@queueniverse
just saw this diagram in a resiliency training... i may need to rethink some things
The wheel I spin every week to see what mental problem I'm gonna have next.
This is a legitimate and damaging cultural shift for all involved parties and it needs to be addressed.
And that's why most true crime cases of the 70s 80s are children dissapearing. Also in those same decades the average age of first drinking and smoking was 12, 13. Why would that be,I guess?
Guys you are not gonna put a child into the world and just let it do anything it wants and you will have no work to do and not have to watch over them. Come on
The last tweet is literally saying people are having less kids cuz they can't neglect them anymore and they have to, gasp, take care of their kids.
i think the idea here is that neighborhoods used to be safer and you could reasonably expect a gaggle of kids to be able to keep track of each other, and to be able to trust that your kid could go to someone else's house if they needed help, and the loss of this sense of community is the issue that needs addressing
but you're right that whenever you seem to look at older missing child cases, especially from the 60s or thereabouts, it's like a five year old who was sent to get her brother from the park in the evening, or an eight year old skipping school and just wandering around town alone and going missing, so i think there is some survivorship bias and nostalgic idealism as well
but it should be safe to let your kids play outside and the fact that it's not is definitely a societal failure (and ofc the reason it's not is largely bc of male predators although women will snatch babies)
u also make a good point abt that last tweet lol like i think it touches on a good point abt mothers needing a village, needing a support net, bc now they're more isolated than ever but the truth is that when women are given the freedom of choice they choose to have less kids and any other argument can come across as again idealizing this time when women were pressured or forced to have more children
Here's the thing: It is not, in fact, unsafe to let kids play outside. There is less violent crime now that there has ever been since we started measuring it: https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2024/04/24/what-the-data-says-about-crime-in-the-us/
There is not an epidemic of strangers in white vans snatching kids off the street. The person most likely to abduct a child is that child's non-custodial parent: https://childfindofamerica.org/resources/facts-and-stats-missing-children/
This 'danger' is entirely perceptual and enforced by outside authorities.
Cell phones exist now, and kids are more able than ever to have a way to instantly contact help or be tracked if they go missing, but children and their parents are more surveilled than ever:
Child services to the rescue.
The age that kids start playing — walking, biking, frolicking outside — should be up to the parents. But that’s not always the case. A few y
When it comes to walking to school alone, there's no one-size-fits-all rule. But there are ways to determine if your child is ready.
@maria-scariotes the reason most True Crime stories are abducted kids is not because kids were much more commonly abducted - it's because those are stories that viewers find compelling. Kids are STILL starting to become nicotine dependant at 12-13 - they're just far more likely to be vaping now than smoking cigarettes. https://www.reuters.com/article/business/healthcare-pharmaceuticals/vaping-is-taking-off-among-younger-children-and-tweens-idUSKBN1YS1EH/
Perpetual supervision is actually very bad for kids:
Community centres for information on learning and development disabilities
This doctor is wants all children to go outside and play. He's asking his state to pass a law allowing kids to play unsupervised.
Studies reveal how risky play can benefit child development. But encouraging it can be a challenge for parents.
I thought the danger was... the increased size of the motor vehicles on the road, and the increased dependency on such vehicles?
Which is an actual, though separate, concern here.
This is an outside chance and Im sorry to ask but I really hope you can help me. Ive got a research proposal to write for a class on research methods, but my professor is super unhelpful in explaining the steps and Im getting so confused in how to do it. He tells me my methodology is wrong, but when I ask for help he just says I need to work it out myself because thats the assignment
I dont know if this is your specialization or not but the deadline is approaching. I dont want you to do it for me obviously but how do I go about this? Im mad stressed and Im stuck. How do you write a good methodology? Is there a system everyone else knows but me?
Well, first of all, your professor is a shit teacher, so jot that down.
Second of all, I'm so sorry you're so stressed. Even through this ask I can FEEL your mental state trying to dissolve. But, I promise you can do this, Anon. You won't enjoy it; but, that's not the same thing. You can do it.
Third of all, there's no universal system; BUT, good news! There's an Elanor System. And I'm about to teach it to you. Take my hand. We've got this.
Step 1 - the Research Questions
Start here!
Your research questions should be formatted as literal questions, and this is what your study wants to answer. "How many fruit pastilles does it take to choke a kestrel?" "Do dragons breathe hotter fire in the day than the night?" "Are oak trees more effective than beeches at stabilising Welsh soils?"
(One, no, and yes)
Have at least one question, and an absolute maximum of three. Crucially, these questions need to be specific. For example:
"What's the link between coastal development and sand lizard conservation?" - too broad. How are we defining "conservation"? How can you measure it?
"Are sand lizard populations higher in undeveloped areas than developed areas?" - much better. Directly actionable (you just count them), easily defined (has the coastal site been built on or not)
For the sake of this tutorial, I shall use that last one.
Step 2 - Anticipate the Data
So, put simply, what data/results would answer this question?
I'm not talking the actual data yet, obviously - you need to carry out the research to get that! But, in broad terms, what sort of thing is needed for you to consider that question answered?
Take a look at our example - Are sand lizard populations higher in undeveloped areas than developed areas?
To answer this, I need:
Some developed (i.e. built up) sites
Some undeveloped (i.e. semi-natural) sites
A head count of the sand lizards in each
Then, sketch out for yourself what this data might look like in a table, graph, map, etc. Whatever format is needed to display the data. Here's our lizards:
The numbers are totally made up, of course. It's not about them. They aren't part of this experience. The TYPE of data, on the other hand, is; because this now leads perfectly into the next step:
Step 3 - the Protocol
This is no longer a broad, vague and terrifying spectre. This is now specific and targeted. Your protocol now is not about testing for "sand lizard conservation". It's about getting the actual numbers to plug into that graph above.
So, I now know I need to do a census of sand lizards in a selection of developed/undeveloped sites. This is the central plank of my methodology.
Firstly: how many sites? Maybe five of each type? How am I defining "developed" and "undeveloped"? What other variables might affect this, e.g. sand dune height/stability, visitation numbers, predator numbers, etc. A little bit of research will let me decide these points, and then I just need to select the sites locally. Do they have public access? Maybe logistics mean this comes down to three of each type.
Secondly, what are the best census techniques for sand lizards? Again, a bit of research will tell me this. Nothing wrong with finding a published paper that's already looked at this, and copying their methodology - it's peer-reviewed, and replicability is important in science.
Thirdly, consider the following:
Is your protocol written out clearly in an easy-to-follow way? Think of baking recipes. Could a third party replicate your work based on your description?
Variables. I've mentioned some already, but what else? An obvious answer here is weather - will that affect sand lizard numbers between sites? What about time of day/year?
Replicability: if you or anyone else wanted to do the same study in five years' time, or on a different selection of sites, etc, could they? They should be able to.
Practicality: are you physically capable of the tasks? Do you have the necessary equipment? Etc
But, fundamentally, your protocol should be able to get you the data you identified in step 2. If instead my plan here was just to count lizards on a single beach, that would be a fail - there's no site comparison. If instead I decided to survey the dune vegetation in both, that might well provide good habitat insights, but it's not getting me the abundance data I need to make that graph.
Step 4 - Timing
We have a protocol! So now: the logistics
Can your plans be done in the time you have available?
Maybe I only have three weeks to count my lizards. If so, depending on the weather, that may well be too little time for a full ten sites. Especially if each site requires more than one visit. If so, I need to amend my plans.
My recommendation for this step:
Work out how much time you have available
List the individual jobs needed (e.g. walk 100m transect 5 times)
Estimate how long each job will take, using whatever unit is appropriate (e.g. days)
Evaluate - is there enough time?
Gantt charts are great for this, and you can find free online Gantt chart makers. They also look good in the research proposal
******
And that, in a nutshell, is it! There's obviously more depth you can add in various ways, but that's your basic protocol construction. The value of a protocol is how well it can answer its research questions - I imagine this is where you're going wrong atm, and currently you're being too broad. So, start with the questions, decide on the needed data, work out the steps needed to get that data, assess logistics.
If you're still struggling, hmu, but hopefully this helps
In hindsight it's very insulting to be told that flunking out of college due to adhd is actually "quite common"
just like, if there's a history at your institution of disabled kids not being able to make it you realise that's your fault right. like why don't you fucking do something about it. i guess they tried to do something about it with me and it failed so they let me go. crazy. nice work. why should we try to do any better.
only 5% of people with adhd who go to college finish a degree. FUCKING. FIVE!!! PERCENT!!!!!!!!!!!
that should disgust and enrage you.
if any other demographic of students had a 95% failure rate, we would be demanding reform and studies to understand why that’s happening
when i was at my first university, trying to get accommodations for my ADHD, they just kept asking me what accommodations i wanted, and refused to answer when i would ask what was available to me. how the Hell am i supposed to know what i can have? what’s available???? also, i don’t know!!!! i’m an adhd sufferer, not a fucking disability expert for the fucking college, unlike you, DISABILITY EXPERT WHO WORKS FOR THE COLLEGE.
but because the us is OBSESSED with making sure no one gets anything “”for free””, she literally would not tell me what my options were until i broke down in tears and asked her why she was refusing to help me. and then she did a big sigh, like i was fucking up her entire career by *checks notes* asking the disability center in my university to help me, a disabled student
at the second uni i went to, i tried to explain to a dean that i was literally two gen eds that had nothing to do with my degree away from graduating and that i was burnt out and broke and exhausted and suicidal and i just needed to be able to finish my degree without the gen eds. and this. fucking. guy. looked me right in my face and said in the most patronizing tone he could muster “if you can’t handle it, then maybe college just isn’t for you.” keep in mind that up until that semester, i had been an honor student who made Dean’s List every semester and didn’t get below Bs. if it hadn’t been for my mental breakdown, i would have graduated cum laude, maybe even summa cum laude.
but this dean of students looked a disabled person right in the face and said well i guess you just can’t do it, short bus
Pulled these from a couple articles really quick but yeah the statistics are not kind. I remember writing a scathing essay about my issues with ADHD and college as part of an assignment for academic probation. I got back an email calling me entitled and lazy. Somehow, this thread helps me feel a lot better. I still have about a semester of school unfinished that I’m unsure if I’ll finish but… yeah. Makes me feel better to know it’s not just me.
PSA: The Job Accommodation Network maintains a searchable database of accommodation suggestions for a wide variety of disabilities.
The full database can be accessed here and the ADHD page is here. The full database can be filtered by disability, by limitation, by work-related function, by topic, and by accommodation. Many of these accommodations are applicable to academic settings as well as the workplace.
Here are the section headers for ADHD accommodations ideas to give an overview of what the page contains - this post would become Do You Love the Color of the Accommodation if I attempted to list them all here
The ADHD page linked above also includes case examples and strategies for determining what sort of accommodations might be necessary. More broadly, the JAN website as a whole is a treasure trove of information related to the Americans with Disabilities Act and resources for both individuals and employers.
ADHD and learning disabilities in general are so fun because you can be dignosed with a disability, show your papers showing you have a disability and everyone agrees you have said disability, yet every single time you struggle or are /disabled/ in some way because of it you are just told "Oh, everyone's like that. Try harder."

"craving a food means your body needs something that food can offer" now what the fuck does my body need with an ice cream
it makes your brain happy! your body could use some joy too
no everyone shut up and listen. truths were said
in all seriousness, if you're craving ice cream, it's likely that your body needs fat and carbs. If ice cream isn't an option for whatever reason, you can try to feed yourself something else with a significant amount of fat and/or carbs. You may also be dehydrated if you're craving sweets.
That said, sometimes your body and brain do genuinely just need a pick me up.
The more frequently you practice intuitive eating like this, the better you'll get at figuring out what it is that your body is asking for.
Also, a great trick is to take a look at what you're craving, note the nutritional contents (fat, carbs, protein, plant matter/fiber) and try and figure out what else sounds tasty for your particular craving. This can give you more data points to go off of. For instance, if you're craving ice cream, but a sweet roll sounds just as good, it's probably carbs your body is asking you for. That said, if you're craving ice cream and a sweet roll doesn't sound good at all BUT a bagel with strawberry cream cheese or avocado toast DOES sound good, you know it's fat you're needing.
If all you're craving is ice cream and nothing else sounds worth the effort, you may just need a low effort mood boost, which is also totally valid! This can also help you even if you can't have ice cream, because now that you know what your body actually wants, you know there are more ways to fulfill that order than the way it asked you to!
My perfect mashed potatoes
The secret is in the water; literally, it’s IN the water.
See, when you boil potatoes, a lot of special starches and sugars and stuff leeches out into the water. When you drain the water before mashing them, you throw away a lot of good stuff, which is a big part of what makes mashed potatoes “dry” and bland, even when you add large amounts of cream and butter and things.
So don’t throw out any water.
Here’s how you do that:
First, cut your potatoes into smaller cubes than you probably do. (I’ve left the skins on for flavor and also, that’s where a lot of a potato’s nutrients are, like protien and iron and vitamins B and C, just to name a few)
The reason for cutting them smaller (besides avoiding giant peices of skin) is so that there is less space in the pot between each peice for water to fill, so you use less water to cook them. That’s important because you won’t be draining any water, so you can’t afford to have too much water! For the same reason, just barely cover them with water when they go on the stove.
But! Before you do that, put the pot on the stove with some butter, garlic, and seasonings; let the butter start to sizxle just a little then put most of a single layer of potatoes in the pan and let the brown and sear. Turn them, brown them on all sides, get ‘em fairly dark (I forgot to get a pic here because I was worried I’d burn the butter).
Ready? now throw the rest of the potatoes in right on top, and add your water, give them a stir. This way, you’re boiling in some of that lovely fried potato/french fry flavor.
Okay, so, as they cook, you may need to add a little water, not too much! ideally the very highest piece of potato will be poking just above the surface. Now, when your potatoes are really really soft, mash them directly into the water. Just pull them off the stove, leave all the water in, and start mashing. Trust me. At first you’ll think there’s too much water. If you get them mashed and they ARE a little too liquidy, just put ‘em back on the stove. You’ll have to stir often or constantly, but they will steam off additional water without losing any good stuff.
Now add some salt, and taste. Right?! And you haven’t even put in any cream or cheese or anything yet.
Speaking of which, you can use like, a third of the amount of butter or cream or anything, and they will still taste better than usual. So they taste better AND they are higher in nutrients AND lower in fats and salts! That’s a lot of win — enjoy your potatoes!
Fuck Columbus! Indigenous Rights! And happy Thanksgiving!
Smash Potato Quiche —
I actually went and found the video and this guy listed the full recipe
Recipe:
Ingredients:
2 lbs boiled yellow potatoes
1 cup local milk
1/2 cup local 35% Cream
6 whole eggs
1 cup diced ham
1 cup sliced cherry tomatoes
2 cups cleaned spinach
1 scotch bonnet pepper or jalapeno sliced thinly (optional)
1 cup grated local mozzarella
3 tablespoons salt - 2 for the water to cook the potatoes and 1 for the egg and milk mixture
1 tablespoon black pepper
2 tablespoons chopped chives
2 tablespoons local salted butter
Method
Add your potatoes to a large stock pot and fill with cold water. Add salt and allow to boil until fork tender. Once ready strain water and allow to cool for a few minutes
Preheat oven to 350°F
Grease a large cake tin thoroughly with butter and add your now cooled boiled potatoes.
Using the back of a cup gently press down on the potatoes to form your crust.
Add spinach, diced ham, and tomatoes
In a large bowl whisk together milk, cream and eggs. Then carefully pour this into your shell.
Top this with a sprinkle of salt and pepper, hot pepper slices, and mozzarella.
Place this on top of a baking sheet and bake on the middle rack for 45-50 minutes.
Remove from oven and let cool for 10 minutes before slicing.
Finish with chopped chives and enjoy.
Welp. Google's AI horseshit has arrived. And I'm not complying. They can pry my ID out of my cold dead hands. I will simply go elsewhere. Remember folks, DO NOT GIVE THEM YOUR IDs. Do not comply. Resist, fight it, use other browsers or sources beyond youtube and google controlled services. Call them. Email them. Make noise. Fight back.
I've been using Google as my main mail service since 2006, and every single account or service I've ever signed up for was made with that address. For a long time I thought it'd be impossible to divorce myself from Google.
It took less than 5 minutes to switch to a ProtonMail account, less than 2 hours to download and/or offload every byte of data from my Google account, and less than 3 days to change every single account or service I've ever signed up for to the new address.
As of today, the only single one I have that's still tied to it is YouTube. It's the only thing I'd lose access to if I deleted my Google acount entirely.
They really, really want you to believe that it's a hassle to switch to a different email system. But it's not. Most websites and/or services allow you to change the email address associated with it.
I've been using Google for almost 2 decades and it only took a few days to move everything. It's not a painful sacrifice; it's an easy change that, frankly, has absolutely been worth it.
Proton Shoutout
You can and should switch to a free, encrypted Proton email account. You also get all of the below perks. For free. There is no trick. It is paid for by the people with paying plans. I am one of them. The (completely functional) free tier is there to entice you into getting a paid account with even more perks. (It worked on me.) But there's no penalty or pressure for staying with the free account.
Also get your stuff off the google drive and put it on Proton's drive. It is encrypted. Only you with your password can access it. Not even Proton can see what you put in there.
Switch everything away from Google. It's easy and it's important. Read above, click the link for Proton, download your gmail and switch.
god i hate how normalized diet culture and shit like bmi and calories are. bmi is based on eugenics. calories are a measurement of how much energy something gives u and not at all of how much weight or fat ull gain. diets have been proven to be harmful and ultimately unhelpful in actually losing weight. fatness has been largely proven to not be inherently unhealthy and doesnt inherently cause health issues.
if anyone has more good links to add on then please do and if anyone knows more on this stuff than me then dont hesitate to correct me!
FOOD IS GOOD. FOOD IS GOOD. FOOD IS GOOD!! if you’re eating, ever, and even/especially if it’s hard, know that i am personally SO SO proud of you
The BMI was invented by Adolphe Quetelet, the 19th century statistician who invented phrenologist anthropometry. He wasn’t just a eugenicist, he was one of the founding fathers of racist pseudoscience. Please do not listen to anything he has to say about your body.
“And get this: While epidemiologists use BMI to calculate national obesity rates (nearly 35 percent for adults and 18 percent for kids), the distinctions can be arbitrary. In 1998, the National Institutes of Health lowered the overweight threshold from 27.8 to 25—branding roughly 29 million Americans as fat overnight—to match international guidelines. But critics noted that those guidelines were drafted in part by the International Obesity Task Force, whose two principal funders were companies making weight loss drugs.”
Source: https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2014/08/why-bmi-big-fat-scam/
Body mass index is used to sell weight loss drugs, set insurance premiums, and counsel patients. There's just one little problem.
I always thought everyone knew this by like the early 2000s but instead I see more people than ever believing this stuff is real medical science
Man if y'all folks up thread thought this situation was bad back in 2021 (as I did too) you won’t BELIEVE what the 2026 cultural convo on these topics is like.
Also, BMI wasn’t meant to be used as a medical assessment and only came into common usage after a quack dietician popularised it in the 70s, using biased research to support his points. He’s the kind of man who engaged in starvation trials, using ‘volunteers’ from camps where conscientious objectors were held.
[Video transcript: Let's make lahsa, a wonderful Yemeni breakfast. it's cheesy, gooey, and so light you can finish an entire pan. Having it for breakfast will put a smile on your face. If you love shakskuka, lahsa's gonna make you unfaithful. Start by chopping a large onion, 2 large tomatoes, and some chiles. Sauté the onion in some olive oil--Al Wali, of course. Once the onions start to brown, add the tomatoes. Season with salt, pepper, cumin, coriander, paprika, tomato puree, and any spices that you like. You're the boss of your lahsa. Add the chiles, and let the tomatoes cook till dissolved. Crack 3 eggs on top, add a splash of water, and mix it very thoroughly on low. Spread some liquid cheese* on top while it's cooking. You can also use cream cheese if you want. I think this is where the name comes from, the cheese being spread into a thin layer.
Cover, and let it cook for a couple of minutes. Garnish with some green. Have it with bread, a cup of tea, and enjoy.

*in the notes, several people suggest the liquid cheese is labneh
That right there is a good solid burger patty with the intriguing addition of middle eastern spices 👀👀👀 (and as we all know variety is the spice of life, and spice is the variety of food.) I’m also intrigued by how she put the patty in the pita(?) which makes it a sort of burger panini. It looks good and I am going to have to try it.
I want to make this for my family, but my mom’s pretty iffy on beef that is anything but well done (dry as fuck) so I’m wondering how to cook it throughly enough without burning the bread.
You can cook it in very thin pita with a thin layer of minced beef/lamb so that the meat is cooked brown all the way through in only 1 minute per side.
But also! Red Meat is "Well Done" at 160F/72C (white meat is 165F/75C). Bread actually doesn't even toast until 255F/123C!!
So, if you make the full size patties in a frying pan on a low-medium heat, or an oven set to 300F/150C, it will take about 20 minutes to cook instead of only 3 minutes, but it will DEFINITELY not burn the bread, and the meat will be VERY well done.
Here is the oven based recipe I suggested elsewhere on the post
The first time I had this dish was in Lebanon when a childhood friend took me to a restaurant called Taaj El-Moulook (meaning The kings’crow
@bananafosters In case you are interested also!
Confirmed: delicious
I'm curious as to what the spices/seasonings in the beef are cause I wanna make this myself so bad
There's always fresh Parsley and Lebanon 7 spice (sabaa baharat), and then in the tiktok there's also onion, garlic, and jalapeno. A lot of people also put in tomato, or tomato paste.
My favourite 7 spice is equal parts:
Cinnamon
Black Pepper
Cumin
Cloves
Coriander
Allspice or nutmeg
Ginger or Cardamom
But really, as long as you have the italicized ones, the others can be up to you. Some people use paprika and turmeric, some people use sumac and mint. It's really variable.
Also if you don't want to mix it yourself, a good Garam Masala will have all of these spices and a few more, and makes an excellent ready-to-use substitute.
note that's coriander seed, not leaf (aka cilantro) - coriander seed is amazing, smells like a paradise lemon and is really good in porridge (aka oatmeal) - we're one of those people who can't eat the leaf, but the seed is really delicious and fragrant
internet shaquille made a super accessible video on how to make these, including the spice mix and what to use if you can't access the exact ingredients! it's quite similar advice to what the commenters put above, just in one handy video for your reference
I just googled this and… yes, it’s absolutely real.
And there are so many articles and videos and discussions. Like, the scientific community is buzzing about this.
So much research will have to be redone because the data was absolutely compromised, off by orders of magnitude, by using standard lab gloves.
The world is probably not horrifically contaminated by microplastics. Sterile laboratories, however, are contaminated by latex and nitrile gloves.
Thank God someone bothered to check.

Ordinary Lab Gloves May Have Skewed Microplastic Data: That doesn’t mean microplastics aren’t a problem, though
That should be enough
While I appreciate the enthusiasm for citation, none of these are primary sources.
Here is the study (no paywall).
Some questions I had that were answered:
How are gloves made of organic materials contaminating an inorganic sample?
In the manufacturing process, stearate salts are used to remove gloves from molds, these salts have an almost identical size and shape to microplastics.
Does this mean all the old studies are null?
No. Like many scientific studies, this one was conducted in a way that simulates an extreme situation. They tested how much residue was left behind if a researcher were to have pinched a slide between their fingers. However, a professional in a lab should not be doing that. You are supposed to pick up slides by the sides for this exact reason. Some studies may need to be redone, but in general reexamining results is the recommended response.
So are microplastics actually an issue?
Yes. While previous studies MAY have been contaminated, they also may not have been. And even if they were, it’s unlikely results were skewed to the level of ignoring the impact of microplastics altogether. Keep using natural materials, please.
the idea that restrooms, locker rooms, etc need to be single-sex spaces in order for women to be safe is patriarchy's way of signalling to men & boys that society doesn't expect them to behave themselves around women. it is directly antifeminist. it would be antifeminist even if trans people did not exist. a feminist society would demand that women should be safe in all spaces even when there are men there.
btw this is maybe the single most key distinguishing feature of the terfy strains of radical feminism, the seed all the rest of it springs out of: they have absolutely no faith in the ability of feminism to actually destroy patriarchy. they do not think feminism can truly build a better world. they cannot really even imagine that possibility. they think patriarchy is an inevitable natural consequence of unchangeable biological facts, and therefore the goal of feminism can only be to mitigate the worst effects of patriarchy, not to get rid of it.
they can imagine a society where women get some designated safe spaces without men around. they cannot imagine a society where the presence of men is not inherently a danger to women.
So I was thinking about this the other day with regard to the fact that terfs now apparently want to gender-segregate not just sports, but also chess tournaments and trivia quiz shows that, let’s be honest, there’s no rationale behind gender-segregating that isn’t misogynistic to some degree.
(Well, ok, I know the real reason they want to do that is to keep trans people out. But still, I think the way they frame it is worth examining here.)
Because when pressed about it, of course they’re not going to outright say “we just think men are naturally smarter than women”. But the most common response I’ve stumbled on is to say “well, males have a social advantage.”
Now, in a vacuum (and again if you ignore the thinly-veiled transphobia) it’s not an entirely unreasonable statement. Men do have systematic privilege over women. The trouble is that they never seem all that willing to explain how exactly that “social advantage” manifests itself when it comes to chess tournaments, or how gender-segregating them will help to dismantle it. If anything I’d say that doing this contributes to the social advantage they’re on about, because as many have pointed out, it perpetuates the message that women aren’t on the same intellectual level as men and can’t be expected to compete with them.
So again, doing anything that might actually contribute to dismantling the patriarchy is apparently out of the question (or at least it is if it involves having to get your head out of your arse and accept the existence of trans people.) It’s just something we have to accept and work around, like bad weather.

hey, don’t cry. one half flour one half yogurt knead into dough and fry for easy flatbread and dip in balsamic vinegar, okay?
After three batches, my findings so far:
I use full fat Greek yoghurt and self-rising flour
Ratio by weight
Add a pinch of salt
Knead until no longer sticky, adding more flour if necessary
Roll them with olive oil instead of flour and fry in an otherwise unoiled, preheated pan (medium heat) (trust in the lord; it will seem like it's going to stick to the pan at first but they'll unstick in about 15 seconds)
Roll them thin but not too thin; mine take about 45 seconds on either side
Serving with garlic butter is also a very good option
I’m gonna be eating these for a month
This actually works?? Two-ingredient bread??
I gotta try it.
That's...naan.
That's naan?
*runs to Google*
HOLY SHIT THAT IS NAAN! HOW DID I NOT KNOW NAAN WAS THAT EASY TO MAKE?
this is one of those rare easy bread recipes that also works with gluten free flour! the yoghurt helps with structural integrity. you may want a pinch of xanthan gum if your flour doesn't come with it mixed in. i like to mix some rosemary into the flour to have a herby naan, since i can't have garlic.
ADD CUMIN. Holy shit. Add cumin to the flour its so good!
The rosemary one is also fab
the new york times has such a great series of elevated butter noodles, if you ever want a super fast easy dinner that still feels grown up and you can emulsify pasta water + butter together basically the sky is your limit
ya got
gochujang butter noodles
peanut butter noodles
chili crisp fettuccine alfredo
miso butter noodles
any one of these + a bag of salad or whatever vegetable side you find easiest/cheapest, and you've got yourself a full meal that tastes far above the effort you put in.
