but fiction affects and directly impacts reality, and ignoring that is only ever going to end badly. they might be fictional characters, but they have real life equivalents. in real life, underage teenage girls get groomed, abused and emotionally manipulated by old, powerful men all the time. if you ship something with that dynamic, you are essentially endorsing and indulging that dynamic in a community full of underage teenage girls who don't all possess the ability to think critically and recognise this behavior as toxic and abusive.
pedophilia is one of the most common tropes in ya (ie an age gap trope), except it's usually romanticized and played off as "true love". so even if you acknowledge that darklina is unhealthy, by actively and outwardly shipping it you are telling those underage teenage girls (who are already being conditioned by the media they're consuming into seeking out unhealthy + pedophilic relationships) that you find that dynamic desirable.
this is bad enough coming from a minor, because usually it's the result of a lack of critical thinking or an inability to see the darkling's abusive + manipulative actions for what they are due to the "brainwashing" from previous ya lit they've read (ie sjm, divergent, twilight etc). but coming from an adult this shit is fucking despicable for two major reasons:
1) some minors will look up to the adults in their fandom, and therefore by shipping darklina you are setting an example they are likely to follow. even if you know it's an unhealthy ship, they are less likely to pick up on it or they will believe that it's okay to want/like an unhealthy relationship simply because they trust your opinion as an adult.
2) other minors will realise that you are essentially telling them you enjoy the idea of a ship between a pedophile and a minor. the moment that becomes clear, any space that you occupy is no longer a safe space for them. speaking as a minor, it's really fucking creepy and uncomfortable to have grown ass women saying how much they love the idea of a 500 year old man with a girl your age.
i don't care how much you say "it's just fiction" because that's a load of crap. alina's story, genya's story, zoya's story: all of these are the stories of pedophilia, grooming + abuse survivors. trivializing that by saying it's "just fiction" and then actively shipping a girl with her abuser is downright disgusting and if you feel the need to defend it, you're a bad person.
