *about:preferences* shortcut, that is in fact where the gear shift in the standard menu goes & you can click AI in the sidebar). They are, in fact, not trying to hide this option, beyond the fact that they made it an opt-in rather than making AI an opt-out. Please go click it so they know they did the right thing by making sure people could.
The European Union already forced Apple to abandon its proprietary charging port and adopt USB-C across its entire iPhone lineup. It just did something bigger. A new EU mandate requires every smartphone sold in Europe including Apple devices to feature a battery that can be replaced by the user without specialist tools, without voiding a warranty, and without sending the device to a manufacturer approved service center. Batteries must maintain a minimum capacity threshold after a set number of charge cycles and replacement parts must remain available for up to ten years after a model goes on sale.
The consumer electronics industry built its current business model around batteries that degrade, cannot be replaced at home, and create a natural upgrade cycle every two to three years. The EU just legislated that model out of existence in the world's largest regulatory market.
Apple, Samsung, and every other manufacturer now faces a choice between redesigning their devices for the European market or accepting that their current hardware architecture is no longer legally sellable there.
Given that no company walks away from European consumers voluntarily the phones are going to change and once they change for Europe the rest of the world will ask why theirs still do not.
Actually, speaking as an ex-employee of a large cell phone service corporation Stateside who had to know every detail of new phone releases for several years, I kind of doubt we'll even have to ask for these features. When the EU required iPhones sold there to go to USB-C power connections, Apple didn't start manufacturing iPhones with two different connectors; they switched *all* their iPhone manufacturing to USB-C models. It's simply less efficient, more expensive, to run two different factory lines at once.
(Now, they did also come up with a handy way to price-gouge back their next quarter's projected losses on Lightning cables: they stopped including wall charger blocks in the box, which made each box about half as thick and reduced their shipping and packaging costs, and simultaneously switched the still-included charger *cord* to be USB-C on both ends. This forced everyone who had preordered or bought the newest iPhone on launch day to also buy a USB-C wall block to charge their new phone, since their previous phone's included wall block had been USB-A. I would absolutely expect some similar fuckery when the iPhones made to comply with these regulations roll out. Maybe you'll have to buy the battery separately.)

i dont see why i cant start a trend, so here goes. lets try to build back our attention spans. lets try to focus on just one thing for as long as possible. lets not watch those "asmr for people with adhd" videos where they fuck up adhd folks even worse. lets resist the urge to reach for our phones when watching a movie. lets read the articles we reblog, even when theyre boring. i know its hard, i have adhd too, but its worth it. i also know that this hard work doesnt always seem super impressive to other people, so id love for yall to tell me in the tags or replies if youve done something, no matter how small, for your attention span. you deserve to feel like youve taken back some of what social media has ripped from you
