âYou have me. Until ever last star in the galaxy dies. You have me.â

Noise cancellation
Ukyo missed the modern times immensely, especially earplugs, after the stone wars had ended. He, of course, loved that there was minimal to no bloodshed from the battle, but now that the two kingdoms were united, things had gotten so much louder. To make that fact even worse, theyâd found Ryusui Nanami, a millionaire with no volume control and a seemingly high opinion of himself, and a pretty obvious crush on Ukyo. The archer had absolutely no clue how Ryusui had zeroed in on him, he was nowhere near the social circles the blonde wouldâve run in back in modern times, he purposely tried not to stand out or attract attention, even in the new world, and just did whatever he could to avoid the loud extrovert when heâd been revived, but it was as if Ryusui Nanami had a sixth sense when it came to finding introverts who just wanted to be left alone. While it was kind of sweet to see someone so stuck in puppy-love, it became a hassle for the poor loner. For weeks, the millionaire would seek him out whenever there was a moment of free time, and would flirt to the best of his abilities, flustering and following the archer around until either his butler, Francois, pulled him away, or he had to return to working on the kingdom of scienceâs latest work.     âRyusui,â Ukyo finally sighed while the blonde tried for the umpteenth time that day to flirt with him, âHave you not caught on to the fact that I donât want to date you?â For a moment, that seemed to silence the chatterbox, and the archer watched as he seemed to mentally run through their interactions to fact check him. Then, he nodded,      âYeah, itâs been pretty clear, I guessâŚâ he admitted, running a hand through his hair with a small sigh, âbut, I really like you, and thought that maybe you were just playing hard to get. Though if you really donât have any romantic interest in meâŚuh, maybe we could be friends? And later on I can see if I can worm my way into your affections?â he asked, his brown eyes glittering with honest hope despite the still-flirty edge to his words .      âIiiii guess,â Ukyo relented, âto being friends, not dating you.â he reiterated, and the man nodded, completely accepting the offer. So the smaller male humored the millionaire from time to time, but made very sure that he knew his boundaries, like not to be loud around him, or that he wouldnât participate in activities with large groups very often, and surprisingly, Ryusui respected each boundary set, and would quickly adapt the way he acted in response, which helped them grow closer. Because of that, Ukyo warmed up to him a lot faster than he thought he would, and, despite his reservations, he found Ryu to be quite charming when he wasnât being an abrasive snob or obnoxiously loud.       âCan I ask you something?â He inquired one day during one of their hangouts, while he and the blonde sat beside a quiet river, fishing the afternoon away since they currently had nothing else to do that wouldâve helped speed up the building of the ship. So, there they sat in a comfortable silence, the captain laying back with his hat over his eyes and the archer now watching him while he hummed at his question, âwhy are you so hellbent on getting close to me?â That made him lift his hat to look back at the curious man,          âIs your self esteem that low? I find you attractive, I desire you greatly. While I respect you not wanting to date me just yet, I still want to have a relationship with you in some fashion.â he explained as if it were obvious, which, Ukyo had to admit, it was, but he still wasnât expecting such a blunt, in-depth reply.       ân-not romantically, I meant why do you want to be my friend. We arenât from the same social standing in modern terms, our personalities are opposites, so aside from wanting to convince me to sleep with you, I donât know why youâd want to hang around me â he listed, looking back at the water and hoping his cheeks werenât as bright a pink as he felt they might be, and while Ryusui snorted, he was nice enough not to mention it if they were,                 âYouâre actually pretty fun to be around. Our little hang outs give me a chance to relax. Oh, also, our personalities arenât so opposite that we shouldnât get along. I do tire of being a social butterfly and charming.â he hummed, dropping his hat back onto his face. After that, the introvert was a tad bit flustered for a while, and for a few more days got embarrassed whenever he saw the blonde, remembering the small compliment he gave him. After a month or so of slightly awkward hangouts though, as winter was beginning to settle in around them, the captain began to ask Ukyo to hang out more, especially when snow fell and he got the urge to snowboard or build snowmen with the others, but Ukyo would usually still refuse or hang back from the group activities until the the archer reminded him of his aversion to noisy settings. After that, Ryusui once again listened, calming down on inviting the smaller male out to big social events and just sticking to finding moments when they could just be alone and chat or do something simple. That small act seemed to be the final check point of sorts, and Ukyo was soon confronted with how easily flustered he suddenly was around Ryusui, or how sensitive he seemed to any possible underlying flirtations in the manâs words. He was developing a damned crush in return. It was one thing to be nice and respect his boundaries, but on top of that, Ryusui proved to be a charming, smooth-talking man and the snowy haired man admittedly had a weakness for tall, handsome, respectful men, so the fact that the millionaire was hitting all of his standards was honestly bound to create an attraction. Though, Ukyo hadnât expected to maybe have feelings for the millionaire so reasonably soon after meeting him, it usually took so much longer for him to become infatuated. However, one snowy day when the archer wasnât doing anything particularly important, the extroverted blonde delivered the final nail in the coffin for him falling, at least a little, for him.       âUkyo~â the tall captain sang with a grin as he jogged up with his hands behind his back,       âYes, Ryusui?â the archer asked, a bit suspicious at his chipper tone on such a chilly day,       âIâve got you a surprise! Close your eyes,â he instructed, looking at the male expectantly until he huffed and finally shut his eyes. After that, Ryusui plopped a pair of headphones onto Ukyoâs head, suddenly dropping him into a muffled world that made his eyes pop open to see the blonde beaming at him triumphantly. After a moment of shock, Ukyo pushed the headphones onto his neck so he could talk,       âRyusui? What the heck is this for?â       âWell, you told me you had trouble with loud noises, so I thought Iâd get Kaseki to make you some noise cancelling headphones! I dunno how well they work for you, but they at least muffle everything pretty well, soâŚâ he shrugged, than tensed momentarily when Ukyo suddenly hugged him, before hugging him back and grinning âIâll take that as a thank you,â

They make a great team
how do ao3 fans rationalize the fact that in spite of them consistently making 5x their goal every donation drive, the site is virtually unchanged since its inception and has been in beta for 12 fucking years
ao3 doesnât make money off of ads which are what pay for 90% of other websites. you donât want ads on ao3. ads mean the sponsor gets to dictate what kind of content they want their ads paired with, and who they want to see their ads. this is why youtube, for instance, is so heavily censored, and why facebook can collect so much data on you as a user
their donation drive earnings are pennies compared to what it costs to run other websites with a comparable amount of users. their latest drive is sitting at 220k which is NOTHING when youâre talking about cloud data servers. facebook spends 3.2 billion *in a single quarter* on servers
they also have an entire post with a breakdown of their budget here if youâre curious
ao3 has a very refined search system that has been tweaked and modified over the years. posting and searching for fanfiction back in the fanfiction.net/livejournal days was very much the wild west. you can now easily find a well-tagged fic for any pairing or fandom you want in under five minutes. you donât have to worry that itâs going to get removed because the platform has suddenly decided to ban all adult content.
iâm not an âao3 fanâ because being a fan of a website is weird, but i remember what it was like before. this is better
OP im sure you donât need me to tell you youâre a moron, im sure you get told that all the time
i can think of like five major changes AO3 has made of the top of my head notably
this shit WAS NOT THERE twelve years ago. it wasnât even there five years ago. maybe you didnât notice since this obviously isnât a feature you know how to utilize, but it was an absolute coup for the rest of us
[image id: screenshot of an AO3 works page with the Exclude part of the search bar circled in red]
Even if no major changes had been made to the siteâs architecture (which is not true, as largishcat pointed out) OP has obviously no freaking clue how much effort goes into basic maintenance to keep a large website running and up to date, and also, how much money goes to server costs when you have as much data to store and as much traffic as AO3 does.
Letâs take server costs. In 2020, the AO3 needed some new servers due to increased demand. Those servers cost $132,000. Plus another $77,000 just for hosting. Thatâs over $200,000 just for keeping the archive on the web and accessible. Needing more servers is a regular expense, because a) the archive keeps growing and b) eventually old servers wear out and need to be replaced.
And then letâs look at basic maintenance of the website. See, the thing is, you may have noticed that over time the internet has changed. Websites can do more things than they used to do. Flash stopped being supported. Vulnerabilities were found and holes patched. There is a continual change, not just in the capacity of the servers and physical architecture, but in the underlying program structure. This means that you canât just put up a website and never touch it again. Not if you want it to stay secure and be able to update it so you can add features. In five years, things that were state of the art and solid when you put them in become outdated and insecure and incompatible with current programming languages. If your website is small and/or doesnât change, this doesnât matter. If itâs large and you want the capacity to ever update it ⌠this is a huge deal.
In order for a website to stay current and secure, you have to be constantly replacing old code with new code that is more powerful, stable, and secure. Iâm pretty sure that the AO3 uses Ruby on Rails as its web application framework, and Ruby on Rails has at least minor updates every year. Which means that every single year they have to update the archive and make sure that everything works with the new framework. (This is the sort of boring-but-necessary work that they tend to hire contractors to do, so that the volunteers can focus on things like deciding on how the block/mute functions they are currently developing will work.)
Also, as someone with some experience in non-profit work, regularly exceeding their donation goals is a GOOD thing. For one thing, it allows them to put some money aside for a rainy day. Lots of nonprofits do not have this luxury, which means that when they face a major problem (either a temporary downturn in giving or an emergency of some sort) they collapse and die because they donât have the resources to get themselves through the crisis. So getting enough money that they can have a fund for emergencies is awesome. Second, overshooting your regular fund drives means you donât have to have special fund drives in addition to them. In most charities, when thereâs a big expense, they have to have a special fundraiser. But with AO3, last year when the archive traffic increased dramatically due to lockdown and they needed more servers, they didnât have to do a special donation. They had the money in hand, they could just go out and solve the problem.
Third, a nonprofit having more money than expected mostly means that they can do more things without worrying, and do them more quickly. For another example, if you had been paying attention to AO3â˛s news posts (which you can find here) you would know that they are in the process of planning out a new feature that has been hotly requested: the ability to block and/or mute people. Right now itâs still in the planning stages, and theyâre figuring out exactly what they want that to look like and how it should work in all particulars. But as soon as they get it planned, it will happen fairly quickly, because (thanks to the generosity of AO3â˛s donors) they donât have to rely on volunteers to code this massive and complex feature in their spare time; they can hire a contractor to work full-time on the project and simply get it done. And they didnât need to have a special fundraiser to do it.
