Good Kakashi-Sensei, you look kind of cool!
things abuse survivors think/say
maybe my trauma wasnât bad enough
maybe what happened was just my fault??
but what if I canât hold that person accountable? what if they meant well
what if I donât have the right to be angry?
but what if they didnât know they were hurting me? maybe its my fault for not saying it
itâs my fault, iâve always been hiding how badly things hurt me
iâm just weak and pathetic and everything hurts me itâs not their fault iâm like this
hey this this thing actually happen or did i make that up
if i ask abuser theyâll tell me i made it up that must be true they do say iâm delusional
maybe if Iâve done something differently this wouldnât have happened
guilt guilt guilt guilt
what if abuser is right tho? what if theyâre telling the truth and itâs okay to tell it in insults then?
iâm garbage, i knew it
yeah everyone deserves compassion and comfort but me? no.
I am the sole person who is just bad enough to deserve everything that has happened to me
no this person didnât mean to hurt my feelings iâm just too sensitive!!!
maybe someone else wouldnât be hurt by this, this means its my fault
i hate myself
how long until everyone realizes iâm just a fake and thereâs nothing valuable inside of me
yeah they like me now but iâm going to fuck it up and theyâll hate me like everyone else
was that abuse? no it canât be. its my fault. if I wasnât the way I am it wouldnât have happened
everything people do to me is just what I deserved
what this person is doing bothers me so I have to try harder not to be bothered by it
this person is wrong but everyone believes them so it must be okay
yeah they hate me but i donât want them to leave me maybe i can get them to hate me less
yeah this person is hurting me but i still need them in my life maybe if i change myself
it doesnât matter if they hurt me, iâm used to it
what if everyone abandons me and I die alone
this person scares me but I canât let that affect me
I shouldnât be feeling this way, I need to get over my feelings
I canât let anyone notice how I feel or they will hate me
how does everyone just stay calm? why canât I do that
Iâm a burden on everyone, I bet theyâd all be happier if I wasnât there
if I disappeared right now wouldnât everything be better?
*these are not truths, this is after-effect of long term abuse

Guide: Tagging for Alternate Setting Fics
Tagging your fic with the ambiguous âAlternate Universeâ metatag is Completely unhelpful.
DO NOT:Â tag with âAlternate Universeâ and âCoffee Shopâ
DO: tag with the full, disambiguated forms of both âAlternate Universe - Modern Settingâ and âAlternate Universe - Coffee Shopâ (or whichever synonyms you prefer)
DO NOT: tag a canon divergence with âAlternate Universeâ
DO: tag a canon divergence with âCanon Divergenceâ or âAlternate Universe - Canon Divergenceâ followed by any other applicable tags such as âFix-itâ or âSomebody Lives/Not Everyone Diesâ (or, again, whichever synonyms you prefer)
I cannot stress this enough â the coffee shop tag is under the âAlternate Universe - Careerâ tag tree, which is separate from the âAlternate Universe - Schoolâ tag tree â and both those trees are separate from âAlternate Universe - Modern Settingâ. You want your fic visible or filterable on each applicable search.
WHEN TAGGING for a non-canon setting, familarize yourself with the page for the Alternate Universe tag tree found [here].
Then, follow this flowchart:Â
1. Is it a non-canon setting because the powers are different? If so, tag for the power differences as appropriate.Â
If adding supernatural elements, âAlternate Universe - Supernatural Elementsâ or one of its synonyms or subtags is appropriate. See also the âAlternate Universe - Fantasyâ subtags such as âAlternate Universe - Witchcraftâ or âAlternate Universe - Faeâ.Â
If removing supernatural elements, âAlternate Universe - Real Worldâ or one of its synonyms or subtags. See especially âAlternate Universe - No Powersâ.
2. Is your story set in a different time period than canon? If so, tag the time period at this time. Here are some of the options, with their many, many subtags.
Modern Setting
Note that the Modern: No Powers and Modern: Still Have Powers tags are sorted under both the modern setting subtree and the No Powers and Still Have Powers subtrees respectively. You may find this useful.
Historical
If you tag with both the metatag âAlternate Universe - Historicalâ and the more specific subtag that applies to your work, this is fine. However, so long as youâve tagged with one of its subtags, anyone searching the metatag should be able to find it.
Fairy Tale
Most of these subtags are best suited for indicating Fairy Tale fusions, mind. See also the point above.
Fantasy (again)
Might be more appropriate for general fantasy settings if youâre not planning on a fusion with a specific fairy tale.
3. Is your story written in a setting based on a fannish tradition? Now is the time to pick a tag for that. Search for it on the Alternate Universe tag tree page. Find below some examples.
Alternate Universe - Spies & Secret Agents
Alternate Universe - Science Fiction (and subtags such as cyberpunk and space opera)
Alternate Universe - Criminals
Alternate Universe - Noir
Alternate Universe - Horror (zombies are a subtag here)
Alternate Universe - Dystopia
seriously, just do a search on the page, a tag for it exists
4. Now, if itâs in a school setting, tag the appropriate school setting.
Alternate Universe - School contains most of them,Â
but Alternate Universe - Art School is separately sorted with Artists,
and for whatever reason, College/University isnât in the Alternate Universe tag tree at all. Youâll have to tag it separately. For this reason, if youâre tagging for College/University, you may want to double-tag it with Alternate Universe - School.
5. If itâs a career setting (aka the fic centers on the career), tag that at this time. There may be some crossover with this step and step 3.
Most career tags are subtags of Alternate Universe - Career, but not all of them.Â
If you donât find the one youâre looking for, do a search on the main Alternate Universe tag tree page. Itâs probably in there somewhere. In this case, tag âAlternate Universe - Careerâ in addition to the unaffiliated specific tag.
6. If itâs a fusion with a specific fandom, those are there too.Â
Again, most are subtags of Alternate Universe - Fusion. If you donât find them on that subtree, still try searching the fandom. HOWEVER,Â
You may prefer to tag it with something from the Crossovers & Fandom Fusions tag tree.
7. Sit back. Ask yourself if the tags both clearly communicate whatâs in the fic so that people who read the tags can tell whether there are elements theyâre especially interested in or would rather avoid, and are filterable, so that, for example someone looking for a Gangster AU finds your Gangster AU. That wonât happen if you only tagged it with âModernâ and didnât add âAlternate Universe - Gangstersâ or âAlternate Universe - Mobâ or âAlternate Universe - Criminalsâ.Â
Feel free to reblog or comment with points I may have missed.Â
Please do get familiar with exploring tag tree pages and using the Tag Search tool to find tags for fics youâre writing or want to read! Theyâre good systems, but only as good as their implementation! No amount of beautifully-synned tags will help if you donât apply any of those tags to your fic.
Also. If your work is modern setting or no powers and that isnât indicated in the tags or summary, youâre gonna get a lot of people who opened it, realized it wasnât what they were looking for, and closed it again in irritation.Â
Whereas if itâs properly tagged those same people will happily read it when theyâre in the mood.
i might elaborate later but fanfic replies literally develop writerâs metacognition and make them better writers
so, Metacognition is the practice of thinking about thinking or identifying oneâs cognitive process . in essence, metacognition is understanding how you prepare for academic challenges, exams, or tasks, and then being able to reflect on whether you did well, you prepared adequately, and what was most effective. in a writing setting, this type of self-awareness helps you transfer skills in writing, say, fanfiction into writing academically, competitively and professionally.Â
hereâs an article from brown university on the subject iâll discuss further. there are 3 parts of practicing metacognition identified in this article: planning, monitoring, and evaluation. how might this look like for a fanfic writer?Â
planning: asking oneself âwhat is my goal?â âwhat strategies should i use to meet that goal?â âhow much time/length do i need to meet my goal?â. so maybe my goal is to write a meet cute where two characters kiss. iâll need to use a perspective, an upbeat tone, and forward characterization to do this. itâll probably take 5000 words and two days to write.Â
monitoring: asking oneself: is my story making sense? am i reaching my goal, or do i need to summarize more succinctly to keep it to 5k? maybe you started with a lot of exposition and now youâre 6k in and the characters havenât met yet. what went wrong/changed? is it ok that it changed or did you not realize it got away from you? what now?Â
evaluation: asking oneself: did i reach my goal? was it effective? what would i change next time?Â
this is where comments come in
it is incredibly difficult to evaluate yourself. comments like âi love this!â actually do begin to touch on the evaluation step of metacognition. it means, in general, the writer is on the right track. comments like âi loved the dialogue between x and yâ or âthe emotions of this section really hit meâ begin to answer the questions of was it effective, did i reach my goal and conversely answer what would i change next time (by adding more of whatever was specified as working well). HYPER SPECIFIC comments, like analyzing the story between the lines or pasting in a line that you really liked and explaining why, is like jet fuel for the metacognition process and iâm not exaggerating. specifically pointing out what was effective and why is incredibly usefulÂ
i can straight up credit my writing style to all of my friends and readers who have given incredibly detailed comments. when i found a community who gave feedback like that, my writing improved a thousand times faster than before. so! i guess what iâm saying is give feedback! it goes so much further than you realize!
Wired: Leave comments because it makes your fav writers feel good
Inspired: Leave comments because it will make them write better
Eureka-d: leave comments because it will make YOU write better too. It develops your meta cognition as well
The fact that people keep telling me, âOh god I needed something this positive right nowâ keeps me writing the happy because I need it too. But the Untamed fandom has some AMAZING readers who go through chapter by chapter and pull out all the bits they like and talk about them and itâs honestly very motivating, mostly because it gets me out of my own imposter syndrome.Â
Plot twist, positive comments were Constructive Criticism the whole goddamn time
Letâs hear it for lurkers
So apparently round umpty-zillion of âpeople are killing fandom by not commentingâ is going around, and Iâve seen a few posts trashing people for lurking/viewing/reading instead of actively participating.
My journal and my fic has always been a lurker-friendly zone. I think lurkers are great and people can fight me on this. Hereâs why:
We all started out as lurkers. Or at least most of us did. Come on. Iâm sure some people out there mustâve jumped into fandom with both feet and started writing and commenting right away, and good for you if you did! But I sure didnât. I lurked for YEARS. And even now, though Iâve been in fandom since before Y2K, whenever I get into a new fandom or a new social media platform, I still lurk. I hang out around the fringes for awhile to get a feeling for the place before starting to participate. Back in the mailing list/bulletin board days, it was usually recommended that people do that on purpose, watch and listen and learn the local lingo and social rules before diving in. So you know what? You are not doing anything wrong and you are not doing anything that most of the people you see out there commenting and creating and reccing things havenât done themselves.
We all have lurker days, weeks, months âŠ. Nobody is 100% âonâ all the time. Participating in fandom (commenting, reccing, creating content, and so forth) is WORK. It may be fun work, but it still takes effort! Even if youâre sometimes very active in fandom, then youâll have life fall on your head or the brain weasels flare up, and you wonât have the time and energy to give. Donât feel guilty about not being able to give fandom your extra spoons. No one in fandom has a right to demand a single spoon from you that you donât want to give.
Some of todayâs lurkers may be your friends tomorrow. How do I know this? Because Iâve made friends with some of them myself! Iâve had people delurk in my comments to say hi after YEARS of reading my fanfic without saying a word. Which I am totally okay with, by the way. And some of these people are good friends today.
So, in conclusion:
It is okay to feel too shy to come out of lurkerhood in fandom until you feel more comfortable there. It is fine, in fact, if you never do.
It is okay to be too busy and have too few spoons to comment or create stuff. You still have a perfect right to be in fandom and read and reblog whatever you want.
It is okay if you meant to comment on that fic or go back and press the kudos button but never got around to it.
It is okay if you have too many accounts already and donât want to create a new one just to comment/participate on a social media platform.Â
It is okay if your personal situation (a stalker ex, controlling parents) makes it unsafe for you to create an account or comment on things.
It is okay if you canât or donât want to comment or do any of the other things that constitute non-lurkerhood, and you donât owe anyone an explanation for why.
IT IS OKAY TO BE A LURKER.
This post is a good way to balance a lot of the âCOMMENT ON FIC COMMENT COMMENT COMMENTâ stuff that I post here. Content creators will always be happy to receive comments, and comments do in fact breed more content but⊠sometimes you canât, and you arenât obligated to. Itâs fine to passively enjoy content for whatever reason.
I was a decades long lurker. You all are welcome here.
Iâm still trying to find my place in the fandom, please lurk, and enjoy and join in as you feel comfortable.Â
Also if you are low energy, please donât make promises you canât or are unable to keep. Iâd rather people just lurk and say nothing at all then promise to review and then donât do anything for months.
It creates a false pretense and obligation that just puts more pressure on you when thatâs not something you need right now, but also can make an author feel jilted when that promise is not followed through.
So be kind to yourself and be kind to your favorite authors. Comment when you can, but donât invent obligations when you donât have to, itâs not healthy.
Lurkers can lurk.
Realizing itâs not romance that I hate but overdone straight relationships with zero chemistry built on a slew of misogynistic tropes was like a huge revelation for me
If youâre characters have literal zero commonality, what the fuck are you even doing here?
Like yeah I know I sometimes jump feet first into smut fics, but if I didnât think those characters had any chemistry to begin with I would not even give it the time of day. (Being Demisexual makes this a requirement so.. makes sense)
Give me common interests and equal footing (with a little goofiness to the side, as a treat) and you are guaranteed to have my attention.
Ronald âPretty oneâ Weasley
I couldnât stop thinking about a conversation I had on discord and so here. Ron Weasley becoming the Pretty Weasley
âAlright, you know what? I will not allow this.â Harry said one night after walking in on Ron trying on the robes his mother sent. The Yule Ball was but two weeks away, with neither of them being able to find dates yet, Ron had hope to try on the robes and see what they look like.
He felt utterly miserable staring at his reflection and Harry wouldnât stand for it. His friend walked over with a set jaw, a firm frown and a stride that promise he would burn the world down if needed to get what he wanted. Ron often wondered how Harry could be so intense all the time, wasnât he ever exhausted? âOff with the robes Ron.â
âI-Iâm sorry?â
âOff with the robes. You arenât wearing those. Burn them if you must.â Harry repeated planting himself before his friend, hands on his hips. Briefly Ron thought of his mother when she was on a rant about the twins. âIâm going to get you something better to wear.â
A rush of shame and outrage sprung through the red headâs body, his face clouding over. He canât figure out what to do with all the emotions, so he lashes out. âI donât need your pity!â
âItâs not pity! Youâre my best friend! I want to helpâ Harry insists and it was only due to the fact he has seen the same expression on the Boy-Who-Livedâs face when he attempted to convince Ron he hadnât put his name in the goblet. Â
The red head pursed his lips but he nodded anyway. He could always find a way to pay his friend back, because he would be paying him back. Ron refused to be anyone charity case. âFine. How exactly are you going to get me new dress robes?â
Harry practically lit up as if he thought of a brilliant idea. âOkay so Iâve been thinking a lot about this. We canât leave the castle but you know who can? Dobby!â
At once the little house elf appeared in the room.  âHarry Potter has called for Dobby?â
âYes, Dobby, you are a free elf yeah? Would you be able to leave Hogwarts and buy something I need?â
âDobby has no master! Dobby can go buy for Harry Potterâ The little elf chirps and Ron is honestly surprised by Harryâs idea because he hadnât even consider the house elf to be able to leave the castle at all. âWhat is Harry Potter needing?â
Harryâs green eyes twist to lock with Ronâs ocean blue, and they crinkle as his friend gestures at him. âDress robes for Ron. Something. Something really nice.â
Dobby freezes then frowns. He gives Ron a calculating look which is something the pureblood never thought he would see on a house elf. He feels himself hunching over, a reaction of anyone staring at him for too long.Â
Dobby snaps his fingers and a measuring tape appearing at his side.  âDobby works in kitchens now, but Dobby would buy Malfoys robes when Dobby was not free. Dobby can find Wheezy robes. Dobby will make sure to find ones that work with Wheezyâs skin tone and eyes. Arms out Wheezy!â
âUmâ Ron says throwing his arms out in a straight line at either of his sides. Harry grins taking a seat on the bed as the measuring tape zip and zaps around him. âThank you Dobby. What do you mean with my skin tone and eyes.â
Dobby wrinkles his nose. âDobby learned all about that while working for Malfoys Dobby did. Wheezy never dresses for the right colors, but Dobby knows which is best. Dark or falls yes, not bright.â
Ron had no idea what that meant but after a few minutes, the house elf proclaim he was finished and would be off to commission a outfit for the Weasley. Harry gave him a few galleons to pay for it, then he carefully folded up the old robes Mrs. Weasley sent Ron, to throw into a box under the red headâs bed, never to see the light of day again.Â
âNow, what to do about your hairâŠ.â Harry starts but Ron raises his hands to his head, backing away from the other male who has picked up a pair of scissors.Â
âOh no! You are not coming anywhere near me with those mate!âÂ
âBut-â
âNo Harryâ
âFineâ The boy huffs. He placed the scissors back on the night table near him and throws himself onto the bed. âI suppose we can find someone else to do it.â
That was easier send then done. Alas over the two weeks where they were waiting for Ronâs pending dress robe order, the two could not find someone who could do a decent cut and someone Ron trusted enough near his hair. They were so distracted with helping Ron for the big day they forgot about finding dates until Hermione reminded them the day off that Harry had to be on time with his date before hand to do the first walz. Â
âoh no, I forgot about the dateâ His best friend whispered in horror as the two boys got ready. Ron himself was also in peril. The dance was to start in two hours and there was no sign of Dobby, his hair was still long and he didnât have a date. Harry at least was wearing the robes his mother bought with his money and while he didnât look like huge celerity of his status at least he had the proper attire.
âWe are both so-wait. We both donât have haveâŠa dateâ Ron starts stating at Harry. The Potter stares back with a blank expression, bless his soul but the boy could be so dense.  âMate we could go together.â
âTogether? Wouldnât that beâŠodd? Professor McGonagall said I needed a date, so people would think you and I are on a date.â Harry says slowly. Heâs body language gives away to his discomfort but Ron knows Harry isnât oppose to going with a bloke, he is just worried about how others will react. He gets like that whenever something from his upbringing comes to mind. The Weasley rolls his eyes. Â
âThose muggles really do have everything backwards donât they? Mate no one will care if you and I are male. Half the school is bent.â
âWhat really? Is this like the twins thing?â
âTwins are not that rare Harry. Almost every family has at least one set of twins in every three generations.â
âThey are rare. In the muggle world at least.â
âGood thing we arenât there then.â Ron then remembers he hasnât gotten robes and wilts, throwing himself on the bed. âThough if Dobby doesnât come back soon I understand not wanting to be seen with me in those dreadful dress robes Mum sent.â
âIâm not embarrassed by you Ron. Never. Your my best friend.â Harry says earnestly and the red head canât help but crack a smile at that. He knows he has insecurities that canât be resolved with simple words but sometimes Harry makes them a little bearable. âIf you want to, please be my date. I rather it be with someone I know anyway.â
âIâŠâ What does one say to that.  âI guess it be coolâ
Ron cringed as the words left his mouth but Harry relaxed. The Potter looked at the time on the clock and shrugged. âMay as well shower Ron. Whatever your wearing wonât matter if you smell like sweat.â
âHey! I do not smell!â The red head shouts offended but the teasing eases something in him and he finds himself gathering what he needs for shower. Harryâs laughter followed him into the bathroom, until later when Ron was stepping under the water, Harry knocked on the door.
âIâm going to meet you there!âÂ
He shouted back a agreement, unable to hear of Harry walked away or not as he shampooed his hair. Half-way into scrubbing his body, a soft pop was heard and Ron screams as Dobby rips away the shower curtains.Â
âDobby brought Wheezy- stop screaming it only Dobby- Dobby brought Wheezyâs robes and Dobby will be helping Wheezy hair.â The little house elf proclaims as the teen desperately tries to cover himself. âOut! Out! Much to do, Wheezy mustnât be late!â
âLet me at least put some pants on!â
The House elf plants the boy into a chair, and snaps his fingers into three rapid sessions, a comb, sessions and a spray bottle flout around the Weasley who eyes the items with true free. âDobby do you know what you are doing?â
âDobby has personally cared for Lucius Malfoyâs hair since he was seven! Dobby knows what to do!âÂ
Thinking of the manâs long fabulous hair âAlrightâŠâ
Later Ron is rushing to get to the meeting point. He barely had time to check his reflection since Dobby insisted on another shower after the haircut, and that he help him into the dress robes. He was also spread with some kind of cologne but when it came to see how he look he was honestly stun.
The fall color- which turn out to mean colors ranging from red to browns in different shades. Ronâs were dark red with dark brown- dress robes Dobby picked out for him fit him to the perfect cut meant to highlight all of his best features. They hugged his upper chest and arms but it wasnât like the hand-me-downs that he got from his siblings who were all broader and shorter then he.
For as long as he could remember Ron had always felt like he was a weed kind of built, tall but scrawny. He never imagine getting clothes that were meant to fit him made him look so different. He seems lean.
His hair was cut shorter now too, not in layers that he had worn since young but more posh and even. Ron never thought he would look good like that but the cut made him look nice, make his eyes pop and his freckles stand out.Â
He liked it.Â
He really did.Â
For the first time, he felt good.Â
Harry was waiting for him at the bottom of the stairs the other champions and their dates already there and Ron was surprise to see Hermione hanging off of Victor Krumâs arm. Merlin but she looked like a goddess.Â
Ron felt himself flattered for only a second because Harry looked up and his already large eyes widen.  âRon! You look amazing!â
The others were also looking stun and with more confidence he made his way to his best friend. Hermione claps her hands  âRon, you look great. Confidence makes you very fetching!â
He felt his face heating up. Harry presses his shoulder to his, short the boy may be but it makes it easier to speak âThanks âMione. You look beautiful.â
Around them more and more people start to hand out compliments and Ron thinks, this, this might be his thing. He could be the pretty Weasley. He could learn how to dress well and maybe he could ask Dobby to teach him. Maybe Ron could even learn how to make his own clothes, or make modifications to the hand me downs so they fit as they should. So he could look lean all the time.Â
He knows it could be shallow butâŠ
but he deserves to feel good, to look in the mirror and like what he sees. At least thatâs what Harry says as they stumble through the first waltz grinning at each other for being goofs and Hermione encourages his idea later while the three get some punch.Â
She claims it doesnât matter what others think because itâs self-care and self-love, something she is always up for. Ron gives her a goofy smile, and then Harry invites him to another dance, while they are dancing- this song a upbeat one and not a formal waltz thank goodness- his best friends stares a little at him before blurting.  âRon, I think I like girls and boys.â
The red head raises a brow,  âyeah? Is it Cedric?â
Harry shakes his head.  âNo. I wonât tell him yet I justâŠwanted you to know. Have I told you how nice you look?â
âAt least a dozen times mate, but thanks.â He laughs as the two spin around avoiding a different pair.  âTell that bloke soon yeah? You deserve someone nice.â
Harry blushes âIâll tell him. Thanks Ron.â
This is absolutely superb! I need more confidence boosting Golden Trio cuz honestly these nerds never got enough of it, well done!

you know what gets me about this scene? Itâs what it says about Azula.
Even when sheâs going nuts, when her mind is slowly unraveling, Azulaâs delusion about her mother does not present her with the image you would expect from a child who thinks their mother thought they were a monster. If Azula truly believed that her mother thought she was a monster, then her hallucination of her should reflect that imagined belief, and present her with a mother who calls her a monster.
But she doesnât see this. Her crumbling sanity doesnât concoct a hateful mother, but a loving and patient one. This presents us with a truly sad possibility : that Azula never really believed that her mother thought her a monster, but that Azula convinced herself of this to justify or make sense of her motherâs seeming preference for Zuko instead of her.Â
And in this moment of terrible fear and vulnerability, when Azula has no one left to bully and banish to justify her fears and behavior, Azula sees the mother she at once resents and longs for. Azulaâs illusions are gone, and all she has left is that sad truth she cannot admit to without crippling cognitive dissonance : her mother loved her. Fear is not the only reliable way to ensure loyalty. Her mother did not fear her. And that she was so very wrong about that is what drives her over the edge.
For all her villainy, Azulaâs story is tragic one, one of a child at the mercy of a father who did not love her but who she depended on for everything and who demanded unspeakable things from her, a child, to keep his non-existent love. Itâs hard sometimes to remember that Azula was only 14 years old in the series, but she was already staging coups and leading people into combat. That is no place for a child, but she was thrust into it anyway.
And it broke her, since she had no true help or support like Zuko did from Uncle Iroh. After her mother left, there was no-one there to balance her worldview, so skewed by her father, into something more moderate, less cutthroat, or kinder. There was only her father, and he was the Firelord : he was the ultimate authority, and no-one could challenge him in any way that mattered, not even Zuko.
Azula was never getting out of this sane or safely, because she was effectively psychologically trapped on a path she could not avoid, and that is nothing more than tragic.

more parents need to understand that teaching children to ask why rules exist is positive and valuable. teaching kids about authorityâand that authority is not always right, and when and how to question itâis a fundamental step to preparing them for adult life.Â
do it right and you wonât get disobedient kids, youâll get kids who think criticallyÂ
Iâve mentioned this before, but my parents introduced a system where if they tell you to do something and thereâs a reason you canât do it, you can ask âMay I appeal,â and theyâll listen to whatever new information you have to present and either revise their command or tell you to do it anyway. This serves a few purposes: first, itâs really funny to hear a four-year-old use legal jargon. Second, having a system in place for protest that isnât whining, complaining, or outright disobedience makes things easier for the parents. Third, it fosters an environment of mutual respect. The child knows that his reasoning is taken into consideration when the parentsâ decision is made, and the parent knows that the child may have legitimate reasons for not obeying a command, while still reserving the right to the final decision.
I do remember telling a teacher that her request was âout of her jurisdictionâ in kindergarten so it can backfire just FYI
1. this first comment opened a whole new world for me, I adore this approach
2. to the second commenter:Â I see ZERO DOWNSIDE to this
Lmao youâre an adult, you shouldnât be using the word squick. Use trigger. Use your grown up adult words to explain how you feel instead of leaning on a cutesy uwu term that no one outside of tumblr uses. Itâs embarrassing.
Idek if this is serious or ironic honestly
#like...why use this baby word when you can just say how you feel about it
Found this in the original post tags and I just... SIGH
Hereâs the thing, anon. Squick isnât just âI donât like thisâ, itâs âI think this is gross and it makes me deeply uncomfortable but I pass no judgement on those who enjoy it, because I acknowledge that everyone is different and those same people may have the same visceral reaction some of the things I enjoyâ and was originally made popular in the kink community.
So yeah, if you want to say that every time you come across a trope or whatever you find icky then go ahead, say that every time.
Also, this term dates back to Usenet in the early nineties, so sure, go off.
This frustrates me so much because squicks and triggers are fundamentally different things and as someone with PTSD, the distinction is super useful!
Squicks are things I find personally gross but may not be gross to someone else. They donât upset me or provoke my PTSD, they simply do not pop my corn. Example: Omegaverse. I donât like it, it makes me uncomfortable and Iâm not going to read it, but if you like it, you do you.
Triggers are things which directly provoke my PTSD. This means that my triggers may seem completely normal and innocuous to someone else, because my triggers are so personal and intrinsically linked to a specific event in my life. My reactions to these triggers can include panic attacks and flashbacks to this traumatic event. Sometimes being triggered can affect me for several hours or even days.
Describing something as either a squick or a trigger allows me easily establish the difference in my potential reaction to something without having to go into painful detail about why bodily fluids might make me back button quickly but poker games might leave me a crying wreck.Â
Making this distinction, and having a specific word for something that is not your slice of pie, but also not an actual psychological trigger, is also REALLY important for making sure that the word âtriggerâ can retain its original, specific, purposeful, and collectively understood clinical meaning (both inside and outside online fannish communities).
If we encourage everyone to lump things that just make them slightly uncomfortable or simply arenât to their taste in under the word âtriggerâ, it actually dilutes the meaning of the word. It makes it harder for us all to, for the most part, collectively agree on and understand what exactly is being described when the word gets used.
And that destruction of shared precise definitions is a problem! It is really useful to have the communal language to be able to clearly and quickly delineate between âthis grosses me out, no thanksâ and âthis is going to set off a trauma episode, rattle my brain, and probably throw off the rest of my day/week as a resultâ while also maintaining your privacy, and to know that you will be understood in what you are saying. Not having it is actually detrimental to the effort of making our communities safe and navigable for people living with trauma. Which is a goal that is much more important to me, personally, than the idea of not being âcutesyâ (a word which in this case which sounds a lot like itâs being used as a euphemism for âcringeâ).
(Also, one has to wonder if people told Shakespeare he was being childish when he made up entirely new words that are still widely used in the English language today...... đ€)
Thereâs a lot in fandom and traditional publishing I describe as squicks; things that I donât care for or find gross. But Iâm also not going to have a visceral physical/emotional reaction if I stumble on those topics by accident, and may even on occasion purposefully consume media containing those topics, because I know what Iâm getting intoâand again, itâs just âI donât prefer thisâ or âI donât like thisâ and can find well-done exceptions now and then, out of creative curiosity (and find they still arenât my cuppa, but hey).
I am lucky in that I really donât have much, if anything, that does prompt a physical/emotional reaction like an actual trigger would. So itâs not appropriate for me to use that term when discussing things to avoid for myself. However, if I know something is someone elseâs squick or trigger, I can better warn them for it.
Anon is the one who needs to grow up if they assign age use to a collection of consonant and vowel sounds with a specific meaning that is very separate from the other word, that fandom has been using for 25-30ish years so far as I recall.
Yet another instance of an anon showing their ass in an attempt to school a fandom old on their language use.
âno one outside tumblr usesâ man shut the fuck up you even called it a âuwuâ word and guess what we were using âsquickâ back in the late 90s on the furry IRC servers I was in
