i feel like people think companies will be altruistic and do the right thing regardless of government intervention. like no, companies are driven by capitalism. to make the most out of the day and money they have and maximize profits, especially fortune 500 companies

like without government intervention, strawberry jam would have wood in it. like it's a thing. food companies realized that they could use less of the expensive strawberries as ingredients and just use wood. there are laws you cannot legally call it strawberry jam if you do this. you have to call it a strawberry product or spread. food companies are always trying to get that shit through. they have lobby groups pushing that all the time

it is more expensive to put metal detectors in a food processing plant. companies want to cut costs. it is a legal requirement in a lot of countries to have them. so it forces companies to install them.

also to do routine inspections. that is a government requirement. so are building codes. a lot of codes are the bare minimum. like some companies will exceed the code and have more protections but a lot don't. like if it is not in the code, they don't do it. so that's why having governing bodies that regulate building safety, worker safety, food safety and product safety are crucial. because without them, your employer will not see the need to have exit doors with quick release handles, or do routine fire sprinkler inspections or have road salt for the sidewalks. some of it is basic fucking stuff.

companies when left alone do not regulate themselves. it's been historically untrue. companies want to give you a product that is cheap for them to make and that they can sell at the highest price so they can get the most profit. for everyone who loves capitalism, that's what it is. the free market will not self-regulate. if you don't have anti-monopoly laws and anti-wage theft laws and workers' protections, the open market will not fix that organically.

when government officials talk about removing protections it is not good. like they were put in place for a reason. like drinking water and food regulations were written in blood. same with human rights and freedoms. like people died for the building code to be written. people died for occupational healthy and safety codes to be written. there is a reason food safety codes are there. companies will look at 100 people dying and say it was the cost of doing business. it is the government's job to say that is an unacceptable and for companies to do better

Ship is copy editing a novel that was originally written in Japanese, and one line they had to edit for clarity in English was "the river was so big it could be considered a large river," which was so clearly the result of there being a specific term for "a river that's huge" in the original language and not in English that I was like why the fuck DON'T we have a word for that though ???

i have often wondered this, bc it threw me off enormously as a child, bc the rivers I had personal experience with were the Huron river in Michigan and the Soque river here in north Georgia, pictured:

And I was thus utterly baffled by stories where rivers were these massive and incredibly dangerous things that were impossible to ford. I was always like... like, I believe you, but I have no way of envisioning this based on the rivers I have met.

Now as an adult, the largest river I've met personally is the Colorado, which is indeed a different scale than the ones I'm more personally acquainted with, but also I have now seen footage of, for example, the fucking Yellow river:

...and it's absolutely absurd we don't have a specific word for "a river that is Fuck-off Huge" in English! We have a bunch for "a river that's Teeny Tiny" like creek, stream, brook etc... and I'm sure part of it is that rivers like the Yellow river (or Amazon, or Nile, etc etc) aren't present in the lands where English initially developed, obviously, BUT STILL... "river that you would have to be suicidal to try to ford" seems like a useful linguistic shorthand and it's weird that we don't have it. imo.

I grew up on the Columbia River in eastern Washington State and I was aware that small rivers (like the Yakima River, also a major feature of my childhood landscape) existed, I just didn’t consider them real rivers. Anything that you can walk across or lazily float down is more of a, I don’t know, recreational waterway. They’re nice or whatever, but they’re not really real rivers.

Huh. I just did the rough math... Dick is only maybe 25 years old when Infinite Crisis ends... Which aligns with Nightwing 117 or so. So everything that happened up until then, all those questionable medical decisions and I'll sleep when I'm dead moments were early to mid twenties decisions. I did some research.

​The popular idea that your brain "magically finishes developing at 25" is actually a simplified pop-culture myth, but the underlying neuroscience is real: the prefrontal cortex is responsible for impulse control, long-term risk assessment, and executive planning, and it's the last region of the brain to mature structurally through myelination and synaptic pruning.

Myelin is a protective coating wrapping your brain's nerve fibers like insulation on electrical wire. It accelerates neural communication effectively turning the dirt roads of your thoughts into high-speed fiber-optic cable speed thoughts so that your brain can process complex decisions quickly. Synaptic pruning is basically clearing out the clutter. Your brain builds millions of connections in early life but during your teens and twenties it starts trimming away the unused ones while reinforcing the heavily used ones. Basically pruning the synapses. Pruning deletes the fluff and myelination powers up the essentials and together that streamlines the brain from way too many chaotic pathways into efficient specialized mental roadways

Also, during adolescence and your early twenties, your emotional, reward-seeking limbic system is operating at 100% capacity while your brain’s "logical brake pedal" is still actively rewiring itself. This creates a natural developmental gap where your emotional gas pedal is working great, but your ability to foresee long-term physical consequences is still catching up to real-world experience. (You're still actively learning FAFO)

​When you apply this to Dick Grayson, his childhood as Robin creates a neurobiological paradox. Years of elite Bat-training forced the tactical, spatial-reasoning, and combat-planning networks in his prefrontal cortex to fast-track and wire up years ahead of his non-hero peers. But... growing up in a state of constant life-or-death trauma flooded his developing brain with toxic levels of cortisol and adrenaline. This hyper-activated his amygdala (fight-or-flight) and effectively broke his internal self-preservation signals.

So basically part of his prefrontal cortex is accelerated through the roof and part of it is traumatized and slowed in development. Out on the rooftops, his tactical executive function operates like a 35 year old veteran; but alone in his apartment at night at 22, his logic defaults to a traumatized mindset where running on zero sleep and ignoring internal injuries feels totally reasonable. He’s a tactical genius whose upbringing made him brilliant at saving everyone else and completely terrible at taking care of himself.

Basically his split second risk assessment where he can calculate velocity, trajectory, line of sight, and threat levels in milliseconds is through the roof. His motor planning and spatial reasoning neural pathways were insulated with thick layers of myelin very early on. So in a crisis his executive control is decades ahead of his more normal peers. But the cortisol and adrenaline and trauma make the fight or flight hyperactive and if his survival depends on ignoring broken bones, exhaustion, and fear to save others, his brain adapts by down playing his internal body signals (interoception).

Now what this looks like is that the high-speed super prefrontal cortex part of him can calculate 10 step acrobatic escape routes in .2 seconds but the traumatized prefrontal cortex part thinks sleeping 2 hours a night on a bare floor is fine. He can spot an ambush or a trap in a dark alley but he will ignore a high fever or gunshot wound until he passes out.

That prolonged high cortisol level and adrenaline effectively sort of made him think he's invincible. Not really, but sorta. He logically knows none of them are, but again, that part of his brain development isn't tracking like the rest of it, because of cortisol and adrenaline, and there is a blind spot. It's not a moral failing as much as a biological one that he couldn't really avoid. So maybe if he and Bruce figured that out soon enough, they could stop it from happening to the rest of them after him especially to Damian, who is the only one comparable to him as far as being at it from a young age.

The tldr of it is his early training made him a genius at external threat assessment but his childhood trauma completely broke his internal self-preservation assessment. His physical reaction times and tactical instincts matured early but his ability to take care of his own body and admit he needs help was actually delayed by his hero life.

Chimes with a thought I've had for a while, actually; sleep deprivation might mean I explain this badly, but:

What a red flag actually means: something here is an indicator of a potential problem (but might be fine with a reasonable explanation)

What people have now decided it means: abuse

I've lost count of the number of times I've now had to read variants of "My partner takes all my money and gives me back an allowance because he says it's a man's job to control finances, but he's racking up gambling debts" being met with "Wow this man is a walking red flag" no Becky that is abuse. That is not an indicator. He is an abuser. Call the police. We have lost the concept of a proxy: a thing that indicates a more important thing. And it's relevant to this conversation because I'm actually going to go out on a limb here:

With the obvious exception of paedophilia, age gaps themselves aren't a problem at all - they are a proxy for the actual harmful phenomenon. Hea me out, let me explain

The reason we don't like age gaps is because of the implied power dynamic. If one partner, usually male, is older than other - particularly if the other is still quite young - the risk is that what we're seeing is a worldly wise predator who is exploiting the lack of life experience of a young beautiful woman by mentally abusing her until she's no longer young and pretty enough to satisfy, at which point he'll move on to the next. There have been enough examples of this in human history. It's unfortunately not an uncommon pattern. Genders can also be diverse in this scenario

We can't necessarily see that dynamic from the outside. But we CAN see an inherent element of it: the ages of the people involved. So age becomes a proxy for the abuse. And, hey, it's often correct.

But here's the thing: the ages themselves are not causing harm.

The power dynamic is. The abuse is.

Plenty of age gap relationships are loving, healthy and steadfast. Two people met and genuinely fell in love regardless of the outer packaging, and have a relationship with all the highs and lows and challenges and rewards as any more traditional pairing. This happens all the time

Is the age gap a red flag? Sure! It indicates a potential issue.

Is it inherently abusive? Absolutely fucking not.

OP is right - we need to stop focusing just on the numbers and twisting the facts to fit by infantilising the younger partners, and start focusing on the actual harms. The DiCaprio Pattern of only dating under 24s repeatedly is itself a proxy, too, actually - but a much stronger one than the simple presence of an age gap.

(Even so, in DiCaprio's case, until any of his former partners come forward and describe him as abusive, actually, even that is up in the air - my personal interpretation, given how strong a pattern it is, is that he's a loser who views women as trophies (consciously or not). If any have come forward and I don't know about it, of course, fair enough. But those women were adults capable of making their own decisions, even if they might later come to regret it. And regretting poor decisions is part of life! That's how it goes, particularly with relationships. As long as they weren't abused, there's no biggie. And just as he was looking for young-and-beautiful, there's no way they weren't, on some level, looking for rich-and-famous; it goes both ways.)

Also, another element of this: I think a lot of modern extreme puritan discourse on this is actually ironically down to the age of those taking part. Up until your late 20s, ten years is actually a huge span of time to you, because in your own life you were in a completely different developmental phase ten years ago (teenager), and a completely different phase again ten years before that (child). That skews your sense of what a ten-year gap means. Whereas once you're in your 30s and beyond, ten years is like. Yeah I was an adult ten years ago, and I still am now. That's two adults. Who cares.
