I hate knowing how to sew. I hate that knowing how to sew compels me to fix my own clothes when their shoddy construction destroys them cuz I don't wanna spend another fuckin thirty dollars to replace it when I have $1 of thread. Mending is the worst and it's 90% of the sewing I do these days.

In the interest of transparency I will for the record state it took less than thirty minutes to patch my work jeans however this is the third time I have done this on these jeans and bitching about mending is the most enjoyable part of mending.

In theory I do recommend learning how to sew at least enough to mend thigh holes because I can usually get another two or three months out of a pair of work jeans before I say fuck this and toss them which is significant considering that half of my job is wearing a safety harness and then crawling into small and awkward spaces. Which is. Notably. Not exactly the kindest work for jeans.

I'll see if I can track down some tutorials after work. The most important things to keep in mind though are 1) sew a border around the hole with a running stitch or a backstitch so that the hole does not get larger after you fix it and 2) do NOT. do not. Use a ladder stitch. "Magic disappearing stitches" only work on non load bearing areas. Thigh fabric is load bearing. If you use a ladder stitch, it WILL pop when you squat or bend over.

Okay @katharkness here are a couple of tutorials and refs.

The first two are the ones that @phoenixyfriend dropped in the replies, thank you so much for that! The second link here is definitely my favorite ref of the bunch, so I'm glad you had it!!

This one is a post with a book rec on visible mending and a youtube video of a guy doing a type of visible mending called sashiko. If you were interested in the white crosses on patches I mentioned in the tags, this would be that. I know my library carries Mending Matters, so you might check and see if it's at yours!

This post is a short visual guide to several common repair techniques. It talks about it in the context of holes in the knees, but they will work just as well for thigh holes (just don't use the ladder stitch). The "patch on the inside of the jeans" technique is what I recommend most, because it's stronger and lasts longer and it's easier for beginners. The "darning" technique is what I personally usually use, because I'm lazy and also because most of my fabric is packed but my thread is not. If you do the patch, you will automatically have a border from sewing the patch to the pants, but if you do the darning, sew a border around the hole first to strengthen the edges and make it less likely that the hole grows.

The next two are a couple references that I dug up.

This post is the DIY clothing repair guide pdf from the university of kentucky. It's been a while since I've read it so I don't remember if there's something immediately useful in it but it's a neat little general resource.

This post is a step by step guide with pictures on how to specifically patch an inner thigh hole. The holes of the pictured jeans are gigantic, so it's a pretty clear tutorial. It is machine based but the steps are basically the same if you hand sew it. I recommend reading the two links from Phoenix first, and then this one, and that should give you a pretty good idea on where to go with your jeans.

Bonus tips:

The fabric you patch with matters, mostly because of stretch. If your jeans are 100% cotton, use a fat quarter or some regular woven cotten to patch. If they are stretch jeans (5-15% nylon or spandex or whatever) go with jersey cotton (like an old t-shirt) or something with the same fabric content cuz that will stretch a bit also. If they're jeggings...idk. Patch with an old pair of leggings, probably? You could also use like, actual jean patches for patching jeans like what they sell at walmart, if you want, but I don't like them and I have one billion fat quarters laying around so. Up to you.

If you don't have an exact match for thread because all you have is like a dollar store sewing kit, use white thread for tan or blue jeans and black thread for black jeans. If you have weird colored jeans and a dollar store sewing kit, use whatever color is closest in the kit. It's on the thighs so no one will likely notice anyway.

Put on an audio that you like when you are sewing. It is best to put on something you already know you like because mending thigh holes can get very annoying when it is not going well and if you are ambivalent toward your audio things are double worse.

Do NOT sew on your bed. If you lose your needle you don't want to lose it on your bed!!! Also have a magnet and a flashlight nearby :) Trust me on this one :)))

If you get some thread on a spool from like walmart or some shit or if you used the thread out of your dollar store sewing kit it will almost certainly be polyester. If you do not want polyester thread, go to the embroidery section of walmart or a craft supply store and you will almost certainly find cotton embroidery thread. Personally I do not find that the type of thread matters.

So after Masaki’s attacked and everything the hollow actually affects her slightly (Not that Isshin notices because he’s never been around humans that mcuh and just shrugs off most things like ‘eh just a human thing’) so not only Ichigo but Yuzu and Karin both have hollow powers and Ichigo’s are a bit more pronounced (And masters hollow powers super quickly and way easier than other powers)

They all have just hollow tendency normally, as well as traits like glowing eyes sharp teeth and nails making growling or hissing noises, good sense of smell and hearing and being rather feral.

Isshin is a bit concerned about Ichigo having such sharp teeth when they come in but figures it may be because of the hollow side of him, when the twins have them he’s like ‘Oh ok just a human thing then…that’s odd… maybe it’s a Quincy thing?’ the growling and hissing and eyes glowing occasionally are also like ‘…wow Quincy’s are actually weird’ (He remembers Masaki doing the same thing…at the time he’d just thought it was pregnancy cravings)

Isshin: Ok kids time for bed

Twins* Feral beast like growls*

Isshin: hey don’t growl at me bedtime

Ryuken is not sure why every time Isshin visits he brings fresh meat and asks if his and Uryu’s glasses reflect his glowing eyes back and if they needed a special prescription?… he just writes it off as Shinigami being fucking weird.

Chad, Orihime and the others just write it off as one of Ichigo’s quirks like yeah he has orange hair, he sees dead people, he has fangs and acts feral at times that’s just Ichigo being Ichigo.

Rukia’s freaked out like clear hollow similarities stand out… but then it’s not just Ichigo but his sisters as well and his dad doesn’t seem concerned…just mentions they take after their mother… Rukia just shrugs it off ok just a weird human thing then.

Urahara doesn’t interact with the twins so he just thinks this is Ichigo’s hollow coming more to the front after the soul chain thing.

The other Shinigami are freaked out but the kid has Shinigami powers… and really they have to deal with Aizen right now after all it’s just one substitute soul reaper and according to Rukia this might just be a human thing…none of them have actually spent enough time in the human world to say for certainty that it’s not.

The vizards are mildly concerned how the kid seems more hollow without a holowfication but then again… Urahara was involved so all bets are off and the kid actually seems to be in control…plus he acts that way normally.

It’s only when the arrancar show up and show same balance of feral and instincts and normalcy as Ichigo and the twins that everyone realizes oh not normal.

The Chinese user community is giving the American tiktok refugees an overwhelmingly warm welcome, meanwhile the American users seem to have collectively agreed that not only will they not let the app be taken over with English and they will provide Mandarin subtitles for everything, they are LEARNING MANDARIN. Ive scrolled through so many videos of Americans offering greetings in Mandarin to try to acclimate to the new environment and be respectful, and speakers of both languages are posting lots of tutorials on language basics and internet slang in Mandarin

My God, there is an AMAZING outpouring of curiosity and delight among everyone to learn about each others cultures and daily lives. People are posting videos of landscapes, cities, towns, and natural areas in USA and China, posting recipes and traditional foods, vlogs of everyday life, and reaching out to find people with similar hobbies.

And it's not just young people! There are loads of videos from middle-aged American guys who have come to post about fishing or motorcycles and are now happily chatting with Chinese users sharing the same interests using Google translate

One American guy who was like. in his 60's had a comment on one of his videos that was like "Red Neck?" and he replied "Yes!" and I just about fucking lost it

Also the Chinese users love, and I mean LOVE, Luigi Mangione. He is apparently broadly adored in China. There is SO much fanart and SO many edits.

There are many threads initiating Chinese users to ask questions of American users about the USA, and vice versa, and everyone on both sides is clearing up a lot of misconceptions. Some of the questions I saw a lot from Chinese users were: "Is it true that American parents kick you out of the house as soon as you turn 18" (not often, but sometimes) "Do you all really wear shoes in bed" (NO!!! Apparently a lot of characters in American sitcoms are shown lying in bed with shoes on which I never noticed before!) and "are there really guns everywhere" (yes).

For the most part Chinese content creators seem just overwhelmed by the sudden influx of hundreds of followers that are super enthusiastic about what they're doing. A lot of them have made posts about how initially they thought the uptick in follower count was some kind of error, or that there was some kind of joke or prank, but then they realized the interest and enthusiasm was genuine and now they're welcoming all the newcomers.

I found several posts by Chinese users saying that this felt like a really profound historical moment, where these previously separated worlds are suddenly smashing together and suddenly there is freedom to learn about each other's cultures and connect. One of them said something along the lines of "This is a 21st century Tower of Babel and even though I'm an atheist I hope God lets this tower stand." OUGH MY HEART.

The app itself works a little bit like a video-based version of Pinterest. It's not really my thing so I probably won't be on there long term but it's been amazing to see what's happening.
