I’m proud of you, Tooru
Oikawa x Female Reader
-Angst to Fluff (I guess?)
A/N: This is my first story, I’m still trying my best to improve.. I just really wanted to make an OIkawa one..
Oikawa Tooru. A name that’s quite well known in the world of high school volleyball in Miyagi Prefecture. In Miyagi Prefecture only. Despite being in a well-known powerhouse school, Aoba Johsai, never have he and his team ever set their foot on the nationals. In his third and last year of high school, he made it his main goal to bring his team to the national court where they could play with various strong teams from different parts of Japan. But before that, he needed to defeat not only the strongest team in the prefecture, Shiratorizawa Academy with the Ushijima Wakatoshi who was ranked among the top three aces in the country leading it, but also his dear underclassman who was deemed as a genius setter, Kageyama Tobio of Karasuno.
Oikawa knew he wasn’t a genius in volleyball. He wholeheartedly believes that if he does not have the talent to equal to those prodigies, he is bound to lose. So other than trying to bring out the 100% of his teammates on every play, he trained himself rigorously to the point of injuries but even so, he persisted in training himself even more. “If I don’t push myself to the limits, I won’t be able to beat Ushiwaka and Tobio-chan.” he told himself for the nth time already. “Rest and slacking off are two different things.” He once told Kageyama. He said that but, even he doesn’t know what rest is and continued to work himself to the bone.
Oikawa is often misunderstood. He messes around a lot, he acts stupid and says dumb things. Known to have a ‘Disgusting personality” amongst both his teammates and opponents mostly due to his smug, flippant attitude. But despite his frivolous behavior and narcissistic font which he puts up to hide his inner demeanor, his insecurities. Underneath the smiles, winks and childish antics is a smart and observant teenager. Oikawa has an ambitious and competitive spirit and he’s clearly strong, feared, and a difficult to handle player, yet his inferiority complex towards those he perceives as a better player than him is like a double-edged sword.
Despite defeating Karasuno in inter-high, he and his team lost badly to Shiratorizawa in the finals. Not wanting his team to continue being disheartened by the loss, he comforted and cheered them up with his usual attitude and of course receiving those funny, mean-ish comments (especially from Iwaizumi) that he never minded seeing as his team is starting to feel better. He motivated them saying that they still have the spring-high so they should train well to defeat both Karasuno and Shiratorizawa. He grinned as he parted ways with his teammates on the ways home but as he finally reached the door to his house, he dropped his smile, and tears started streaming on his cheeks as he tried to hold back his sobs not wanting to go in and greet his family with his dejected and tear-stained face. “Tooru?” He flinched as the familiar feminine voice called out to him. He turned to look at her sniveling with tears still streaming down, red and puffy eyes, and runny nose “Y-Y/N-chan….”
Standing by the flowers that separated their houses is L/N Y/N, Oikawa Tooru’s neighbor, childhood friend, and longtime crush. Already having the feeling of what happened, she signaled him to come closer and held his hands. With a gentle smile, she asked “I made milk bread earlier, do you want some?” Oikawa reluctantly nodded and followed her inside her living room.
“Arigatou Y/N-chan” Oikawa muttered as he proceeded to eat his milk bread. Y/N smiled and sat next to him on the floor.
“You worked hard Tooru.”
“But it wasn’t enough… I still wasn’t able to defeat Ushiwaka. Sooner or later, Tobio-chan will definitely surpass me. I have to practice mo-“
“But you also need rest Tooru.”
“But-“
“Do you think you would be able to defeat them if you get injured and no longer able to play volleyball?
“…..no”
“Then take rests. Eat properly. Don’t overwork.”
“I will if you give me a hug.”
“Eh?”
“Eh?”
“Fine”
Spring tournament. Oikawa’s last chance to bring his high school volleyball team to nationals, his last chance to play on a game together with his long-time best friend, Iwaizumi Hajime. But as Aoba Johsai trained to be better, other teams practiced a lot as well.
Oikawa once again practiced endlessly. To fulfill his goals, he worked hard and often enduring vigorous solo practices after his normal practices with the team. He worked to make his serve deadlier and his sets easier to hit. His neglect towards his health is starting to worry Iwaizumi.
“Oi, Oikawa! If you don’t stop right now, I’m definitely calling Y/N!” Iwaizumi warned.
“Okay! Okay! I’ll stop! Just don’t call her!! Please!”
‘Y/N-chan will surely lecture me for hours about rest if he does… She’s scaryyy’
Other than his goal to step foot on the nationals, he told himself that if he defeats Karasuno and Shiratorizawa, He’ll confess to Y/N.
“But hard work doesn’t guarantee you the win”
….
“We’d better start cleaning up before a teacher comes around.”
“Everyone, Can I talk for a moment?”
“Oh! Whoa! Hold it! Don’t! Just as everything finally settled down. Let’s wrap this up, okay?”
“Shut up!”
“Eh?!”
“THANK YOU FOR THESE LAST 3 YEARS!!!!”
……
“D-dammit… I told you!!”
And just like that, Oikawa and the other third years’ high school volleyball team life is over.
“Y/N-channnn! It was my fault! If only I have received that ball! If only I made better choices! If only-“Oikawa sobbed on Y/N’s shirt as he cried about his loss, regrets, and self blames.
“Don’t blame yourself Tooru! You contributed a lot to the team. It wasn’t your fault, it was no one’s fault. It was a good game. You played extremely well.” Y/N comforted him as she stroked his hair.
“Ne, Tooru…”
“Hm?”
“Have you heard of this saying? “When the world says, ‘Give up’ Hope whispers ‘One more time’” “
“Yeah….”
“One more time Tooru, I have a feeling that someday, you’re going to be a successful volleyball player.”
“Y/N-chan….”
“Ah, gomen. I’m not good at giving advice or comforting-“
“No, Y/N-chan is the best at it!”
“I’m just… proud of you, Tooru”
‘She’s proud…’ Oikawa’s flawed. He’s vulnerable, he has his share of fears and issues. He’s Human. He thought about how from here on out, he’s going to be facing thousands of challenges but if you’re by his side. He felt as if he could overcome any challenges that is thrown at him.
“Tooru, what are you going to do after high school?”
“I’m going to Argentina. I’m continuing my volleyball career there.”
“Oh…. You’ll be far away then.”
“….”
“….”
“Ne, Y/N-chan.”
“Hm?”
“Do you want to go with me to Argentina?”
“Eh?”
“Ah! It’s totally fine if you don’t want to!” ‘I may not give you the future you want and it’s not like we’re lovers, you don’t have any reason to go with me. We’re just friends after all…’
“Sure, I’ll go with you.”
“hUH?! REALLY?! Why?!”
“Wasn’t it you who asked me to?”
“It’s just that, I didn’t expect you to actually say yes.”
“Why not? I can work anywhere as long as I have my laptop and…”
“And?”
“I get to be with you…”
…..
“Y/N….”
“What is it?”
“I love you”
“….”
“….”
“I love you too, Tooru.”

this movie is so fucking creepy jesus fuck
It’s by Tim Burton, what did you honestly expect?
Actually, it’s Henry Selick, who was the director of The Nightmare Before Christmas. The book was written by Neil Gaiman, though, and is far…far….worse.
Sorry, I’m about to geek the hell out.
The movie is captivating, but the book is twenty kinds of terrifying, even now, ten years after I first read it. As disturbing as the movie may have been to some, the things Selick added really serve to cushion just how horrific the story really is.
First of all, the character of Wybie does not exist in the book. Coraline is facing all of this nearly alone, with her only help coming from the sly comments of the cat, a warning from the circus mice, and the stone given to her by her neighbor, presented with no comment but that it “makes the unseen seen.”
Second, the Other Parents are never quite as warm (and, dare I say, normal) as they are in the gifs above. They’re described as having paper-white skin and the Other Mother’s hair is said to move on its own, and her long, red, claw-like nails don’t ease any uncertainty that she is absolutely, positively up to no good. The first time Coraline meets them, they (and the rest of the Others) seem to be playing roles (for whatever reason, Coraline does not seem to pick up on this), like they all know what to say and what to do and are simply waiting for Coraline to make her move in their terrifying play world. This is shown to be partly true when the Other Parents tell her they know she’ll be back soon after she refuses the buttons - this time, to stay.
Third, the Other Mother commits atrocities that really should not have been in a book for anyone not fully grown up. She physically deforms the world around Coraline to slow her progress in their game beyond any mild traps the movie portrays, and, instead of turning the Other Father into the wandering pumpkin-thing seen in the film, she simply ceases to use him and throws his body away in the cellar, leaving him to rot with whatever bit of sentience he has left. She begins to lose her touch, as Coraline gains the upper hand. Her world doesn’t just become a nightmare - it falls apart completely. No creepy but oddly cool bug furniture here, just the house that now appears to be a child’s drawing. Whatever the Other Mother is (a beldame, but something tells me she’s much more ancient and powerful than that), she does not give half a hump about what she has to do to ensnare Coraline. Destroy the supporting characters of her twisted creation? Done. Allow herself to be dismembered to ruin Coraline’s life in the normal world? Not even gonna bat an eyelash.
On a final, personal note, imagine eight year-old me, ignored by my parents, absorbed in the story and identifying with Coraline from the start. Imagine me finishing this bloodcurdling book and immediately thinking of my basement, where there is still a locked door that my grandmother swears up and down is nothing more than a storage room, but has not once in my (or my mother’s) lifetime unlocked.
Can you see why this book still scares me?
Fun fact I learned from seeing neil gaiman speak: when he first wanted the book published, his editor said it was too scary. He suggested she read it to her young daughter, and then decide. So she did, and her daughter wasn’t afraid, and it was published. Years later, Gaiman was sitting next to that daughter at an event and told her this story, and she said “oh I was terrified I just didn’t want to tell my mom”.
Coraline WAS too scary to be published, but exists anyway because a girl lied to her mother.
@neil-gaiman, is this true about the publisher’s daughter?
It was my literary agent, Merrilee Heifetz who read it and said “you can’t seriously expect this to be published as a children’s book.” So I suggested she read it to her daughters. And she called me back a week later and said “They love it and they weren’t scared at all. I’ll take it to Harper Children’s.”
A decade later, at the Opening Night of the Coraline musical, I was sitting next to Morgan, Merilee’s youngest daughter, and told her how her not being scared had made the book happen. And she said “I was terrified. But I needed to find out what happened next. So nobody knew.”
So, yes.
This website can be toxic at times, but the fact that people can just tag Neil Gaiman to get his input, like a sorcerer invoking a benevolent spirit, is definitely a bright spot.
