I think it's kind of ridiculous how mad you guys get about the part of TLG where Shane kills all those people by crashing into a city bus at 150 miles an hour :/ like it's a narrative choice and characters are supposed to be flawed. He literally gets better too like he decides to stop abusing benadryl and it's not like it was his fault he was hallucinating the hat man (other than that he had taken all those pills). but idk it's kind of the whole point of a character arc
Honestly, at this point I think that people genuinely think Shane is not capable of understanding jokes. Like I am sorry, but if you are using Shane’s autism as “proof” that he doesn’t understand Ilya’s joke about “not liking him as a person” or even Yuna’s “favourite son” joke, then that’s ableism. Shane is not dumb, he clearly likes joking and chirping at his loved ones. Like do y’all really think, Shane took the whole pregnancy thing seriously, when Hayden joked about it in episode 4? Please tell me y’all don’t think Shane didn’t get that joke because of his autism.
God it's so crazy that the narrative that Shane and Ilya hated each other was so universal that literal children understood Ilya's bit here. I bet they sold branded Rozanov vs Hollander rock em sock em robots
In my head Shane is 14 when one of his coaches finds him on the ice doing extra drills after practice and he makes some Crack like, "Guess you're not a once in a generation talent after all." And Shane is surprised and doesn't know what he means, and thinks maybe he did something wrong? A stupid newspaper called him a generational talent a couple months ago and the kids on his team - well it's fine. They're still winning. "More like twice huh?" The coach finishes. He holds up a DVD in an unlabled jewel case (because it's 2005) "Got something you're going to want to see."
The coach takes him to the video room and puts the DVD in, "There's a kid in Russia, same age as you. They're saying he's the next Gordie Howe."
He presses play and they watch a shaky video of two Russian teams. Shane's heart starts racing as he watches. He can immediately tell who coach is talking about. One of them is clearly faster and smarter than the rest, moving through the defense with a slick confidence that Shane immediately finds fascinating.
"His name is uh," coach digs though a pile of paper, "Romanof or something." He finds what he's looking for, "Ilya Rozanov. He'll be draft eligible the same year you will."
Shane feels that same sense of determination, terror, and joy he always feels when one of his coaches talks about him getting drafted like it's a forgone conclusion. He keeps watching the kid on the ice, the same age as him, and very good, and also already set for the draft.
His play style is fascinating, and when his shift is over Shane grabs the remote to fast forward to the next time he gets on the ice, wanting to see more.
His coach laughs and claps him on the shoulder, "Don't worry about him too much. You won't be playing him for a couple of years."
Shane watches this boy skate around his teammates like it's easy, like he's bored, maybe as bored as Shane sometimes is with his own team. He can't wait.
i feel like wanting rr, a white canadian woman, to write about the cultural struggles of existing as a japanese canadian person post wwii in her smutty hockey romance meant to be read on a plane or a beach while on vacation is a little much. like that’s not the kind of books she’s writing and it was never gonna be. but I also realize that the real issue here is that the media doesn’t allow for these stories to be told and constantly prioritizes the experiences of white people so when people see a character like shane, they want him to represent so many different experiences. but the constraints of the genre and intentions of the author are constantly getting in the way of that wish being fulfilled. Idk man I just feel like we’re asking a lot from a smut author
I mean, and I agree with you OP, but I do think that while the media maybe doesn’t prioritize quiet stories about immigrant experiences (although, it doesn’t really prioritize smutty gay hockey romances either) that sort of thing does definitely exist and there are uh, much better places to look for this kind of material?
Just for my personal local resources I had growing up, the SF library celebrates Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage month every year with loads of book and movie recs (and programming if you’re nearby). Many of those books are specifically aimed at exploring the experiences of Asian immigrants. Growing up, we read a lot of this sort of stuff in school (because it was so relevant to the region).
When it comes to Japanese immigrants in specific, they’re a relatively wealthy and well educated group, so their experiences are actually fairly well represented in art. (My own father’s ethnic group is uhhhh not.) It just requires a little bit of searching.
Now I can’t provide specifically Ottawan or Canadian resources or writing from a Canadian Asian author on this (the only one I know off the top of my head is Jan Wong, I think, and most of her writing is about Maoist China).
But my point is that the own voices movement actually did move the needle on publication of these sorts of stories. There’s a lot out there! Maybe not as much as there could be but it’s not a desert. And I for one would recommend reaching for those books if it’s something you’re hungry for, rather than asking the white pornographer for it.

When people point out that all of Shane’s fears come true in TLG, they don’t mention how his fear of losing Ilya also almost comes true. There is a reason why he doesn’t let Ilya drive his sports cars or let him smoke anymore in TLG. Literally one of Shane’s biggest fears is losing Ilya (be it Ilya breaking up with him or Ilya dying). The fact that Shane almost loses Ilya in a fucking plane crash is so important, because it changes Shane’s perspective on their plan entirely and he realises that staying in the closet isn’t sustainable anymore. This is why he immediately proposes to Ilya after.
what if somehow Shane knows of Ilya Rozanov but doesn’t know what he looks like and they still bump into each other at the prospect cup and Ilya is so enamored by Shane’s brown eyes and freckles that hijinks ensue as he goes to great lengths to keep Shane from realizing that he’s got a plan to hook up with his rival
In #myhrtimeline Shane is on Sesame Street to talk about good sportmanship whether it be a win or a loss and then a week later he tries to physically fight Scott on the ice after winning his game against him. Ilya sends him pretty much nonstop memes about this. Most of them are just Elmo wildly swinging his arms around w/ “you” attached.

Did you know that the target audience for Farming Simulator is actual real-world farmers? Because I didn’t. I just assumed that farmers probably don’t want to go home from a day of farming to do some (presumably highly inaccurate) virtual farming?
Like, imagine if the target audience for Power Washing Simulator was actual professional power washers.
Farming Sim gets sponsored by companies and shit to put ads in their games. But since the game is for farmers, all of the ads target farmers. Advertising products that, realistically, only farmers would be interested in. Aka John Deere tractors and shit.

My buddy who is a farmer has the type of planter that drives itself across the field using GPS at a steady speed, and he just needs to turn it around at the end of each row. He added a little folding desk to his chair and plays farming simulator on it while he plants.
