I love how it doesn't matter what expedition it is.
They all turn into excited kids when they meet penguins.
The Penguin: GIANTS! no way! I’m gonna wave at them THEY WAVED BACK! Holy Shit they’re dancing with me! My Wife is never gonna believe this OMG I got to dance with a Giant today so cool.
The Humans: Penguin! No way! I’m gonna wave at it IT WAVED BACK! Holy Shit it’s flapping with me! I got to play with a Penguin today; so cool.
where's the joy and whimsy guy? Have they found this one yet?
@joy-and-whimsy-official
Joy and whimsy detected! This post is joyful and whimsical!
Who am I to deny a penguin some joy and whimsy 🐧
really specific trope i like that i feel like can only be explained in a diagram
My wife pointed out to me the other day that apparently most people were literally only taught how to say Sorry and not how to Apologize or even that they are different things so here.
If all you ever do is step 1, not only did you not apologize, but people will rightfully stop believing you and start getting pissed or hurt.
Well this breached containment.
And I have learned that of you were not grown up enough for the baby version of this infographic, I should have gone absolutely InfantNewborn style on your brainpans.
helen “trans people are perpetuating gender steriotypes” joyce is now upset that the scientific american is writing about how women were hunters too back in the day, not just mothers and caretakers. feminist win!
I think I found the article!
The influential idea that in the past men were hunters and women were not isn’t supported by the available evidence
Read it if you have the time, it's very interesting.
Reading the article I see why TERFs are mad about it; it explicitly makes the distinction between gender as a social entity and sex as a biological category, and defines biological sex having multiple factors, both of which are anathema to TERF philosophy.
It also includes these fascinating paragraphs about the role of estrogen in different types of physical activity, directly debunking the widespread notion that estrogen is the weak human's hormone and only does weak human things:
Given the fitness world's persistent touting of the hormone testosterone for athletic success, you'd be forgiven for not knowing that estrogen, which females typically produce more of than males, plays an incredibly important role in athletic performance… The estrogen receptor—the protein that estrogen binds to in order to do its work—is deeply ancient. Joseph Thornton of the University of Chicago and his colleagues have estimated that it is around 1.2 billion to 600 million years old—roughly twice as old as the testosterone receptor. In addition to helping regulate the reproductive system, estrogen influences fine-motor control and memory, enhances the growth and development of neurons, and helps to prevent hardening of the arteries. Important for the purposes of this discussion, estrogen also improves fat metabolism. During exercise, estrogen seems to encourage the body to use stored fat for energy before stored carbohydrates. Fat contains more calories per gram than carbohydrates do, so it burns more slowly, which can delay fatigue during endurance activity. Not only does estrogen encourage fat burning, but it also promotes greater fat storage within muscles… which makes that fat's energy more readily available. Adiponectin, another hormone that is typically present in higher amounts in females than in males, further enhances fat metabolism while sparing carbohydrates for future use, and it protects muscle from breakdown. Anne Friedlander of Stanford University and her colleagues found that females use as much as 70 percent more fat for energy during exercise than males. Estrogen's ability to increase fat metabolism and regulate the body's response to the hormone insulin can help prevent muscle breakdown during intense exercise. Furthermore, estrogen appears to have a stabilizing effect on cell membranes that might otherwise rupture from acute stress brought on by heat and exercise. Ruptured cells release enzymes called creatine kinases, which can damage tissues… Linda Lamont of the University of Rhode Island and her colleagues, as well as Michael Riddell of York University in Canada and his colleagues, found that females experienced less muscle breakdown than males after the same bouts of exercise. Tellingly, in a separate study, Mazen J. Hamadeh of York University and his colleagues found that males supplemented with estrogen suffered less muscle breakdown during cycling than those who didn't receive estrogen supplements.
The article also talks about sexual dimorphism in different species, concluding that "Modern humans have low sexual dimorphism compared with the other great apes," and that overemphasis on averages obscures the wide dispersal of individual traits, which is what I keep saying.
Anthropologists also look at damage on our ancestors' skeletons for clues to their behavior. Neandertals are the best-studied extinct members of the human family because we have a rich fossil record of their remains. Neandertal females and males do not differ in their trauma patterns, nor do they exhibit sex differences in pathology from repetitive actions. Their skeletons show the same patterns of wear and tear. This finding suggests that they were doing the same things, from ambush-hunting large game animals to processing hides for leather. Yes, Neandertal women were spearing woolly rhinoceroses, and Neandertal men were making clothing.
I also thought this part was cool :)
I don’t think we’re rick rolling each other enough anymore. 1. it CANNOT die out 2. this under saturated market is perfect for unsuspecting victims who’ve been lulled into a false sense of security. be the person you hate. bring back the dastardly link
someone actually studied the falling Rick Roll rate for their Ph.D dissertation recently and published the paper
okay but this made me wonder if there was actually any academic literature on rickrolling and YES THERE IS this is a paper about rickrolling WITHIN academic literature. As in, studies that attempt to rickroll the people reading them. Best part is no one is going to believe me and click that link even though it’s 100% true.
My friend's book is mentioned in this paper!!
There is no earthy way of convincing anyone that the rickroll study link is real. But for what it's worth. It is
I have a new goal in my almost-finished PhD dissertation.
Second link's good guys, truly
Teaboot's right, there is basically nothing on earth that could convince me to click the second link. I genuinely believe it might be real, but i'm not touching it.
His uncle sure wasn’t!
That man was barely fucking hanging on, he was literally disintegrating. He was also rumored to have prostate cancer at the end of his life.
I’m disabled too, chronically ill like JFK. I have an autoimmune disease, JFK showed signs of one. He was a frail house of cards of a man who survived on a mix of uppers, downers and steroids. I also need similar medication to survive. It is so fucking disgusting to see RFK jr. rewrite history and attack modern medicine when his own family has a loooooong history of severe physical and mental illness.
It’s worth noting many of JFK’s health issues started after he developed scarlet fever, a common childhood illness that often left victims with damage to their kidneys, heart, joints and brain and sometimes triggered arthritis. There is no vaccine against it but RFK jr is trying to undermine the vaccination schedules for other common childhood illnesses that can cause permanent lifelong damage to a child’s health.
“I don’t understand. How does this refute what RFK jr. said?” Because many of JFK’s ailments may have been preventable/treatable with modern medicine. Because he needed amphetamines to function. Because the average life expectancy for men in 1960 was 66.6. People lived harder lives and died younger. Public health campaigns and infectious disease control and education helped immensely. People were not healthier during his uncle’s presidency because they did not have the tools and knowledge necessary to address many major public health concerns, we have them now and he is firing vaccine experts and literally swimming in shit creek. The average state of health in the 1960s was not better than it is today.
Many do not know about the state of JFK’s health because it was taboo. Because disability and ill health were things that were spoken of in hushed whispers. The Kennedys buried JFK’s health problems like they hid Rosemary after she was lobotomized. RFK jr wants to continue his rose-tinted view of a past constructed through blood and pain and ignorance. He is rewriting history in a way that is so obvious and so vile.

How did you get hacked?
I tried to pirate a game and did so wrong.
The thing about hackers, scammers, fraudsters-- is that they cast a very wide net knowing they'll get a few suckers caught in it. Let's say 10,000 people get an email saying "YOÜVE W0N!🤩 CLiCK N⁰W!?!" 9,997 of them delete it. For the three people who get sucked in, it's life ruining.
They rely on the fact that, at some point, they are going to get you while you're not thinking clearly. Maybe you're sick. Or tired. Or work is stressful. Or you just had a fight with someone and you're mad. Your kid is going through something, your dog is at the vet, your car broke down, you got fired. Or you're in the middle of planning a big event, or you're so super excited for a convention-- and something comes across your desk. Maybe it's an email, or a phone call, a link, a text, a file. But for whatever reason you're not thinking 100% clearly and you don't question it, you trust for a minute and that's all that they need. You are now one of those three caught in the net.
And now you're actually on their list of suckers! They will return to you over and over and over and over again for more, because hey! You fell for it once. They're counting on that your grandma who answered a scam call and provided her credit card number once WILL be scammable again. Maybe not right away, maybe not the same way, but they'll get her. (And more often than not, they're right.)
I think most people are inclined to want to trust one another. Or sometimes we're curious. Or we think, "Wow, I didn't know it would be this easy!" not stopping to ask WHY it's so easy to get something good for free.
I work at a financial institution and I help people all the time who have been hacked and lost hundreds or thousands or hundreds of thousands of dollars. They are always terrified- will I get my money back? Am I safe?- but they are also consistently ashamed and embarrassed. They feel guilty for having trusted and for not having stopped to think for a second longer. They verbally berate themselves. "I'm so stupid. How could I have fallen for it?"
Currently I'm only out about $300, which I'm being told I'll get back. That number could go up-- I'm still working on securing everything. Do you know how many passwords I had stored in my browser? 192. I have no idea how many of those had a valid card attached, but so far one account was plenty to steal a couple hundred bucks from me. And I do feel stupid, and embarrassed, ashamed, humiliated. Scared. The hacker messaged everyone I had recently messaged on discord as well as every channel in every server to @/everyone with instructions to download their Spyware. Every single person I talk to knows I fell for something dumb.
It's embarrassing, it's upsetting, and I dont even know the full scope of what more is going to happen. I had tax documents on my computer-- how much of my identity is now in their hands? I've locked my credit and placed fraud alerts everywhere, but how safe am I? Who else is at risk now because of me? What other files do they have from me?
In this case, I happen to know that a number of people did what I did. I've seen a number of threads from others who ALSO tried to download tomodachi life from github. (For the record, this was not the floralith link.) I was excited, I was in a hurry. I thought, "this is so quick and easy and now I can play!" I didnt question why in the hell it would EVER be so easy. I haven't had a virus on my computer since I was a young teen, and then I went and installed a bunch of Trojans whilst going "la la la." Incredibly stupid stuff.
But that's the thing, these people are constantly TRYING to catch someone, anyone, YOU, and they count on that eventually, EVENTUALLY, someday they'll dangle just the right bait for you to latch on to. And in my case it was a fishy video game download.
it is INCREDIBLY easy to get scammed. no matter how safe or smart you think you are. you are more likely to get scammed than not.
i almost did this exact same thing in january of this year. i'd just applied for SSA disability and a day or two after i got an legitimate looking email saying they needed additional documents. i check my email first thing in the morning so i was physically tired and stressed in every way possible and in pain from still being post-surgical and i was scared of screwing up this process.
i downloaded the attached file. the only thing that saved me was my computer asking if i was sure i wanted to run this program.
what program? i thought this was a pdf?
no. turns out the icon was a pdf but the file type was something i wasn't familiar with.
i went back to the email and sure enough the sender was some stupid gibberish.
i dodged a bullet by an unspeakably slim margin. it terrifies me how legit the email had looked, it was properly formatted with correct spelling and grammar and had all the right logos and headers and it went to my focused inbox. this was not designed to filter people out. it terrifies me how they even knew i'd just applied and to try this.
i've had friends who've lost thousands to scams that got them at the wrong time.
it doesn't matter who you are, how protected you feel, how many defenses you've got in place, how locked down your shit seems, they will get you. it may not ruin your life, but in some way to some degree you will get got.
You (and I) are not immune to social engineering.
It's annoying to me to see people dismiss the hopes and subsequent disappointments over a fat or chubby Harris. I see a lot of people say that Harris was never described as fat, sure – but he is described as "pudgy, unathletic, stocky." Which blatantly indicates a chubby, not-skinny body type. Being chubby is not that different to being fat, sometimes they are used synonymously – fatness is a spectrum. He has moments where he is insecure about his body type in comparison to Troy and all of the hockey players. He is the only character in the Game Changers universe, as far as im aware (correct me if I'm wrong), who is descibed to be chubby. He's also physically disabled, which stops him from engaging in strenuous exercise. He is supposed to be a regular, unathletic person who does not fit conventional beauty standards.
Fat/chubby gay men are a big part of the community and gay culture, see: bears. And Harris is honestly portrayed to be closer to a bear than anything else. Do you know how incredible it would have been, for a show like Heated Rivalry, to have a chubby/fat disabled gay man as a main love interest and shown to be [sexually] desirable? There is no real reason they could not have depicted that, because that is what the book shows. I've seen people go, "what did you expect from Heated Rivalry?" Well, it's the book canon! And the people who work on this show give the impression they care about representation. The idea you should for some reason Expect them to not cast chubby actors for chubby roles, is a problem – it's fatphobia. It's cowardly. And even if he is "chubby, not fat" there would be nothing stopping them from casting a fat actor, either! Representation matters! Justice Smith, bless his soul (the criticism lies with the casting crew, not at all him! I'm happy for him and have faith he will act incredibly as Harris!), is not even close to chubby.
It's amazing that they cast a black man and diversified these painfully white couples. But, they could've cast a chubby black man. It's not mutually exclusive, they don't cancel each other out.
I'm sorry, but they have kinda erased a marginalised, under-represented aspect of a character. They made a conscious decision to erase it, knowing people would be disappointed. And it's an unfair position for Justice to be in – he will probably already get harassment from racists for being a black man playing a guy who was white and blonde in the book, but now there's other reasons people are unhappy about his casting. I feel bad for him!
We are living in a crazy ED and ozempic culture right now. The majority of media only ever depicts/prioritizes (unnaturally) skinny people. Fat characters are so often erased and dismissed. Fat/chubby characters as the love interests? It's not common. Fat/chubby people deserve, NEED this representation. It's important. You should care about fat/chubby people getting more representation, please.
So, I think it absolutely fair for people to mourn the chance of a queer love story showing a chubby/fat man as loved and desirable. Especially in these current times, and especially because the core of Heated Rivalry/Game Changers is love and acceptance.
op disabled reblogs but I think the point still stands
My woke take, as someone who has worked in both a public library and a school library, is that we desperately need both more books that are at a higher reading level but a less mature subject matter, and more books that are at a lower reading level but a more mature subject matter, because 8 year olds who are advanced readers are still 8 year olds and don't want to read about graphic violence and torture, and teens and adults who have learning difficulties or who are just later readers for whatever reason are still teens and adults and don't want to read about Billy the Bunny going to school or whatever the hell.
Shoutout to people in the notes also mentioning people learning the language, I should've mentioned that really, given that I've been stuck reading German picture books myself while learning German.
good news, by the way! i’ve nearly finished chapter 4 of runs out of lovers 🙂 the bad news is, of course, that i still have to write chapter 3
actually i'm going to use this post to talk about something that i've been thinking about a lot (for obvious reasons) which is gen AI in fanfic spaces! when i mentioned the above to a friend of mine (who i adore, but is in very different fandom spaces than this one) she suggested that i could cut the work down for myself and upload chapters 2 & 4 to chatgpt and ask it to create a chapter 3 that would tie everything together. "don't worry!" she said. "you can even give it plot beats to hit and dialogue to use to make sure it all goes quickly."
this was, as you can probably guess, an outrageous suggestion to me that i took a lot of offense to, but she had no idea why, and that really got me thinking about the two different fandom mindsets at play here and how they each work and i want to talk my way through it here and it's my blog so you can't stop me.
let's put aside the other arguments against generative AI like the environmental impact or the plagiarist way LLMs are trained (not because those aren't important or relevant! they very much are! they are a huge reason why generative AI is bad! they're just not the thing i want to talk about right now) and look at why i think my friend and i had such differing opinions on the topic: fandom as a creative space vs. fandom as a consumerist space.
from a consumerist lens, her suggestion makes perfect sense, right? if fandom is a place you go to consume content, a tool that makes finished content for you to consume quickly and with minimal effort is kind of a no-brainer, right? the disconnect we had is that, well, content and consumption are not the point of fandom for me, because for me, this is a creative space. my goal isn't to have as much finished work as possible available for others to read. my goal is to create something! that's the fun part for me! coming up with an idea and figuring out how to execute it and getting to play with imagery and wordcraft and themes is the whole point. why would i outsource that?
it makes me think about that famous clip of professional chef jamie oliver showing a group of young kids how fast food style chicken nuggets are made. he presents them with a basically nutritionless pink slurry that eventually gets breaded and deep-fried into the nuggets they know and love, and he asks them "how many of you still want to eat these?" and then every single child raises their hand while jamie oliver stares at them despondently.
now, i'm not a chef or a foodie, so the delicious chicken nuggets i definitely still eat are not really the point here. the point is: kids are not chefs and they do not care how the nuggets are made. you can show them the ugly process and it really doesn't change anything about their experience of the nugget, because they only consume it, they don't create it.
i think the fandom divide is kind of functioning in this same way. i don't know how to make the kids care about where the nuggets come from.
you could say maybe it boils down to readers vs. writers but there's always been more people who read fanwork than who write it. there's also, obviously, people who have been writers for much longer than generative AI has been around who have decided the content is more important than the process. if you've decided your goal is to have as many words posted to your ao3 as quickly as possible with as many hits and kudos as you can get, then, yeah, gen AI seems like a pretty easy way to achieve that.
i think fandoms at large need to figure out why that's become a goal for so many people. what are we (big we, like, societal we, media landscape we) doing that's encouraged this? what can we (small we, individual spaces, communities) do instead to make the process valuable to people, including the people who have no part in the process? i don't have the answer. it's easy to sit on the anti-AI hill and say that it's bad, as in both immoral AND low-quality, but saying that does nothing to make people not want chicken nuggets, whether you're making them or eating them.
i don't know! if they made an AI model that somehow trained itself entirely on its own and had zero environmental impact, i still wouldn't use it to create fanwork. i know most of you feel the same way. conversations focusing on how the nuggets are made seem sort of counter-productive in that respect. how do we teach people that cooking for yourself is the point? how do we present the skills as desirable beyond what they can provide for you at the end of the process?
i want to make something out of nothing, not to have something at the end, but to know that i made it. making it is the whole point. i wish more people felt the same.
the thing is I am pro-rpf on principle, but I do think you should keep it away from the actual people you're shipping. but it is NOT out of concern for their comfort (insert pete wentz bank account post), it's for the same reason that like animal behaviorists and field biologists and such try to stay out of view when they're observing animals in the wild. don't tip them off it's gonna to skew the results of my study.
actually need a role model episode in s2 solely so we can have this interaction
like its fully giving
GETTING THIS ON OUR SCREENS NEXT YEAR EVERYBODY SAY YAYYYY
The difference between "There used to be hot summers too,” and a climate crisis.
Look, we all know this is true. But there isn't a SOURCE for this, and the graph itself is basically illegible beyond "ooh colors". If we want to be good stewards of our informational resources, we need to cite our sources.
From a reverse image search, I found the website Show Your Stripes, run by the University of Reading in the UK, which is likely where the above graph originated. It provides temperature data for various regions of the world from approximately 1900-2025. For example, here are graphs for Canada, India, and Papua New Guinea:
All clearly show a sharp rise in temperature beginning around approximately the 1980s, which corresponds with the graph in OP's post. But now we know where this data came from, and we can verify its validity accordingly.
