I’ve looked into getting German citizenship recently but unfortunately my ancestors left the old country around the time when they would’ve had to register at a consulate to keep their German citizenship.

And when I asked my genealogy family members if they ever did that their reaction was basically “No? When the fuck would they have time to do that?”

Mom has German ancestry but I know for a fact they came here early so there's no way I could apply for that.

Dad has Irish but that also goes back so far I couldn't tell you when they immigrated, long ago enough I have like... 5% Shawnee blood. (Not that it matters I'm white as shit.)

Citizenship is different, you can live somewhere and not be a citizen, and you may lack the right to vote or other things if you're not.

In most countries you can get what’s called a visa that allows you to do certain things for a certain amount of time.

A tourist visa lets you stay and do tourist activities for example but not work or go to school. A student visa allows you to stay for school and may or may not allow you to work as well. A work visa is usually for letting people do a certain job and needs to be renewed regularly. A family visa allows spouses, children, and sometimes parents and siblings to come to a country with their family member that lives there legally and work and go to school.

Most countries allow you to apply for permanent residence once you’ve legally lived there for a certain number of years. It can be as low as three years in a place like Canada or as long as ten years in a place like Switzerland. I believe that in Germany it’s eight years but I could be remembering wrong.

Some countries don’t allow any outsiders to become a citizen unless their parents are citizens. Some let you apply as soon as you get permanent residence. Some have long wait times or make you wait for a certain amount of time. Some might even require you to be married to a citizen first.

Some countries only let you get citizenship if you give up your old citizenship, some recognize dual citizenship, and some just pretend like your other citizenship doesn’t exist.

Man the Boomer generation got some great pension plans, let me tell ya. A friend of my moms was a nurse and she became a nurse at 18 and worked for like 45 years at the local hospital. She was the last one around from a pension plan no longer around. From what I understand she got pay matching, stock options if the hospital ever was sold out and a few insurance stock options as well when hospitals were trying their own insurance policies in the 90s.

My teacher/tutor in High School had a pension plan where if you didn't take a sick day it rolled over to 50% of a days pay you could get later on during retirement or retire early while still being paid. He never eve took a sick day off like 30 years. He retired early and was still getting paid full salary for at least I think 7 or maybe more years.

My friend’s dad was a Miami dade fire fighter and they got the “drop program”… pretty much would be losing money if they worked longer than 30 years. So the “drop” was an immediate payout of $300,000 and the annual pension was a certain % of the average of their best 3 earning years. So for him that means $10k/mo are the drop, full medical, dental, etc. It got shut down after it was abused so badly a captain lived at the station for 3 years basically and his average was close to $300k.

When my dad was my age, he worked for a Fortune-500 company. After just shy of ten years there, they had a round of layoffs and he got cut. Instead of paying out his PTO in a lump sum, they just added PTO days to his schedule after his last day, which happened to be enough to extend his tenure past the ten-year mark, granting him a meager monthly pension he still pulls to this day.

Last year I worked for a Fortune-500 company and got caught up in a round of layoffs. My work ended immediately but I was left on the payroll for 90 days pulling my standard paychecks as a gesture of goodwill. This 90 day period carried me over the ten-year mark working for the company. I got nothing for that.

Movie about a depressed and rather morbid autistic man planning to commit suicide and picking up a number of odd jobs in an effort to raise enough money to meticulously plan and prepay for his funeral so his mother doesn’t have to worry about it after he is gone. In the end, he has befriended many of his neighbors and he decides he does not want to die and goes back to school to become a funeral director instead.

He eventually donates his funeral fund to the old lady’s granddaughter after her sudden death so she does not have to sell her grandmother’s prized possessions to pay for her funeral.

The old lady gifts him one of her ceramic cats at the beginning of the film which he reluctantly accepts out of politeness. Near the end of the film, he adopts a friendly cat from the cat colony that looks remarkably like the ceramic cat and names it after her, signaling his commitment to surviving and caring for his cat the way the old woman lived for her ceramic collection.
