Hmmm I wrote something about this inspired by someone else ages ago but with Billy, Vicki, and Lois...

Anyways, Billy and Lois!

Lois, grabbing Billy by his backpack and hoisting him into her arms, trying to maneuver an active battlefield without accidently killing the kid: Has anyone ever told you youre really light? Like... I felt like I was picking up a cat.

Billy, one arm around Lois' shoulder, his other hand trying to point her towards the action: Yeah. Malnutrition does that to ya. Take a left here, I saw Superman go down Main Street with Luthor in tow!

For fights that don't require Captain, Billy is there anyways, reporting. After the first few run ins, he became fairly good friends with Lois, using her as a faster method of travel during battles. For a lady who sometimes wears heels to fights, shes really good at scaling wreakage.

Lois thinks Billy is a good but naive kid. What kind of idiot runs into an active crime scene!? (Shes a hypocrite, she does the same thing). She honestly really concerned about his wellbeing and takes him out for lunches and dinners after battles.

Billy, grabbing Lois shirt to pull her out of the way of falling debris: Did you see GL fly past? WHIZ wants a GL update.

Lois, nudging Billy so he doesnt step in a burning crater: Can't say that I have. Do we have eyes on Batman?

Does polio Bruce become Batman

Oh wow I didn't expect people to actually like Polio Bruce- the idea had been rotting in my Drafts for so long haha-

Yes! With the help of modern medicine, braces and aids built into the costume, and his normal training, I fully believe Polio Bruce could and would become Batman still. Of course it would be way more difficult now with a life altering chronic illness, but Bruce's guilt and desperation to 'fix his mistakes' would, no matter what, lead him to pursuing crime fighting.

Tho, on the flip side, Polio Bruce would probably never be considered as Batman. His childhood Polio, the death of his parents, and his reclusiveness for a few years means literally no one suspects him of being a crime fighter. When he finally starts playing into the Tragic Rich Boy in public, the "Batman can't be Bruce Wayne!" doubles in popularity cuz poor Bruce tears up every time his parents are mentioned and his Butler is still his main caregiver.

Bruce would be an ambulatory wheelchair user, I think. He can stand and fight and live life walking, but particular after a rough patrol and horrible aches, he has a very nice custom chair. He partially makes a show of it at parties, milling about for just long enough before requesting his wheelchair. It works to garner sympathy... which kinda sucks that able bodied rich people dont respect him as a functional adult but at least they donate a lot of money to research and eradication of polio.

Bruce Wayne who recovered from Polio as a kid... wrote about it last night but I wanna expand on it...

He would have gotten polio before his parents died. A year before that fateful night, Bruce first showed symptoms, and it tore Thomas and Martha to shreds finding out their once healthy baby boy had something that at that point had a 25ish% fatality rate and a guarantee that Bruce would forever be disabled. Thomas was a doctor, they were rich and successful, but that didnt stop sickness from coming after their son.

The night the Waynes were murdered, Bruce insisted on walking home. He had just gotten new leg braces and crutches, he wanted to badly to test them out.

He blamed himself and his illness for the death of his parents. Even after he recovered from polio, after he started Batman training and funneling all Wayne money into medical research, he still blames himself.

To the public, Bruce is an icon for recovery and medical research. But internally? He has so much built up shame and guilt he will forever struggle to move on from.

Dick, being Romani, and acutely aware of the racism that permeates rich circles, but only now realizing how much of it Bruce went out of his way to protect him from. (I gently hold up my Bruce's parents are first generation korean/jewish immigrants HC)

Bruce, who would distract Dick and shower him with praise if someone so much as looked at Dick funny. He would pull funding in a heartbeat if someone dared to insult his childs upbringing/culture. Cuz he knows what it's like for the elite of Gotham to view him like a specimen rather than a person.

And Dick knows, too. And he can see it happening to Damian. And he starts to mirror what Bruce did for him.

"Come on, Dami, let's go so you can study for your exam. Which exam? You know, for the super important and hard to get into medical college you go to? The one that only the best of the best attend? And you're top of your class? That one."

"*You're the CEO of the company that reposted my baby brothers face for clicks? Wow! Great to meet you! I'm so glad I could see your face when you notice the missing funding this month!"

I love that everyone is in agreement that Billy Batson turns into Captain Marvel, flies as high as he can and turns back into Billy just to drop then change back before he hits the ground like some adrenaline junkie.

This but angst and its also self training to not panic when an adult super villain inevitably tries to kill him. The first time someone forced him into his kid form then dropped him from the sky, he nearly died. Some other hero had to save him because he panicked so hard and failed to switch back. After that, he starts to throw himself off buildings and transform mid air 'as practice' and 'just in case'. Other heros try and convince him this is a bad idea, that its just traumatizing him, but what do they know! Not like he has nightmares of falling from the sky that feel so real he can *feel* his body crushing against the concrete right before waking up...

The Justice League holds a group therapy thing, where heros sit in a circle, introduce themselves and say a fear. A lot of them are normal (dying, being alone, spiders), some are ironic (bats) and then theres Billy. Sat in his kid form, fiddling with his sleeve. They expect him to say something like needles or bugs or something suitable for a kid. But no... he starts to ramble about how hes scared of falling, of breaking all his bones against the earth, of waking up in a hospital- he gets cut off by someone urging him to take a breather.

The Penguin hates Batman for Cobblepot VS Wayne/Pennyworth reasons, petty rich and British family reasons. But Oswald just can't being himself to hate any of the Robins. The kids are small and cute and scrappy little birds and birds are his whole thing and he just... its not his fault! Batman stole his whole theme!

Bruce: For one, Billy is juggling a job, college, and superhero duties. For two, you have super speed.

Barry, sitting back arms crossed: Yeah, whatever...

He has the Wisdom of Slomon whenever he'd like, if not to cheat then to make some killer study notes and simplifications, on top of superspeed and stamina to pull every all-nighter he wants.

Billy truly could breeze through any academic hardship but he's gotta do it honestly, it makes him feel wrong if he does otherwise (canonically)

It’s also worth noting that(hehe, this is one of my favorite pieces of Billy angst😁) Billy’s bad grades kept him from going with his family to Egypt. He’s desperate to do well in his studies and retain as much info as possible (honestly, like you said).

Billy, halfway through a bachelor's in archeology (maybe Egyptology? I know Egyptology is lowkey controversial but the angst-), just crying in the middle of a dark, empty Watchtower meeting room because one of his tests came back a C instead of an A (simple mistake on the teachers part, an accidental incorrect grade due to a misunderstanding) but Billy is just sobbing, tears dripping onto his laptop keys, vision blurry, breathing frantic, as he tries (and fails) to send an email politely asking for the grade to be reconsidered. He thought he would be over the academic trauma by now, but seeing his perfect 100% in the class suddenly drop to an 80% sends him spiraling.

What if I keep failing? What if me getting a C kills my friends? Something bad is going to everyone I love if my grades aren't perfect.

I think Clark would find him (super hearing) and would just sit with him rubbing his back until he stops crying, gently take the laptop, and help him rewrite what he already put down. Blubbering apologies and pleas to an actually formatted request with links to sources that prove the grade was wrong. Clark knows some of the anxiety that comes with failure, both as a hero and as and student. The fear of letting everyone down...or worse...

More than once, random new hero hires have stumbled across a tiny child sleeping on a random couch or chair. They get super confused and concerned cuz most other kid/teen heros at least wear masks, but this kid has his whole identity visible!!!! And other heros have to be like 'nah that's just Billy lol'.

He's a child from the 40s. The internet straight up didn't exist for most of his existence, and even when the time bubble popped + the 90s hit, he's a little boy who does not need to be online. He's had a library card literally forever, so when they updated to have computers, he occasionally uses them to play Minecraft at Freddy's request.

Batman: Why did you go MIA for a week? I sent an email about needing to check in at least every 48 hours.

I have a family friend who worked at our local Salvation Army headquarters as a a secretary. This particular office took all the Christmas donations for children in need, put them in a warehouse, and on a designated day the staff and their friends picked through them all, taking whatever they wanted. She saw people hauling away bikes donated for specific families. Some local children had hundreds of dollars of gifts donated in their name, and on Christmas they received three cheap things, items likely not even from the person who sponsored them.

My friend quit, and I’ve not given them a dime of my money since then.

Do not give to the Salvation Army.

I’m a wildfire and disaster logistics specialist.

I deal with a lot of agencies who provide disaster relief.

I used to say the Salvation Army’s disaster services were the one (literally the ONE) good thing they did.

They would come in, set up a canteen trailer, make and pass out hot coffee and donated food in a disaster, usually being one of the first agencies to get there and the last to leave.

Then I found out.

Every time they did this, regardless of if they were actually invited or deployed by the agency in charge (usually FEMA, sometimes others) they would SELF-DEPLOY. Meanjng they would just show up. Ok. That’s not TOO bad, sometimes agencies have to take initiative and get there before the red tape is sorted out. BUT. They, after they left at the end of the incident, they would send FEMA or the host agency a BILL. They used one or two paid employees (usually the driver of the truck and a supervisor); and many VOLUNTEERS, but they would bill for EVERYONE’s Labor at standard federal rates. They would bill for the food they distributed even though it was all donated by another agency or private parties. They would bill for the coffee they made and the supplies. Except they would use electricity from the shelter location, water from donations or from the shelter, and in many cases, they would get the coffee and industrial filters DONATED, but bill for them at retail prices.

Don’t FUCKING give to the Salvation Army.

The Salvation Army is also ass to the workers. A good number of people join it, naively thinking that it’s doing good, and end up leaving cynical and beaten down. The management is hostile, if not outright abusive, and demand some ridiculous hours of it lower to mid-level staff. Don’t support these people.

Salvation Army reached out to Milknmuffins and asked what shelter she’s at with the promise to address the abuse in it. She…ended up saying where she was. She was thrown out onto the street. It’s also all on Twitter.

They invited her to a personal talk so she could explain the situation in person.

Donate to your local Head Start program instead! I work at one, and while we are government funded, THE GOVERNMENT BEING SHUT DOWN MEANS WE RISK GETTING SHUT DOWN!!!!! Head Start supports children and their families as a free daycare/preschool, and we can always use donations of supplies and time! In fact, we literally HAVE to have certain $ amounts donated total by the end of the year! Find out where your local Head Start is and see if you can donate, volunteer, anything! The kids love new friends!
