The key to understanding history and geopolitics is to remember: just because one side is bad, doesn't mean the other side is good
Just because an official narrative is suspect doesn’t mean the most popular counter narrative is automatically true
just because something bad happened to a group of people does not mean they themselves cannot do bad things to other people
We report: we see half a dozen sunrises on the train. The sun emerges from behind the clouds, casting an orange glow across the whole sky, then the clouds swallow it back. Minutes later, another place, the shape of the clouds has changed, but it happens again the exact same way.
this is such a source of anger for me in particular because so many restrictive policies are justified as being about "protecting children". oh we'll ban them from social media but we won't ban them from the fucking military. absolutely not they can't be trusted to consent to transition healthcare but yes let's have them in the goddamn army!!
i'm like. i will not believe a SINGLE WORD YOU SAY about protecting children until you listen to what human rights and children's rights campaigners have been saying for decades and stop recruiting children into the fucking army. why do you listen to the people trying to ban them from instagram and not the ones wanting you to raise the military recruitment age to 18, huh?? worried about running out of naive cannon fodder?
it's also just weirdly invisible as a problem! so normal to us that we don't realise it's weird and completely hidden to non-brits! when i lived in ireland i remember talking to irish quakers about it and i was astonished at how many of them, who were active in peace movements and demilitarisation movements, did not even know that their next-door neighbours were recruiting that young. like ???? it makes me feel insane that this is just so hidden away
Fifteen years and seven months, for the non-Brits. That's how old you have to be to start the application process, which is just so timed so that you can then go to Assessment at 15 years and 9 months, so that you can start Army Foundation College bang on your sixteenth birthday. My brother-in-law went that route and now in his 40s it feels really obvious that his whole adult self has been defined by what the military made him into, he's never had a chance to be anything that wasn't first and foremost someone's dog.
taking this out of the replies bc it feels important that people know it:
the standard contract you sign when you join up is 12 years. 12 years' dedicated service in the Armed Forces. if you join up at not-quite-16, you will be legally tied to serve in the Armed Forces until you are twenty-eight years old.
you can get out of that service contract, with difficulty, from four years. you have to have been in active service for at least three years. you may owe them money in lieu of service. this still cannot happen until you are already in your 20s.
a child who is 15 years and 7 months old cannot legally have sex, vote, drink, drive (they can get a provisional licence at 15 years and 9 months but can't sit the driving test until they turn 17), smoke, or buy paracetamol. they will not be able to use social media after spring next year (thanks, kier). they cannot open a bank account or sign any other legal paperwork without a responsible adult cosignatory. they cannot leave school, because they are not viewed as capable of deciding their future responsibly at 15.
except, apparently, if that future is a binding legal contract to serve in the armed forces for nearly as long as they've been alive.
I don't think enough people realise just how insidious the child recruitment in this country is. and while we're making all this handwringing fuss about how we can't let the youth have mobile phones or Twitter or access to adult content in case they're traumatised by it, there's a hell of a loud silence around sending them into a system designed to traumatise the conscience and individuality out of you.
I cannot stand the parodies of modern major general, they're overdone and simply not as good as the original. They've done them about everything, whatever topic, big or small.
And when i notice one of them my eyes will always start to roll.
The diction's always slurry when they rush the complicated words, and adding many fricatives will turn it so cacophonous. The slanted rhymes are silly and they keep just making more and more, please someone stop the parodies of modern major general.
The scanning of the lyrics in the meter is unbearable, they emphazise the syllables in ways that are untenable, in short in matters musical, prosodic and ephemeral, i cannot stand the parodies of modern major general!
Have you guys noticed how much the internet/technology just does not listen to you anymore? I click “don’t show this artist” on Spotify and I get recommended a music video by them on the front page. I click “skip this update” on a pop up every time I open a file organization app and it’s right back there every time. O click unsubscribe on a newsletter and it keeps showing up in my inbox!! I click “delete my account” and the next time I open the website they suggest I “reactivate”.
Power is a funny thing.
Thinking about @specialagentartemis's post again on my lunch break contemplating how pre-existing databases and indexes like Worldcat, Web of Science, Internet Archive, etc. could be leveraged, along with well-established folksonomies like AO3. Anyway imagine you walk into a room of people press-ganged into creating the Database Of Everything and it's indexers from Clarivate, OCLC catalogers, the Librarian of Congress, and an AO3 tag wrangler who got into this situation because they read a lot of Supernatural fanfiction back in the 2010s.

"He wouldn't say that" has a beautiful cousin, and her name is "That's Not What This Story is About".
Oh look, more Miffy heraldry.

this post just cant be on its own. it needs the accompanying pic “when you’re level 80” that is exactly the same image, but the stick has glowing runes on it and the crabs are purple
Ok, I had nothing better to do with my monday night
This gets better every time i see it.
has anyone got the version “when you’re level 1 but bought the cosmetic package” and he’s wearing a santa hat and hitting the crabs with a candy cane
Of course I be-LEAF in dragons*!
*leafy seadragons
[img id] Painterly, cel-shaded art of a long, lithe leafy seadragon. This fish has a seahorse's orange body with white stripes along its sides. It has a very long, extended tail and all of its fins are thin like branches with large, multicolored frongs trailing behind it in the current. The seadragon is nestled within some of its favorite camouflage, seaweed, which is rooted into an isometric 'chunk' of brightly cerulean shore water. [/id]
Finally posting my piece for the @very-sincerely-yours-zine, which I was so proud to be a part of! This roughly A4/letter-size linocut features Holmes and Watson in retirement, from the perspective of Watson writing at his cluttered desk and looking out on Holmes tending his bees in the garden against a hilly South Downs backdrop.
The physical book has sold out, but digital copies of the zine remain available here!
