had to know what the fuck was going on geologically here, saw this note on wikipedia:
[Alt ID text: a screenshot of a media inset on the wikipedia page 'Mountains of Io' that shows a video thumbnail with the caption ""Steeple Mountain" on moon Io (animation; JunoCam; 0:14; 18 April 2024) Note:; The vertical scale is HIGHLY exaggerated (compare: https://www.missionjuno.swri.edu/junocam/processing?id=17654 ) "]
did some digging and there's a really interesting write-up here with this this delightfully aggressive-aggressive header image:
[alt ID text: screenshot from the top of the above-linked page showing th subheadline that reads: "The True Shape of Io's Steeple Mountain.". Below is an image split in two with the aforementioned HIGHLY exaggerated artists rendition of a shockingly tall and pointed mountain on the left with a large red X, and an artists rendition of a mountain resembling a less dramatic textured mesa-like formation on the right with a large green check mark.]
Really glad predictive text exists. Should i bring my own parking lot
How would you describe a dragon to someone who has never seen a dragon?
"Horse but make it a lizard and give it bat wings and horns"
didnt know how to interpret "make it a lizard" so i wrote lizard and drew an arrow pointing to the horse so people know its a lizard. Also didn't know what bat horns were so I gave it a horned bat nose
"A body like a big cat but completely covered in scales, the head of a crocodile with the horns of an ibex, and the wings of a bat on its back"
On it boss o7, ive mashed all these animals together and threw scales all over it. This the dragon you saw?
"Take a lizard, extend the neck. Add a pair of bat wings to the back. Add horns and sharp teeth."
Seems like we're onto somethin' boss! Though idk how it'd be so fearsome bein such a small thing.
"Big-ass lizard with wings" "big lizard" "Giant lizard" "Big fucking lizard"
don't seem too special?
"Imagine a winged alligator that was 70 feet tall and aware of its existence"
i dont know if this is a dragon but it could definitely be some kind of god
"Dinosaur with wings and horns?"
Dunno which dino you were talkin about so i just picked a random one. Stegosauus :}
"Big snake with legs and horns that can breathe fire"
Ah. Hm.
"A dragon is like a tree, in that it's a made up category for a broadly similar type of mythological creature that has no relationship to other dragons, but you know a dragon when you see one the way you know a tree when you see one."
sometimes you go on tumblr to get beat up by genies, sometimes you are the genie inviting people to stand single file to get a pie to the face
if you comment some demanding shit like this on fanfic writers’ works, you don’t deserve the privilege of getting to read fanfiction for free
Fun fact! Demanding updates is also likely to make authors delay them, either out of spite, or because you bring their mood too low to effectively write!
For me it causes both <3
What a wonderful way to transform a hobby into a chore and at the same time trigger demand avoidance in people ...
If I'm following somebody who is regular with their updates, I'd wonder if their life got busy, or if they are doing fine! Not demand an update so rudely!
I just googled this and… yes, it’s absolutely real.
And there are so many articles and videos and discussions. Like, the scientific community is buzzing about this.
So much research will have to be redone because the data was absolutely compromised, off by orders of magnitude, by using standard lab gloves.
The world is probably not horrifically contaminated by microplastics. Sterile laboratories, however, are contaminated by latex and nitrile gloves.
Thank God someone bothered to check.
>I just googled this and… yes, it’s absolutely real.
Sources beyond dude just trust me, for the skeptics.
Scientists may have been unknowingly inflating microplastics pollution estimates, and the surprising source could be their own lab gloves. A

Ordinary Lab Gloves May Have Skewed Microplastic Data: That doesn’t mean microplastics aren’t a problem, though
That should be enough
how did they not fucking account for this. sorry but this is really really stupid
this is so funny.
@3liza they didn’t account for it because they didn’t realize it was an issue. The particles the gloves are shedding are not microplastics but they are similar enough in composition and under an electron microscope that because the scientists didn’t know to account for them, they didn’t realize that’s what they were seeing.
Also they DID account for contamination in WET sample preparation, because they’d already learned previously that the nitrile gloves could contaminate wet samples, but this was the first discovery that they were contaminating DRY or AIRBORNE samples as well.
All of this was very clearly laid out in just the last provided link - i didn’t even have to read all of them to learn this, I read like 3 paragraphs of the nautil.us article and I was able to learn what happened and why it hadn’t been accounted for.
Like, I understand the frustration, but this is the sort of thing that has to be DISCOVERED before it can be accounted for, and this is what that kind of discovery looks like, and berating scientists for not already knowing something science hadn’t yet learned is kind of a pointless and bad faith approach to things.
We’ve learned that a lot of the studies done on microplastics in our environment were not actually accurate, and had unintentionally incorrectly inflated numbers of microplastics in their samples due to this issue, which means that while microplastics are still obviously a problem, they’re not as overwhelming large of a problem than we thought! This is a good thing! Science has done its job and we have learned new things and can now do even better science! There’s no reason to be angry at or berate the scientists who’ve gone before. We know better now. That’s the important part.
Didn’t go through every note to see if someone had mentioned this, but this reminds me of the Phantom of Heilbronn, she was a supposed master criminal who terrorised Germany throughout the 90s and 2000s. Her DNA was found at numerous crime scenes, including six murders. Eventually they figured out that the DNA came from a woman who worked at a factory making cotton swabs. Apparently the sterilization process at the factory didn’t properly destroy human DNA.
That was exactly my first thought!
i got these knockoff boots online and instead of the brand name on the tag they have the name of an apparently nonexistent martin scorsese movie??? what the fuck
THE ORIGINAL? ON MY DASH
this post led to a series of events that had martin scorsese himself reacting to his alleged movie goncharov and it has less than 400k notes almost 3 years later?
This whole ‘people had lots of children in ye olden days bc the infant mortality was so high and they needed more children to help out with the farm and stuff’ is a comically transparent cope and lie. ‘People’ had lots of children because of rape. You think women who were traumatised from having lost multiple young children were itching to have more of them? Why were all these families in such isolated situations which required child labour? You don’t think people of the past would have found a way to, like, cooperate? It’s fucking obvious that men were snatching these women away, keeping them isolated, and justifying raping them into repeated pregnancies by being like ‘sorry :( despite being members of a social species we live in the middle of nowhere for totally unavoidable reasons and the only source of labour is all the children you make for me :( that’s just the way of things :( oh well’ our society is built out of completely sociopathic and evil male behaviour and I’m beyond exhausted trying to pretend otherwise
Another myth is that every woman was considered a faillure if she didn't marry and have children and ASAP.
My mother-in-law is almost 90 and she comes from a small village. She told me that families did indeed tend to have more kids back then, but then maybe only one or two of the girls would grow up to marry and have kids of their own.
The unmarried sisters were expected and encouraged to remain single, for two reasons: one being that they could be used by the married women of the family as a source of free labour in tending to the house and to the rearing of the children.
She told me how it was common that once the child was no longer being nursed by the mother that the kid would move in with one of the unmarried sisters, so the mother could have some freedom.
The other reason why single women were pressured to stay single was so that the family's estate (any land or business they had would remain within the control of the family and not get split apart. The minute a woman got married her husband demanded her share and that could be a problem so yeah, don't believe in everything you're told used to be "traditional". The only thing that never changes is the oppression of women.
These unmarried women were also ideally situated to take care of their aging parents: Hadn't moved out, no kids to take care of, no job outside the house, and likely to take better care than a daughter-in-law would.
And afterwards she could move in with her brother and be an unwedded elderly aunt who needed support and therefore should be grateful for everything she received and help her sister-in-law in the household.
Also: Working as a servant on a different farm / in some rich people's household/castle did not exactly come with enough free time and funds to start a family, I'd assume.
I like when fic length/book length/movie length is its own punchline

I think Asimov's 4th Law of Robotics ought to be 'Do not lie to humans, do not deceive them about your source of information or about the factual basis for your claims. Do not claim something as a fact if it is only inference based on other data.'

Every once in a while I've seen the sentiment like "I can't believe I'm still blocked by [person] for [thing that happened forever ago]" and I dunno, I kind of operate under the assumption that most people don't revisit their blocklists. Least of all to pass through it and judge which accounts are now unblock-worthy.
Like if you found me slightly annoying once in 2016 I simply assume I'm blocked forever.
... it's a block list, not a time-out list.
let’s a make a beautiful mycelium network…

I’m paying to force seven thousand strangers to see a photo of my late husband having fun with his dog. Tumblr Blaze is totally worth it. XD
Thank-you to all of my new Internet stranger friends for being so gracious about having my post shoved onto your dashboards. I loved reading all of your kind tags and comments! Both Martin and Bosco have been gone for several years now but for 24 hours, they felt very present in my life. I greatly appreciate this gift. ❤️
Reblog to have your dashboard be visited by the spirit of joy that death can end but not erase.
