Nichelle Nichols (December 28, 1932 - )
“Uhura never had another name during the series. One of the fan writers wrote “Upenda” - which means “peace” in Swahili, I understand — not officially, but in some of their fan writings. And it sort of took hold. But when they were going to do the official history of Star Trek in a published book, the writer called Gene and asked him was “Uhura” her first name or her last name? Gene said, “Well, Nichelle and I never decided.” We always leaned towards it being her last name because it’s taken from the Swahili “uhuru” which means freedom. So it would sort of be like the same as “Freeman.” So he said, “You can make it her last name.” The writer said, “What about her first name? I’ve come up with one in Swahili. It’s Nyota.” Gene said, “I can’t give you that permission because Nichelle and I named her together, and she has rights to that, so you’ll have to call her and get her permission.” So he gave him my number, and he called me and I laughed and was delighted. He said, “I have a name and it’s Nyota.” I said, “That’s quite beautiful. What does it mean?” He said, “It means ‘star’.” I said, “You can have my permission!” So I have since said that her name is Nyota Upenda Uhura, which would mean a free-floating star: “star of freedom and peace”. I like that.” — NICHELLE NICHOLS
i'm sure this has been pointed out many times but i can't resist doing it again...
this is gilbert baker's pride flag ^^ which debuted in 1978, six weeks before tmp started filming. which could mean nothing :)
chekov's wig pngs because why not.
They're gonna take away my TOS license
i will never be over the fact that during first contact a human offered their hand to a vulcan and the vulcan was just like “wow humans are fucking wild” and took it
Humanity’s first contact with Vulcans was some guy going “I’m down to fuck.”
Vulcans’ first contact with Humans was an emphatic “Sure.”
@sineala
#iiiiiiiiiiiiii mean vulcans had been watching humans for a long time#they knew the significance of a handshake but still#they had to find some fast and loose ambassador#willing to fuckin make out with a human for the sake of not offending them on first contact#lmao#star trek give me the story of this fast and loose vulcan
“sir…these…these humans…they greet each other by…” *glances around before furtively whispering* “by clasping hands…”
*prolonged silence* “oh my…”
“sir…sir how will we make first contact with them? surely we…we cannot refuse this handclasping ritual, they will take it as an insult, but what vulcan would agree to such a distasteful and uncomfortable ritual??”
*several pensive moments later* “contact the vulcan high command and tell them to send us kuvak. i once saw that crazy son of a bitch arm wrestle a klingon, he’ll put his hands on anything”
Elsewhere, w/ kuvak: “….my day has come.”
The vulcan who made first contact with humans is named Solkar guys. Y’all just be makin’ up names for characters that already have names.
Bonus: here’s a screencap of Solkar doing the “my body is ready” pose right before he shakes Zefram Cochrane’s hand:
I swear Vulcans only come in two types and they are “distant xenophobes” or “horny on main for humanity”. Also apparently this guy is Spock’s great-grandfather and frankly that explains everything.
Hey so I looked into this at one point and that handshake literally created a lifelong telepathic bond between the two of them, and basically all of Solkar’s descendants were later obsessed with humans, including freaking SPOCK, so I’m not saying that handshake was so gay and good that it created an intergenerational telepathic bond between Solkar’s descendants and humans, but I’m also not….not….saying that.
actual footage of first contact makeouts
The slow deliberation with which Solkar takes Cockrane’s–I’m sorry, Cochrane’s–hand… The sheer sensuality witch which Solkar infuses an otherwise borderline impersonal social ritual… It clearly shows a very conscious knowledge, on Solkar’s part, of what the significance of the handshake is in Vulcan terms and of how affected he is by it.
That’s why he’s so slow in doing it, and so sensual. A part of Solkar can’t believe this is happening, despite it being a perfectly logical thing to expect from a human, and the rest of him can’t believe how good it is.
I bet that if the camera zoomed in any further we would see the dilation of Solkar’s pupils and a quickly-repressed shiver of delight. Cochrane’s firm, businesslike clasp is probably (in sexual terms) being perceived as a deliciously carnal display of dominance.
No wonder Solkar is all like, “TAKE ME, YOU WILD-MANNERED BARBARIAN WITH ENTICINGLY ROUGH CALLUSES.”
And so we find out that yes, there is such a thing as bottoming in Pon-farr.
Every time this post comes round my dash, it just gets better.
#somehow the idea of vulcans being Horny On Main always gives me the giggles#like literally all they had to do#was be like actually#hand contact is very intimate for our species#and im p sure humanity as a whole would not find that insurmountably weird#there are human cultures that dont shake hands#vulcans are logical enough to think that through on their own#so clearly that vulcan was just down to fuck#down to fuck in a public#professional diplomatic situation no less#and he did not fucking care who knew it (via kittykatthetacodemon)
Some Vulcan: we could probably just explain that handshakes are intimate in our culture
Solkar, rubbing lip gloss on his hand: don’t tell me how to do my job
mccoy doesn't have a chair on the bridge cuz he's the kinda guy who stands behind the couch to watch a whole 45 minute episode of something while insisting he doesn't need to sit down bc he's just checking out one scene. does this make sense
Console buttons from Star Trek: The Original Series (1966-69)
Culturally significant forbidden candy
im no longer warning people about the sixties sfx in tos instead grabbing them by the shoulders and screaming there are aliens made of bubble wrap and latex and so much glitter. most of the episodes are blatantly filmed in southern california or three rotating sets featuring either pink orange or blue rocks. people jump off walls and pirouette when they get "punched". the ship beeps. a lot. too much for realism. spock goes into heat. dont worry about it. the point is there is no BUT. im not going to say "its very silly but its fun" ENOUGH! it's silly AND it's fun!!!!you will learn to love it all because when was the last time you looked at bubble wrap and a back garden and saw another world? remember how much fun it was? do you want to try again?!?!! do you want to play!!!!
My take which I am completely making up to justify TOS being my favourite star trek property is that the sets being very obviously constructed, to me, makes them more believable. Because if I'm watching the show through the lense of "I'm witnessing what are essentially the crew's memories from their strange planets and encounters", it makes sense they wouldn't be perceived or remembered in photographic detail. An alien planet, when seen by a human, would be perceived as and translated into the closest human analogue - and if the rocks there really just look like they're made of spray painted bin bags, then yeah. That'd be pretty alien! I sure wouldn't expect the rocks to look like regular old earth rocks. The fact that everything looks like a set, looks like a human being's best interpretation of a completely alien place, works to the show's strength imo. If you want your show to feel fantastical, far-off, and unbelievable, then I'd argue it has to be, well, a little unbelievable. The more polished sets are technically impressive, but they feel TOO real, TOO logical, TOO well put together. At least for this specific effect I'm describing. I really don't think shows need to be afraid of being theatrical, of being set-like, of being overplayed, because a show is at the end of the day telling you a story. The constant pursuit of realism and sleekness and modernity, to me, detracts from that much needed set dressing sometimes.
some of my favorite star trek ships
i got an ask requesting more spirk yuri and then i lost it?? but i do have more of them for whoever it may concern
Star Trek is crazy you’ll look away for two seconds and then Kirk is suddenly shirtless in a harness and a shock collar
so embarrassing when you finally get around to watching or reading some landmark piece of media well known for having a massive slash fandom and finding yourself completely drawn in by the homoeroticism as well like oh my god has anyone else heard of these kirk and spock guys? sam and frodo? sherlock and watson? anyone else seeing this?
some cuddly spirk to heal the soul
